Target will have more than enough! And also the UCLA store will be stacked with everything you need as well. We got all sorts of things (including pillow and bathroom rolling storage….) that we forgot to pack.
If your kid enjoys shopping, he might have fun just shopping on his own, but yes, you can also buy online.
You mean the UCLA store itself (not Target) has all the dorm essentials too? Thank you.
Yes. UCLA campus store brings in all dorm essentials. They will be well stocked. They don’t carry them during the year, but they have everything at the move in time.
hello, i was admitted off the waitlist last week and filled out the housing app yesterday. Since I submitted it past the deadline, how long will it take for me to get my room assignment?
Sorry replying to an old post but it was very useful. DS got off of waitlist for physics (L&S). What about AP physics C- E/M (student getting 4 or 5)? Any course that UCLA credits? The other school he committed to like at UCLA grants 2 Math courses, 2 Chemistry courses with 5 score) and 2 physics 4-credit courses with AP score of 4 or 5). Thank you in advance for sharing
For a physics major AP Chem score won’t satisfy chem requirement. He will have to take one semester of chem and it will be more like physical chem and not anything like AP chem.
I don’t know about AP Physics C exams but I wouldn’t be optimistic.
You will often just get general credit that’s not very helpful.
Here is a chart:
AP Chemistry with a score of 4 or 5 is either automatically applied or can be petitioned for credit for Chem 20A (General Chemistry 1). AP Physics C E&M gives no credit because it doesn’t exactly correspond with UCLA’s physics courses – the courses cover much more content and cover it out of order. AP Physics Mechanics gives 5 credits for Physics 1A.
Thanks for the pointer.
Thanks much for info on chem and physics E/M. Based on earlier info and UCLA website for AP, seems like AP calculus BC with 5 does get the credit for math 31A and 31B. Advisor can guide whether the credits are automatically done (for all APs taken) or student need to request through petition?
Calculus is automatic.
If you look at the chart, if they list equivalent class next to AP exam, they will place you out automatically.
My kid has a 5 on AP Chem and had to retake Chem 20A as a physics major. He spoke with the department.
Thanks for the input @Medea1. My son is also admitted as physics major and seems like there will be lesser credits given. this was very useful info. BTW is your kid in 2nd year now?
Yes, second year.
Within a week of applying for housing… S25 got informed along with the regular applicants, whose housing application deadline was May 2. He got off the waitlist on May 6, applied for housing around May 8/9.. got informed within a week.
Hello Medea1, is your S25 also planning to change major? My son requested a change when he filled out the orientation sign up form.
From your experience with your older son, do they need to fill out a course planner etc?
Thanks
My older son went into orientation having done absolutely nothing on the course planner. We had no idea it was even there. We just printed all his AP scores and DE coursework (which actually wasn’t needed because they processed all of it prior to his arrival). He did everything while at the orientation. His biggest issue was that he wanted to retake honors physics sequence and they wouldn’t let him since he has taken Calc based physics at a CC (even though they were pandemic crappy classes). So they pushed him into upper division physics. It worked out just fine.
While at the orientation they did offer him the change of major into math. He didn’t.
My younger boy asked to changes stats/data science to Math/econ. He is still not sure about this.
This was my S25s experience at orientation too. He didn’t switch but others in his group who wanted to switch majors within College of L&S just told the orientation advisor and a button was clicked. No need to do course planner etc.
I noticed you said CC was a weakness in hindsight. May I inquire what you meant by that? Did you mean you would have liked to have taken more or less CC and why? Much thanks!
Hi Sure,
I meant, if S25 had taken some CC classes, that probably would have helped him more. UCLA, especially seems to like it. Anecdotally, quite a few of the UCLA admits on this thread, seem to have CC credits.
