Deluxe is slightly larger and has AC.
No. You really are switching as a pre-Bus Econ as there are prerequisites and you have to achieve a minimum GPA of I think 3.3 in certain core classes. That’s true for everyone including those admitted into that major. Econ by itself doesn’t have that requirement - I don’t think.
Deluxe dorms are newer and have AC. They often have their own bathrooms. Sounds great but most of the students I’ve met actually liked classics in hindsight better. Kids are friendlier in classics in part because they have to leave their room to go to the bathroom. My son was in a deluxe freshman year and now all of his friends are from the classic dorms where he hung out more. Your mileage will vary but if your child is rushing Greek life or can find their groups rather easily than the deluxes may be preferable.
Not at all (assuming you’re talking about an entering frosh). Every incoming student faces the same path since they don’t admit students directly into Econ majors. Kids that checked the box for one of these 2 majors are actually listed as being in the pre-major which means exactly nothing; anyone at UCLA can sign up and take the required classes to apply for admittance to the full major.
When you go to orientation you’ll probably be able to switch into the pre-major if you want, otherwise you can do it sometime during the academic year. But it’s really irrelevant; when you apply for full major (different application) they’ll look to see if you’ve taken the required classes to apply and if you meet the 2.5gpa and repeat rules. Yes, if they know their roommates, list their names on the housing application form. I remember you can include the roommate’s UCLA ID# something like that. Then for sure you can get your selected roommate. If you don’t have a specific roommate, you can put your lifestyle preference on the application form. School will try to match it.
I have a question about summer orientation for parents. Parents can also attend the 1st day separately. But do parents also need to register for this? If so, how and what is the cost? Thank you.
Parents do need to register and pay for that session separately. Registration and cost information is available on the newstudents website. Registration opens on May 15th
Attended the May 10 Bruins Day at UCLA. Although, primarily for transfer students, they had an info session for freshmen. We toured the campus under a 98 degree sweltering sun and still loved it. Interestingly they also had a cookout with free food (you needed to do a tour of a building to get tickets).
Thank you. Do you know if signing up at the precise time the registration opens (at 11am PST) will be very crowded? If we sign up an hour or two after, do you think it’s still ok?
I do not know. DS signed up a couple days later last year and still had a few August dates to choose from . But I do not recall how fast the later sessions set aside for OOS/international students fill up.

Housing assignments are out
My D25 got assigned a Plaza triple even though she wanted a classic or deluxe. I heard freshmen usually get assigned a classic so was surprised. Anyone else get put in Plaza?
Do you know what building? Plaza triples are very common for freshman to get in the following buildings:
- De Neve Acacia, Birch, Cedar, Dogwood, Fir, Evergreen
- Hedrick Summit
- Delta Terrace
Last year when I was a sophomore, I was in a plaza triple in De Neve Cedar. I would say that ~40% of my floor was freshmen.
She was placed in Rieber Terrace. Is that not very common for freshman?
Interesting… I’m going to be honest and say that Rieber Terrace is relatively rare. Of course, there will be freshmen in every single building. Rieber Terrace is regarded as one of the “best” dorms on the hill due to its location, but expect plenty of sophomore and junior floormates.
My D lived in Reiber Terrace as a sophomore—in a shared bath plaza suite. Lots to love about the space—AC, bigger than classics, private bath with weekly cleaning. Good location, with Rende right on the ground floor. But definitely less social than her Hedrick Hall classic triple freshman year. It may have been her—she was living with her best friends already and didn’t seek out the lounges like she did freshman year. But UCLA is a social, outgoing place, lots of ways to meet people.
Kid looking for roomswap. Male.
Or any forums for roomswaps you guys recommend? Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Where do OOS students buy their comforters or dorm essentials? Does Target Westwood have options that they can just buy and pick up? Where can we find the bed size at the dorms, etc? Thanks.
Dorm beds all have Twin XL mattresses at UCLA. Based on your previous posts, is your int’l student moving in early or staying in town after orientation? The Target in westwood is usually great and will have options but can get very busy and low on stock the weekend that everyone else moves in.
Yes, international here. I think we will buy online and ship it to a friend’s place near UCLA. You are right. The stores must get really busy during the days leading up to the last NSO. Thank you.
