UCLA Class of 2029 Official Thread

Most freshmen will be in classic triples—Hedrick is where my D22 lived. She loved it. I would recommend the classics over the plazas for freshmen—my D lived in a plaza suite sophomore year and it was much less communal and social. The classic triples encourage a lot of hanging out in the lounge. My D made her best friends on her floor and she’s still friends with plenty of floormates from 2 years ago.

Parents complaint about this on all college FB groups. You should hear the USC parents. I see in-state parents complaining just as much as the OOS parents.

If someone is looking for a small LAC in a rural community, UCLA is not the school for them.

Fair enough. I only have experience with one FB Parent group, which is UCLA’s. My observation for 3 years has been that OOS parents have less tolerance for the annoyances and bureaucracy. Which makes me think that the OOS poster might want to consider whether they will weather the ups and downs of a huge public institution without feeling resentful of the price tag when things don’t go as planned. It’s a personal decision, but I think it’s worth thinking about. (I will be doing it with S26, who very much hopes to go OOS)

Freshman spring/summer and definitely sophmore. I’m across the country so I don’t think I’d be able to bring a car out ever.

For OOS or international, is it a good idea to move in early, right after the last orientation? I suppose there is a cost involved. Has anyone done this? Will the arrangment be announced on May 15 when we sign up for which orientation to attend? My original plan after the last orientation is to leave UCLA campus and come back on the move-in date. Is there a choice of which day we move in or we will be assigned which day to do so? Thanks.

I strongly second selecting a classic triple. It’s not as new or nice as some of the other options but it’s much better for socializing as a result.

My S23 lived in a newer triple with a private bath and his floor wasn’t nearly as social and both of his roomies rushed frats - he didn’t and had a harder time making friends. That’s the consensus we got from other similar newer dorms. This year, he’s living on a floor with friends he met who lived in classic triples as freshman and it’s much more social for him.

If your child is a social butterfly who can easily make friends or they plan on rushing Greek life than the advantage of the classic triple for socialization won’t matter as much. But for most college freshman, it should help them acclimate.

S25 just got off the waitlist instate for Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics. He had already committed to UCB. Now, another dilemma awaits him. Can’t complain. Spoiled for choices we are; and UCLA was his dream school alongwith USC (S22).

Son just got off the waitlist!! In state, Linguistics & CS. He will most likely commit as UCLA has been his dream school all along.

S25 got into UCLA, UCB, USC, but was waitlisted at UCSD

I am sure lots of other examples like that. At our school UCSD admissions tracks UCLA. This could also be due to type of kids who apply to UCSD from our school. It’s not a popular campus for locals. UCSB on the other hand is much more widely applied. Berkeley always has a surprise or two.
Davis and UCSC often waitlist stronger students (other than engineering).
This is our local context and shouldn’t be generalized.

same!

Also, for UCSD, my son applied for an off-track first choice major- Clinical Psych, when his summer research etc. was in Microbiology. May have been yield protection or to see whether he opted onto the waitlist (which he didn’t).

Question for the UCLA forum gurus:
Is it difficult to switch to Business Econ or Econ from Micro-bio, at UCLA? Both majors are in L& S. Thanks…

D25 just found out she got off the waitlist at UCLA - the dream! She had gotten into UC Davis, but said it was too far north (we are in L.A.), despite all the great things we heard about Davis.

I’m so happy for her. She worked SO hard in HS, and was afraid her math class last year (not great) would have doomed her, despite all her other HS grades being A’s.

Hi, any suggestions on dorms at UCLA.. for freshmen
Thanks

Usually they will be assigned the classic triple with no AC (even they signed up other types of housing as first priority), which is more socialized for freshman.

Can they select their roommates? How is roommate assignment done?

What is the difference between classic and deluxe?
