UCLA Engineering Q&A

You can smack Fisico Moldau, I’m innocent.

I’ve heard some pretty funny gossip/truth/lies about ChemE (like who’s parent is on the executive board of some company, gave them an internship / which ChemE guy takes steroids / how somebody got sent to Dean twice for same offense / and much more)

TB54

I’ve also heard some crazy stuff about the ASCE board members since I’m friends with a few ASCE members.

Why does the Chemical Engineering major have five different breadth options? Is it that important for Chemical Engineers to specialize in, say, Semiconductor Manfacturing before even setting foot in industry?

They are not breadths per say (since don’t need to take 3 in different field), just options the individual can take.

The reason why chemical engineering has different options is because we draw from a lot of different fields and we’re like pocket knives, versatile in any field.

The idea behind chemical engineering is really you have some resources, turn it into a high-quality product as fast as possible and get the maximum amount. Every time you’re not making the product, you’re in downtime and wasting away potential profit.

Biomolecular/Biomedical - Make some pharmaceutical product
Environmental - Clean your water/air
Semiconductor - Make as many silicon wafers as you can
No-option - Make some product (ie soap, alcohol or acid)

08 Breakdown (~60% Biomolecular/Biomedical, ~30 No Option, ~5% Semiconductor, ~5% Environmental)
A lot of people take biomolecular/biomedical cause they don’t want to deal with Drake again. Heard 09 hated Drake a lot since he was much harsher and made your life a living hell.

Do options help? Yes and no. The main thing in getting a job is having a passion for what you do. Much like Marc Tremblay from Sun systems, you must love what you do.

[Systems Career Check - Departments - UCLA Magazine Online](http://www.magazine.ucla.edu/depts/trajectory/marc-tremblay_challenges-for-grads/)

Here are the list of employers that comes to mind for the 08 year and which option they hired (this is a fairly accurate list)

BP (Biomedical)
Chevron (Semiconductor)
Baxter (Biomedical/Biomolecular)
Tesoro (Biomedical)
ENSR (Environmental)
Gatorade (Biomedical)
PepsiCo (Biomolecular)
Cisco (Biomolecular)
California Department of Water Resources (Biomolecular)
Annheuser-Busch (No-option)
Pacific Gas and Electric (No-option)

Amgen did not accept any chemical engineers this year, they are taking.
Genentech may give an 08 job offer depending on this person’s response to Baxter.

As you can see, your option does not affect your job. I think some of the 08 ChemEs are not doing ChemE related, rather they are headed to teaching (Teach for America) or doing something else.

[Plus, the stuff he teaches is pretty useless, if you ask me.](xkcd: The Drake Equation)

Maybe it’s the Asian girl with the big booty and nice boobs?

Sorry to correct myself

“for the 08 year and which option they hired (this is a fairly accurate list)”
it should be
“the option of the person they hired”

“Amgen did not accept any chemical engineers this year, they are taking.”
it should be
“Amgen did not accept any chemical engineers this year, they are tanking.”

As for sluts and hotties:

I heard the hottest ChemE was a lolcat.

http://icanhascheezburger.files.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/2007/09/the-iraq-2.jpg

Heard it was that lolcat.

^ hah that is priceless!

Hah you are worthless!

haha i hate you!

My quarrel is not with you, but with your mistress.

I have got into UCLA mechanical engineering. How is this rated amongst other engineering programmes in UCLA??

Compared to GIT or UIUC (both of which I have been accepted to), is UCLA’s engineering programme stronger??
(I know USNews Rank is not everything, but there is a significant difference in rank between UCLA and these two other colleges)

If I am not satisfied with my major, how hard is it to switch to other engineering major??

Is it hard to graduate in 4 years? as an engineering major?

UIUC is easier to get good grades (From what I have heard). When I apply for jobs, do the officers know that it is very difficult to gain good grades in UCLA?? Or will an all A student from UIUC be a better job applicant than all B UCLA graduate?

PLEASE HELP ME REGARDING THESE QUESTIONS, I AM HAVING A HARD TIME DECIDING WHICH COLLEGE TO GO TO

Thanks,

How tough will it be to change major from chemical engineering to electrical engineering in first quarter of my freshman year? Will I be able to do it at the freshman orientation during the summer?

Did you guys even bother to use the search function?! I swear, the “how hard is it to change majors between X engineering major to Y engineering major?” question has been answered already! Shees.

it’s not bad, but it’s not the best.

even though you might be one, Georgia Tech is not abbreviated GIT. it’s GT, GaTech, or Georgia Tech. now that that’s out of the way, i don’t think there’s a difference except for environment and opportunities (internships, co-ops, etc). i dunno what’s around UIUC, but i imagine there’re lots of opportunities at large cities like Atlanta and LA. academically speaking i have no reason to believe the schools are any different.

search.

depends. taking some summer classes makes it easier, as it allows you more leeway in picking classes that aren’t offered every quarter.

i doubt UIUC grading for engineering will be any easier or harder than any other public school. except Cal.

I’m assuming those are graduate program rankings?

anybody know when ucla will release decisions from the engineering department for transfer students?

decisions come out later this month, usually before Berkeley’s
