UCLA Engineering Q&A

105A usually fills up quickly every quarter, but not extremely quickly. I would select that course first, since Physics 1C usually accepts more students and usually is generous in accepting people from the waiting list.

I currently have a macbook and I’m wondering if I should install windows. I know that I can do the programing in the computer labs, but is there a time when I need my laptop to do some programing work? Thanks for the help

Yea, do 105A first, but I really haven’t seen anyone turned down from adding in the MAE dept yet. Unless it’s a lab course, then it shouldn’t matter.

That’s up to you whether you want to work at home or on campus. You can log on remotely to the schools seaslab server on your laptop to access most of the schools programs.

But having windows doesn’t hurt either. I run linux and have to switch back to windows from time to time.

flopsy, ee1 and physics 4bl and cs 35l are all filling up quickly, should i use my first pass for a wait list spot? or should i use it on my remaining math class to guarantee a spot in that do you think?

also, for the wait list, does it automatically put you in the class once someone leaves? or how does that work

thanks

sorry for the double post,

but flopsy for the cs 35l class listings, it shows two sections that are filled 0 out of 0 and are closed, does this indicate that they will be opening them up after the first two are filled?

link to the class listing is here:
[Schedule of Classes: Class Listing](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect.aspx?termsel=08F&subareasel=COM+SCI&idxcrs=0035L+++)

I just enrolled in math 61 and URSA told me that I did not fulfill one of the requisites (PIC 10A). Since PIC 10A is pretty much an easier version of CS31, shouldn’t CS31 already fulfill the requisite for math 61?

You need to call somebody in the department to request that they clear the pre-requisite. At least, that’s the logical thing to do since the computer system isn’t always the most intuitive thing.

Bleh. Registration issues.

I wanted to take: Math 33B, Physics 1C, Physics 4AL (re-taking), Physics 4BL
But both labs were full. MAE 94 was n.a.

Ended up using first pass for: Math 33B, MAE 101

So many questions…
MAE 101 will be my first in engineering dept. Is any previous knowledge beyond Math 33A and Physics 1B expected?
Are 101, 103, 104, 105A all stand alone classes for early in the major?

Think I"ll get Physics 1C in second pass?
Is there another MAE good for early in the major I should try for?

alright i still have my question about cs 35l since it looks like they might open up two more lectures for it, but physics 4bl and ee1 are both still full.

flopsy, do you think its doable to take math 61 the same time as math 33b?

I’m thinking I will have to do that and maybe throw in a GE, so my schedule will look like this:

math 33b
math 61
cs 35l (hopefully they open one of the other two sections)
GE

there’s absolutely no conflict in taking math61 and math33b at the same time (in terms of the material you learn). physics4bl isn’t going to open up unless someone drops it first week(s). you alwayas want to sign up for labs first so cs35l would fit in that category.

For MAE 101, knowledge and fundamental backgrounds of Math 33A and Physics 1A are useful. Physics 1B is basic electrostatics and electromagnetics, which is unrelated to mechanics and statics.

I don’t know what you mean by stand alone classes. The courses you listed are usually taken in the 2nd year for MAE students. The only requisites you have to pay attention to is 101 is the requisite for 102. If your question meant if they are the most basic upper division courses (requiring no other MAE upper division as a requisite, then the answer is yes).

You should be able to get Physics 1C during your second pass, but no guarantees that you will enroll in your preferred discussion session (though that doesn’t matter).

MSE 104, MAE 103, or MAE 105A are good beginning courses to take in your position. Don’t worry if you can’t get into them, or will delay them for another quarter. You’re not behind.

quick question,

what does it mean when a discussion section is TBA, to be announced, but they still let you sign up for it? Do they like poll the class to see when it should be or something?

sorry for the double post yet again lol, disregard that last post

FlameAlex, did you ever fix that problem with math 61? did you just have to call up hsseas?

Actually, I decided not to take math 61 this fall because the final for it would fall on the same day as my other math class’s final. So for your question, I don’t know.

hey flopsy, i’m wondering if you’ve had any experience taking a class with the lecturer listed as TA instead of a named professor. cause right now i have a class conflict and either need to move my math 33 class to 9 am with a professor or move it to 1 pm with just TA, if i had it as just TA my first class MWF would be at 12 then lol

so ya just wondering about having TA as the listed teacher

so Chem Eng 100 is closed. how likely is it that i can get a PTE number??

i have a question about switching to the HSSEAS. i was admitted in letters and sciences, and am starting as a freshman this fall, and i intend on switching to the engineering school asap. on the HSSEAS website, it says the following

“During your first year, you may apply after you have at minimum completed one required Mathematics course and one other required Chemistry, Physics or Life Science course (2 total) at UCLA with grades of, generally, B or better.”

however, i have heard that there is still a way for me to apply for a switch before i complete the first quarter, using my high school stats. is this true?

thanks!

nevermind about my question. prof said i’ll get in

does apply to the school of engineering significantly hurt chances of admission? if turned down, are you considered for the college of letters and sciences?

is it possible to transfer to being an engineering major later on if admitted to the college of letters and sciences?

basically, i’m considering majors such as math, computational math, and computer science or computer engineering.
am i correct that it would be easier to get in if i went for something like math?

Yeah, I THINK it’s harder to be admitted straight into the school of engineering, since you have to be reviewed (the famous engineering likely letter) by their own department.
Correct me if I’m wrong.
