A lot of people like amar because he explains things very well. I agree with them, but his lectures can be really boring. Also he can make some pretty tricky problems on exams. I can’t comment on which is easier, but the material will most likely be presented in a different way in terms of examples.

Hey you guys,

In case you haven’t heard about it, SWE’s selling registration in front of the ESUC Lounge (5800 Boelter) for $10 this week (goes up $5 every week) for EWI. I highly encourage you guys to come to the table, take a look if you don’t know much about it, and sign-up! I’ve gone for the past 2 years (and received an internship offer as a result my 2nd year) and know plenty of people who attend every year because they’ve been successful at getting something out of it.

What is EWI?
Evening With Industry is an annual corporate networking event that allows students the unique opportunity to network with industry representatives and recruiters from a wide range of leading technical companies over a three-course dinner and career fair.

Evening With Industry has become the largest student-organized event of the engineering school, bringing together students from diverse science and technical majors and more than 30 companies last year.

Program includes: Formal Dinner, Guest Speaker, Raffle Prizes, and a Career Fair.

Who should Attend?
Evening with Industry is open to ALL engineering, math, and physics undergrad to grad level students.

Check out the facebook event page for more detailed information AND the up-to-date list of company attendees (company registration deadline hasn’t passed yet so more are being added to the list in the coming days).

[EWI | Facebook](Redirecting...)

And if you have any questions feel free to post here or email: ucla.ewi@gmail.com

Again I highly encourage you to sign-up early to sit with the company of your choice (you write down your top 3 choices). We’re already up to 130 registered students!

Anyone know how the lab for CS 111 works? Do they just go over the lab with everyone and discuss it? Since we don’t work on it in class at all since its in the lecture room…

nvm just got done with it. its labelled as a “lab” but it is just regular discussion lol

more like the TAs just reading the specs to us

yea lol, are you in the class right now?

haha yeah, i guess we’re in the same class :O

Has anyone who attended EWI in past years found it useful in terms of networking? Also, what time does it start (actual dinner).

fatedreality, I am assuming you are a SWE member. Can you provide a general outline of the night, since I might be late due to class? :)

Sure no problem:

The actual dinner is set to begin at 6:45pm. Last year unfortunately I think they ran a little overtime and started the welcome at 6:45pm but this year we will make every effort to stick to the schedule.

Program Schedule
Registration & Hors d’oeuvres: 5:30-6:30pm
Welcome: 6:30-6:45pm
Dinner: 6:45-7:45pm
Keynote Speaker: 7:45-8:15pm
Raffle: 8:15-8:30pm
Career Fair: 8:30-10:00pm

Anyone have any suggestions on tutorials on how to install Linux on your computer without overwriting Windows or the Recovery Partition? It’s getting kind of a pain to always use the Live CD when I’m not at school and pretty soon I’m going to have to start installing stuff and saving more files so I’m thinking I need to do an install instead of just the cd or working in the Linux lab.

Or do any of you use virtual pc’s for linux and think that would be a good solution?

EDIT: I think I’m going to just us a virtual pc, anyone have experience with this and think its an ok solution?

I went to EWI last year. The dinner was slightly disappointing because my table consisted of a rep from Microsoft, a student who talked on her cell phone all meal and a faculty advisor. However, I spent the entire meal talking to the rep which led to an interview both last year and this year.

The raffle was exciting although I wish I had won something. There were definitely some excellent prizes.

The best part, in my opinion, was the career fair. That is where I met and talked to a rep from the company who later offered me an internship which I accepted and had a wonderful experience… They recently offered me a full time position for when I graduate so I’m all set for a job now. I might have talked to them at other career fairs but since I met them at EWI, I definitely think it’s a worthwhile opportunity. Aside from all of that, just talking to companies is always a great way to network.

Using a virtual machine works just fine. Alternatively, you can install Ubuntu (if you would like to use Ubuntu as your distribution) “within Windows,” which basically allows you to have something like a dual-boot setup, but the hard drive is virtualized within Windows. The end result is that Ubuntu works like any other Windows program; you can install/uninstall whenever you want without having to partition your hard drive.

great experiences with EWI. i attended the past 2 years and obtained an internship with Microsoft during freshman summer (i saw with microsoft at EWI). also, the microsoft rep was soo amazing (Celeste) and she even sent me a free fingerprint reader in the mail since she promised all of us at the table she would give us one.

edit: argh sorry, double post

How embarrassed will I be at EWI if I don’t have business casual clothing?

I’m trying to decide what firm I really want to be with for the dinner. Hrmmm…consulting or… biotech

You’re not going to feel very happy with yourself I’m afraid. Maybe borrow from someone or take the opportunity to get yourself some business casual clothes so you’ll be prepared for future career fair events!

I’m afraid we don’t have any consulting companies showing up yet Hitachi bailed at the last minute but there’s still a good chance Deloitte might be coming. I’ll know by this coming Tuesday and post the update.

FYI:

Beginning tomorrow (01/12) we’re wait-listing everyone who signs up for Evening with Industry. Please don’t be discouraged but come to the table if you haven’t signed up since we’ll still ask for all your information and contact you if there are more spots. We’re enforcing a one-day payment policy so anyone who doesn’t pay their registration fee by the next day will lose their spot to a wait-listed person.

If you guys know any Civil Engineers - please let me them know to sign-up! I just received confirmation that Kimley-Horn will be attending.
