UCLA Engineering Q&A

hi, can anyone tell me the difference between the electrical engineering computer engineering option in the EE dept. and the Computer science and engineering major in computer science/???

i am currently in ee is it possible to switch b/w depts…? and if anyone could explain the diff between the majors that woudl be awesome. thanks!

avoid that professor like the plague!

Like fatedreality stated, some EEs think semiconductor physics is harder than the other pathways. But from talking to a couple of EE majors it’s that it feels as if you need to go to grad school to get a decent job, and a lot don’t plan on going to grad school. When I applied for summer internships I looked at IBM, Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, etc. for semiconductor and MEMS focused positions, but they were very limited. On the other hand, there is a bigger demand for students with emphasis in antennas and RF, IC, and DSP. So I think its the demand for new graduates with a strong background in RF, IC and DSP that lures a majority of undergrads to pursue those pathways.

The way you described on what you plan to do for MEMS is what put me off from choosing it. That approach feels like taking random elective classes without any focus on a certain area. You’re taking an antenna class, a circuits class, semiconductor lab, and a MEMS class.

I need some help with classes for this Fall =]. I’m going to be a 3rd year EECE

I’m definitely taking EE 115A. I’m also taking EE 110L but deciding between Babaie and Stafsudd. Any suggestions?

Other than that… I was thinking about taking CS 118, since the professor (LU, S.) is supposed to be good. HOWEVER… I have not taken CS 111 yet, and it is a prereq. My friend says that says that it isn’t really needed… is this true? Also, is it a lot of work? Like CS 111?

Lastly… I was thinking about taking Mat Sci M105 (the first nanotech class), since I am considering doing the nanotech technical breadth. Has anyone taken that class or heard anything about it or about the Nanotechnology technical breadth in general? I’m pretty much deciding between Nanotech and CS for TB.

I enrolled in EE 110L with Babaie, CS 118, and MSE M105 already for my first pass, but I can change them. I was thinking about EE 131A (in place of MSE 105, since same time), but it’s with Wesel who is supposed to be hard right? And I could take a GE (Philos 7) in place of CS 118, if it will be too hard.

Summary:
EE 115A
EE 110L (Babaie or Stafsudd)
CS 118 or GE (Philos 7)
MSE 105 or EE 131A

I know that was a lot ><. Thanks so much :]

Had it with Babaie last quarter and it was pretty easy. He has a really good TA (Jonathan Friedman) and they’re both really smart. Major downfall for Babaie is that he lectures FOREVER on all the labs. He goes really in-depth (which can be both good and bad) for each part in the lab.

I’ve had Stafsudd for EE110 and he was not a good professor at all. Really unstructured and pretty monotone - stopped going after week 1.

Haven’t taken it yet but I heard it’s a lot of work…like CS111. definitely going to treat it lightly my senior year

Thanks so much for the help :]. I’ll prob just stick to Babaie… Yeah I heard he lectures a lot… does that mean that there isn’t enough time to get the labs finished in time? If we don’t finish… can we come in another time to finish or something? Cause I have class right after…

Crap… so CS 118 is a lot of work ><…

So are you graduating at the end of this year =]? Taken CS 111 yet? or taking both this year =P?

You should be able to finish the labs in class (although my partner and I generally finished first for most of the labs). Otherwise, you will be able to come in at a later time and work on it…you just need to set up a time with the professor since he or the TA has to be there. Just try to stay awake during his lecture or else he’s going to take a verbal jab at you lol.

Yup I’ll be graduating this year! I was thinking about graduating a quarter early (take CS152B during the summer) but figured that it would be pointless. I took CS111 last year…had a really good partner and we did pretty well. Pretty enjoyable class but not fun if you have other time consuming responsibilities/classes.

I would take Staffsud over Babaie. Babaie will make you do every part of the lab that’s in the lab manual so it takes longer than it should. Honestly, why would you want to know how to do the same thing 10 times? I’m not saying Staffsud is any better since he usually doesn’t teach EE 110L, but at least he had a good curve for EE 110 so I’m assuming he’ll do the same for 110L. I don’t know, he goes off on tangents and you might end up not knowing what to do during the lab.

hi. i have a few questions. i am an international student from vietnam coming to ucla this year as a CSE major. though i want to stay at ucla my parents want me to try and transfer to berkeley. i would be thankful if you could plzz answer these questions for me. thanxxx.

1) how difficult is it to transfer from ucla to berkeley?

2) how difficult is it to get in from CSE at ucla to EECE at berkeley? what else could i get into at berkeley?

3) is it difficult for transfer students to be involved in student organizations and assume leadership positions?

4) when i go for interview, will i have to say i was a transfer student?

5) how likely is a transfer to mit, princeton or stanford (PMS)?

6) are high school records required for transfer application. to berkeley and to PMS(lol)?

7) what would be the acceptance rate for ucla students wanting to go to berkeley? plzz provide an estimate if you cant provide exact figure.

8) any suggestions how i can boost my chance to get into PMS or berkeley on transfer. my high school grades are not very good.

i know there are a lot of questions. but help would be appreciated. even if you can answer 1 or 2 questions. plzz plzzz do. thanks!!!

EE 1 - EE Physics 1
EE M16 - Logic Design
Computer Science 31
(I already took a physics sequence and 2 CS classes in community college)

How much free time would I have with this schedule?
How much free time would I have if I took MATH 132 CMPLX ANLY-APLICTNS in addition to the other 3 classes ?
(assuming I want to get A or A- in all the classes)

Bruin2013, transferring between UC’s is extremely difficult (sorry if that’s not the answer you were hoping for). The truth is that UC tranfers try to accommodate as many transfers from community colleges as they can. Obviously it’s a much bigger difference to go from CC to UCLA/UCB than to go from UCLA to UCB, which in my honest opinion, doesn’t really have a difference. Both have extraordinary programs and you won’t be disappointed by UCLA.

kostoberist:
if you’ve already taken two cs classes in a community college, try to petition out of cs31 (if its not already approved)

will cs m51a be doable if i only took cs31 and ee1?
(btw cs m51a is exactly the same as ee m16a right?)

bruin2013,

1) answered by nooob

2) answered by nooob

3) No, just try it.

4) Probably not. They might ask if it’s a transfer from two great schools i.e. UCLA to Berkeley, Stanford to Princeton, etc.

5) It’s going to be hard. All of those schools have a low transfer rate. For example, Stanford had 1302 transfer applicants and admitted 1.9%.

6) I don’t know about PMS, but HS transcripts are not required for Berkeley.

7) Hard to make an estimate. Your best source is the stats posted on the UC website for all admits.

8) Get a 4.0 GPA, an amazing experience and involvement here, and great essays and letters of recommendations for PMS.

If you want to stay here than why are you even any effort in transferring out? If I were you and I wanted to stay at UCLA, I would just write some mediocre essays and stuff just so I can stay but tell my parents I tried.

2nd year EE here and my proposed schedule for next quarter is:
EE1
EE M16
Physics 4AL
Stats 10/Math 33b/random class depending on if I drop math 33b during summer school at CC

My question is, the reviews for the EE1 professor, Joshi, pretty much say he’s a ****ty teacher and shouldn’t expect him to teach much. Is it still worth taking this class with this professor? Or should I wait till winter quarter for a “better” teacher? This is assuming I have a very solid background in E&M physics from my high school AP physics class and the 1 series last year.

anyone know anything about nahapetian teaching cs M51A ?
Thanks

And is this class load enough ? or should i take one more class
math 33B dai
physics 1B whitten
physics 4al
cs m51A nahapetian

hey! quick question! :)

i’m up for o-session 111 (yeah- i know- sucks to be me!) and am going in as a comp sci and engg major. planned minor/double major: math OR mathematics/econs OR business econs (that’s ONLY if i don’t get completely slaughtered by the single major- which makes it rather unlikely). as an international, i did the singaporean-british a-levels. so i’m unsure if i get exempted from any GEs- so if anyone knows that- HELP! what kinda credit do you get for the a-levels and what’s the lowest credited grade? and second- IF i don’t get any credits- what classes should i look at? (i don’t mind taking 4 or more classes) help this n00b plan his next two quarters! thanks!! :)

nahapetian is pretty good, she prepares a lot, most definitely better than another m51a teacher potkonjak, but i dont know if she’d be as good as ercegovac

and 100%tuna, they plan out all engineering majors 4 years for classes

its here: [B.S</a>. in Computer Science and Engineering Curriculum](http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/curric08_09.html/Engineering%20Announcement%202008%20HTML/curriccompscieng.htm)

so that gives a pretty good idea of what to take each quarter

@bruin2013:

1) i personally know someone (international) who went from UVA to berkeley- so it’s not completely impossible- but the person isn’t really happy at berkeley- so don’t do it just for your parents… see if you think you like the berkeley atmosphere more- and like it by a lot- and then choose. personally, i was set on berkeley (and i just applied to LA- cuz well, all i had to do was click an extra button). later, when i got into both- i somehow loved UCLA and couldn’t get myself to like berkeley! so yeah! :)

2) the person i know went to EECE. that’s all i know!

3) well- i wouldn’t say it’d be as easy as getting involved as a freshman- i mean people with 2+ years of commitment do obviously have a higher chance of getting into office positions… but it really depends on you!!

4) well- if you have any research or awards or whatever in your 2 years at UCLA- you’ll probably want to write that on your resume. so that’ll tell them!!

5) as an international- next to impossible (and princeton doesn’t accept transfers).

6) berkeley: NO! others: not really considered a lot- but you do have to submit 'em!

7) i remember reading somewhere that around 25ish percent of UC-to-UC transfer apps get through to berkeley- dunno about UCLA specifically.

8) obviously do very very well! get involved, get a great GPA, take your classes carefully- i think berkeley has a cap to the number of units you can complete before transferring- just do and be the best that you can!! :)

hope this helps! NOW PEOPLE- GO ANSWER MY QUESTION ^^^! lol!

@iamrightuarewrong: thanks for the link! really informative! but what about the planned minor- wouldn’t i need to take some classes for that right from the beginning? and how many classes per quarter can i take- max?
