i think its like 20 units max without a petition

and yes you’d need to take the extra classes but i’m not sure how you would fit them in, it would be extremely hard to fit in a minor with all those classes and still only take 4 years.

aah- i can’t do more than 4 (international student and my visa’s valid for a max of 4 years). well, i know i could find this on the UCLA website- but it’d save me time if you guys could answer this. let’s say i wanna minor in math or business econs… how many SEPARATE units would i be required to do in either of them. and how many for the double-major (though i’m pretty sure that’s like an impossibility) :(

I had EE1 with Joshi as well. The reviews are pretty much right on. I didn’t see a reason to go to class and at that time, homework was “optional” and not worth anything. To be honest I would say you might as well take it anyway. I’ve yet to hear of ANY decent professor teaching EE1 and it’s overall not that bad. Especially if you have a solid background in physics from hs, don’t worry.

I think you’d have a pretty well-balanced quarter if you took just those 3 classes. Especially given your background in CS already - CS31 should be a breeze. Your grade will really be based on the midterm and final (average for projects is pretty high).
EEM16 can be a toss-up in terms of how time consuming it is based on the professor. I had the guy who wrote the book and hw was pretty reasonable - 2 or so hours. But then there are those that assigned PAGES of hw questions which I thought was ridiculous. Not sure about the professor for fall…probably should look into that.
EE1 with Joshi was pretty useless…I think you’ll find you won’t really have to bother with class and hw is straight from the book AND it was optional the quarter I took it - so in essence you could have the freedom to spend barely any time at all for that class.

Math132 is another toss-up class. It’s a class that a number of EE majors dread because you’re in a class full of math majors so all the proofs and concepts come more easily to them because it’s not their first upper div math class. I was pretty lucky when I took it this past quarter because my professor wanted to keep things as simple as possible. Math132 can be a real nightmare if the professor so chooses.

So given the best case scenario where EEM16 and Math132 don’t have crazy profs - a schedule with all 4 classes is pretty doable - again assuming that having taken some CS classes you’re pretty efficient at getting projects done.

Sorry that’s not very definitive…hope it helps a little bit!

1)
how does my fall schedule look?

EE101
EE110
Physics 4BL

and either EE103 or EE131a.

am i in for a rough quarter? and how is the difficulty and workload of 131a compared to 103?

2)
@fatedreality: who was your math132 prof?
and does anyone know if any particular math132 is especially good/easy?

Actually if you take EE131A with that schedule, I’d say it’s actually not so bad. Just as long as you stay atop doing homework every week…I’d say you’d be in pretty good shape for your classes overall. EE101 and EE110 are both medium difficulty in terms of grasping concepts I’d say (EE110 is probably a breeze for those who just like circuits a whole lot). Physics 4bl will of course be painfully time-consuming, but if you get into the habit of just working on the lab right after (when everything’s pretty fresh in your head) and finishing them ahead of time- then I’d say you’re all set.

I’d definitely go with EE131A over EE103 with your current schedule because EE131A is notoriously easy the first half of the quarter (allowing you plenty of time to gain footing in your other classes) and then do your best to pay attention the 2nd half when things suddenly pick up and get all confusing (just be ready for it).
EE103 on the other hand, imo, is painful abstract matrix analysis with matlab thrown in - I’m actually taking it this quarter because I can no longer delay the inevitable and don’t want to mar the rest of my senior year haha. I think the reason I despite it so much is because I haven’t met a single person who could say that EE103 was at all relevant or helpful to our whole curriculum.

Mine was Fernandez. He’s not teaching this quarter and I’m unfamiliar with the profs listed. However what I did to choose my professor was look at bruinwalk and I chose him because he had just taught a lower div math class and received good reviews. That’s how I knew he’d be a good person to take for math132 since he’d be less likely to want to complicate things.

I have myself caught in a dilemma. For this upcoming fall quarter I’m planning on taking:

ee1
math 32B
math 33A

but that’s not the problem. The problem is taking the next quarter into account. I have not taken cs 32 yet and am looking for an opportunity to take it. It’s not offered fall quarter so winter quarter would be nice if I wasn’t taking ee 103 at the same time since I heard that was really hard. Winter quarter looks like:

EE 103
Phys 4BL
math 33b

so far but that’s only 10 units. Should I just take cs 32 with those classes assuming i get into them or am i thinking ahead too much? Help!

I’m a 2nd year btw

I would NOT suggest taking CS32 on top of your current winter load. Why don’t you replace EE103 with CS32? In my opinion it’s better to take CS32 asap (as close to CS31 as possible) since EE103 is really disjoint and it honestly doesn’t matter when you take it…I mean the same can be said for CS32 but I see a lot of people struggle with it having pushed it later.

anyone out there with advice for 4th class?
I plan to take Math 32B, Phys 1c and Phys lab 4BL. I never took any CS in high school, so i want to postpone CS31 until winter or spring quarter (let all the new incoming CS freshmen take it fall quarter). I have schedule conflict with MAE94, and Eng 183EW (to finish off my writing req), and I can’t take Eng185EW (must be junior). I already took MSE104. MAE 102, MAE103 etc all need more math.
ideally, i’d like to take a W-course to kill off my writing req. any other suggestions to try for 2nd pass?

Is discussion for EE M16 “mandatory”? ie will there be quizzes or anything of that nature

3rd year MAE major:

MAE 104
MAE 105
MAE 107
??

How time-consuming/hard are these 3?

Any suggestions for a 4th class? I’ve taken CS31, MAE 101, 102, 103, 182a, and 3 GE electives. MAE94 is full (again!).

Thanks.

There were quizzes in my discussion for cs m51a which is the same as eem16.

I’m an incoming freshman majoring in CS and I was thinking about this schedule:

CS 1 - Cong
Chem 20A - Baugh
Math 31B - Khan
CS 31 - Smallberg

Because they overlapped so much this is really about the only schedule possible with these classes (they would go from 11:00 - 4:00). What would I do about lunch?

I heard that you should avoid Baugh and I couldn’t find Khan on Bruinwalk.
Advice?

And if I shouldn’t take this schedule, what should I take instead?

Looks like a pretty good freshman fall quarter schedule. Don’t know anything about Chem20A professors though.

Depending on the location of your classes, you may be able to grab something (most likely seas cafe) in the 10-minute period and eat in class. Or you can bag a lunch from the dining halls/grab something from Bruin Cafe and take it to campus.

Hi Flopsy.

I would really appreciate any advice, suggestion, or opinion you have (or anyone else really):

I’m a freshman in University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), and I’m planning to transfer to UCLA for electrical engineering (I haven’t finalized yet). Is it worth it (from an educational point of view)? I’m OOS for both colleges, and the costs are similar. I know UMich’ program is better, but is it a considerable or just a slight difference?

Also, how recognized is the UCLA electrical engineering degree (nationwide, or internationally)?

Thank you in advance.

Cheers.

@Bruingirl: Baugh… is terrible. Go to class, pay attention and read the book. I seemingly can’t figure out where he got his test questions from, and his grading system is pretty messed up IMO. (All points NOT earned on midterms get shifted to the final, so you can get an A if you do well on the final and the final only). I’ve had friends that did well, and I didn’t take him @ my academic peak (had him for 20B), so be prepared to work hard for that class.

Why the switch?

I’m still deciding to transfer, due to family moving just outside of LA (hence the total costs won’t change).

I have decided to take Chem 20A next quarter since Baugh seems horrible. I was thinking about taking a GE instead.

How about this:
CS 1 - Cong
Southeast Asian Studies 1 - Dutton
CS 31 - Smallberg
Math 31B - Khan

There were quizzes in my CS51A. Discussion wasn’t mandatory neither was lecture. It was recommended that we attend, specially for quiz and exam days.
