secrets of the trade?

Hey guys, I’m a CS major, and I’m trying to decided whether I should take CS35L before taking CS33. I heard that there’s a strong likelihood that Rohr will teach CS33 in Spring, and I want to avoid him if possible. My question is- are there topics from CS33 in CS35L? Or is there another reason why I shouldn’t take CS35L first?

Thanks!

Go ahead and take CS35L before CS33…you won’t be needing anything from CS33 for the class. I also suggest taking CS33 with Reinman :)

Is Reinman regularly teaching CS33 now? I had thought that Rohr would be the only one teaching it since Smallberg now teaches CS31 more often instead.

As an aside I’d recommend taking CS35L with Carbajal. His tests were a little on the hard side but I really enjoyed his section.

Thanks for the responses!

Reinman taught CS33 this fall, so I’m hoping that he’ll do the same next year. I’ll end up with Eggert for CS35L though for this spring, but the reviews for him on Bruinwalk don’t seem too bad.

i’m a sophomore and couldn’t get into MAE102 or PHYS 4BL. they were filled before my enrollment time. i’m looking at doing the 8 week summer session, otherwise, i’m not graduating on time. looks like MAE94, MAE102, MAE 103, MAE105A and MAE182A are offered this summer. what’s the max #units allowed for summer? of course, i’m not going to take all of them together, but i want to get 4BL out of the way. Is 94, 4BL and another MAE class going to killl me?

CS35L is a lab class so the professor doesn’t really teach the course. He’s more of an administrator and sets up the course topics and assignments. The TAs are the ones that will teach you the material.
How many classes can I take during the summer?

UCLA Undergraduates
UCLA College of Letters and Science students may enroll in up to 18 units. Undergraduates from other UCLA schools may enroll in up to 16 units.

Dang, Darrell is still a TA for CS35L? But anyways, he’s the lead TA for the class so you won’t go wrong with signing up for his section.

^ How can you tell which TA teaches which section?

For CS35L, there is not much “teaching” going on from the TAs from my experience… -_-

The TA is the first listed name and the second name (Eggert) is the “professor” for the class.

Example:
would be Darrell’s section

Greasemonkey for CS31 shows ISBN 9780558155872 (smallberg, c++, 3rd Ed, with CODEMATE). i can’t find this isbn anywhere. Will i have to buy it from UCLA bookstore as custom edition? I can’t even find it at all on bruinwalk. Is codemate required (can i get a used one from at the end of quarter when people start listing books again?)

For Math 33A, greasemonkey couldn’t pull up ISBN for the required “looseleaf bundle with access card” for Bretscher’s linear algebra. Is the access card required for homework, etc? i was hoping to buy just the text and solution manual separately, but if i need an access card, then i’m stuck again.
thanks all!

^ For CS31, you probably don’t need the textbook unless you’re frequently lost on the subject and want to read it. Many people I know bought the book and didn’t use it.

the access card seems new, but all you really need is the bretscher text
