I’m gonna go third on A in ethics without usage of the textbook (I ordered the wrong one, got a refund and never ordered the right one… lucky me.)

@imrightuarewrong: Yeah, stuff like that happens all the time.

Wow! So many A’s in ethics here. Without the textbook too! This is encouraging. Thanks!

@lajolla3, it’s really more about getting good written work down than anything. Choose a research topic you’re interested in too since you’ll be spending many hours there.

just graduated UCLA Engineering. Summa Cum Laude, 3.9 GPA. For those of you wondering if its possible…it is.

Yea but what major were you.

Aerospace Engineering.

^ i know plenty of people with 4.0 in MAE and Civil so you’re not anything special

There are none (atleast in MAE) this academic year.

^ how do you know that? Source?

i know a lot of people in that department. the senior level classes are only offered once a year, so take them and you know your classmates pretty well.

i didn’t know the MAE department was that small and that the curriculum was structured to force all the graduating seniors to take the senior level classes at the same time.

i was assuming it was like the EE department where it’s hard to meet and greet everyone. in EE, people can do their pathway (i.e. electives, lab, and design) courses their junior year, and do the left over classes their senior year. Then there are fifth years, who have done some weird combination of classes.

MAE is big, but there is a senior level series that is a set of several classes not offered every quarter. In Mechancal, the courses are sometimes offered twice a year, but in Aerospace, only once. If you fail one of those, you’re in trouble. Nonetheless, yes, you are “forced” to take it (and although there are a few exceptions, you MUST take them in the order prescribed by HSEAS). So yes, ME is a bit bigger and there are some options on the senior level courses, but they are limited. Having said that, by the time you make it to your senior year, you’ve at least seen all of the people in your graduating class, and some more people (older or younger).

And yes, there are weird things like 5th years (i was one of those). However, I took the senior level series my 4th year, and finished off some other classes 5th year. I already know a lot of people from MAE simply by hanging out in SEASLAB and being a friendly person. Haha, and don’t underestimate the word of mouth. Word spreads when someone has a 4.0 and everyone knows it. I’m sure you’ve heard of some crazy smart people in EE by friends (i might even know them lol)

only if that person is very vocal about it. even then it doesn’t spread like wildfire. perhaps i’m not a part of the gossip circles?

it seems that talking about GPA is a taboo subject so i never ask even people i know well.

no, i haven’t. i haven’t heard of anyone that is “crazy smart” to be called the second coming of Maxwell.

I think that’s true, there’s people who I don’t even know in TBP and I know they have 4.0 … heard it through tutoring hours.

^ You find out the same way I did? lol. I actually saw someone’s resume on the table (apparently the back side was being used a scratch paper), and was thinking “Daaang. That’s a mean GPA.” Forgot the name and the GPA, but was just amazed high GPAs and engineering major existed.

seems like TBP is the place to be

i guess it makes sense that TBP would know if there are any 4.0 since they post their list of invites.

does C&EE 105: Technical Communication count as a technical breadth for C&EE? I know that its course number falls in the correct range, but just wanted to double check because it is a writing class. has anyone taken it? how is it?

Of course it’s possible. During your time at UCLA, you’re bound to meet at least one person that’s crazy smart that can ace any class with any professor. I met 2 during my undergrad and can truly say they were freaking smart. Yea they had 4.00’s ,but what of it? I didn’t even know until after graduation. Just by taking courses with them and discussing course material you could really tell that they knew their stuff.

So the point is, take GPA with a grain of salt. For all you know, the person could have taken the most BS, easiest class, and professor possible. From personal experience of course

It’s koo if you got a 4.00, just writing that big on top of your graduation hat (spring 08 commencement ) is…uhhh…
