UCLA Engineering Q&A

ee100 depends on your teacher apparently, but its easier for sure. if they let you get away with it, take it instead of 10 and 110. 115a didn’t really need 110…

they’ll tell you everything at orientation… don’t worry

I’m a CS major and i’m looking at potential classes to satisfy my “Sci-Tech” classes. I am interested in Option 3 in choosing 3 upper div classes from a separate area of study.

Now if I choose an area like Economics, does that mean I have to start taking all the Lower Div Economic classes? Like if I want to take Econ 101 Microeconomic Theory, I would have to take Econ 1, 2, and 11 as they are the enforced pre-reqs. That’s a whole quarter worth of classes just to take one Sci Tech =(.

I’m interested in taking Sci Tech classes NOT in CS field, but it seems I would have to take so many additional classes. Is there a way around this?

Also does anyone know about the Informational Studies major/area and what it’s about?

Lastly, whats the most common method for CS majors to fullfill the Sci Tech Requirement?

Hey guys, I’m an incoming freshman planning to major in EE and all of this talk seems like jargon to me. I’m going to orientation soon, so will my confusion be settled somewhat by the time I attend? There is a lot of anxiety building up from just reading this thread, and I might need a Tylenol or something after haha.

If there’s a website or advice about what classes I need to take or what subjects I should brush up on, that would be helpful and appreciated!

you’re gonna have a really really hard quarter lol… i heard that when you take 131 you should optimally buffer it with really easy classes… I’m taking 180 right now and its pretty tough =d theres a lot of reading too x.x haha its pretty much a math class disguised as a CS class. everything is proofs D:

if you’re CS, take CS31 fall. Although i guess its not MANDATORY, it’s a really really good idea, since CS32 is only offered winter, and you HAVE to take CS31 to take CS32. And you have to take CS32 to take CS33. Pretty much if you dont take it youll be really really behind.

heres what hsseas recommends for both CS and CSE

BTW - check out UPE next year :] its the CS honor society on campus. They hold lots of infosessions and whatnot, and i tHINK they have a class planning workshop for spring, just for CS and CSE majors.

my friend and i are both planning on doing scitech in econ. If you’re willing to take summer sessions, i think you can take Econ 1 and Econ 2 concurrently in session C. Unfortunately, unless you took Econ (or, i guess any prereqs from other fields) in CC i dont think theres any way around this requirement. you could just… not take econ? o.O

i know for engineering fields that fulfill sci tech, if you take Mech E, for example, the lowerdiv requirements are the same as those for CS, so you won’t have to take additional lowerdivs in order to take upperdiv Mech E. I think the same applies for CEE, and most of the other non bio/chem E engineering options.

idk … i dunno what to take for scitech either haha…

anyone know how CS181 with Parker is?

Is it ok to take CS 51A instead of EE M16? I’m an EE major and I was going to take M16 but then Nahapetian’s class was full, and the only other option was Cabric. Nahapetian has open spots on CS 51A though.

Edit: Also, I’m trying to check if I’ve cleared the requisites for EE 101. Does anybody know what course 1 in “(course 1 or Physics 1C) and ((Math 32A and 32B) or (33A and 33B))” means? Is it EE1?

Thanks guys :)

Yes, CS M51A is equivalent to EE M16.

Yes, course 1 refers to EE 1.

which is more time consuming/harder
chem 113a or chemE 104B

ESUC Lounge (Boelter Hall 5800) when an officer is there. If you are an incoming freshmen, you have a chance to buy one during Engineering Welcome Day.

Is Abidi the only one teaching EE10? I have a choice to take it this fall or spring 2011 but BruinWalk has very intimidating reviews. Should I just bite the bullet or is it worth waiting until spring for? I’m currently an incoming junior.

Abidi is perhaps the hardest professor in EE, but he’s also one of the best. I would take him for EE 10, and then continue with the rest of the circuits classes with him. I would not take him for 115A or 115B without taking the pre-reqs with him because you will find yourself working twice as hard like people did Winter quarter. He will teach you circuits in a very conceptual and intuitive way rather than just give you a circuit to determine the biasing points. IMO, a B from Abidi is worth more than an A+ from other professors. However, GPA is also important so it’s your call.

Yes, he’s an arrogant ■■■■■■■.

Make sure you have a good TA too. You can always enroll and decide to drop it by 4th wee.

Thanks, sounds good. TA’s aren’t in the sched yet but hopefully I get a good one.

EE10 is an easy class, but anything taught by abidi isn’t going to be easy. there was an article in the daily bruin about how he failed all but one kid in his class haha

[The Daily Bruin | Students claim professor was unfair in grading system of electrical engineering class](http://www.dailybruin.com/articles/2010/5/11/students-decry-poor-grades-engineering-class/)

Wow. That was just 2 months ago…

you also have to take into account that a lot of the class took 10, 110, 115A with Staffsud, Kaiser, Chang, etc. and those professors don’t know how to teach circuits. they just give you textbook questions on the exams. Abidi said he was going to teach it at a higher level than most would understand, but i think he was surprised how much the class was struggling.

you have the option of dropping the class with abidi by 4th week so you might as well sit in. I would sit in on his class and take notes, but i would not enroll in it because GPA is important after all.

take him if you’re smart, brave, stupid, whatever. otherwise don’t do it

I see… has anybody here taken a class with him?

Does anyone know anything about how easy or difficult is technology management as a technical breadth? i am really considering doing it but i dont know anything about economics or finance or any of this stuff.

Also, for engr110 can i depend on not having to go to discussion? thanks
