UCLA Engineering Q&A

Really? People have been telling me that CS 31 and Chem 20a are not at all recommended for Freshman. =/

Taking both at the same time isn’t recommended. One or the other is usually ok.

ya i wasn’t sure if it was chem 20a that was paired with cs31 lol since im skipping chem 20a it just blew by and i don’t remember LOL

I took both at the same time. It’s not bad at all.

What’s the minimum GPA that an engineer has to maintain?

Can I bring a pair of nunchakus to UCLA? Will them be seemed as deadly weapon?
Thx!

California Penal Code section 12020:
(a)Any person in this state who does any of the following is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or in the state prison:
(1)…imports into the state…or possesses … any nunchaku …
(b)Subdivision (a) does not apply to any of the following:…
(3)The possession of a nunchaku on the premises of a school which holds a regulatory
or business license and teaches the arts of self-defense.

Also, UCLA Policy 131 prohibits nunchaku.

So leave them home!

Okay…I will leave them home. What a policy! Thank you very much!

The textbook for computer science 31 is the Absolute C++ book 4th edition right?

That’s what it’s been historically. It doesn’t really matter what book you use for CS 31 since it’s typically used as a reference.

What graduate degree majors do EECE undergrads typically pursue? Can they choose to get graduate degrees in CS or EE?

Thanks.

Typically, EECE majors apply for EE graduate degrees. However, there’s nothing stopping EECE majors from applying to CS programs, and they would be competitive applicants for either department.

I’m a CSE major and need a CS elective this fall quarter. I need to choose between EE103 (Vandenberghe) and CS 136 (Reiher), which are offered at the same time. Any suggestion on which one would be a better elective? Which one would be easier? Thanks!

From what I understand, 103 is one of the toughest classes in the EE department. I heard 136 is pretty interesting, so I would probably pick that (though I’m a little biased towards CS classes).

Yeah, considering the horrible reviews for EE103, I should probably pick CS136. I have a hard time choosing, cuz so far I’ve had an easier time and better grades in EE classes than in CS. But I’m guessing EE 103 might be an exception to that trend!

Is it important what kind of GE courses you take, also is it preferable to buy books from the college book store so it is easier to resell. Thanks

No, it’s not important. And it depends on the book; some have better price-to-resale than others.

Ackerman bookstore is always a ripoff. And buying there doesn’t make it any easier to resell.

Use Textbooks Plus store on westwood blvd. (fyi, I don’t have any monetary incentive for recommending them.)
