UCLA Engineering Q&A

In the earlier pages of this forum, I read that we can switch majors during Orientation. Is this also true of Undecided Engineering students? My counselor just said that I had to fulfill the 3.0 GPA & Engr 98 req, which will take at least a quarter. The thing is, I don’t know if the ‘switching during orientation’ thing is just an unofficial thing which works, or if it just doesn’t apply to Undecided HSSEAS people.

I’m asking about this because now I definitely want a CS major now and I can’t enroll in CS 31 yet (and may not get a place), my Chem/ Math credits won’t be recognized until Winter Quarter, so I’m probably gonna take 3 GEs, Engr 98 and CS 31 (if I get it) for freshman quarter since I can’t take Math/ Physics courses.

It seems like I may not be able to graduate in 4 years with internships/research if I don’t start with CS 31…

You should be able to get into CS 31, just attend the first week or so, and they’ll most likely enroll you. When in doubt, contact the HSSEAS Office of Student Affairs. They’re the ones who actually process these requests, so you’d be getting your answers from the source.
You can’t switch majors to or within HSSEAS during orientation.

Uhm when i went to orientation, they told us that we’re not allowed to switch majors until we’re done with our second quarter…i’m in hsseas btw.

Thanks guys. Managed to get into CS 31. Think there was an error with ursa lol.

Anybody’s done SRP?

CS students don’t really do SRP. You end up working on much cooler projects when talking to professors directly.

Do you think it’s next to impossible to achieve a 3.8 GPA in EE?

I know several people who graduated with above 3.8 in EE. See my post in the [thread you started](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/1208042-getting-stellar-gpa-south-campus-major.html).

I’m in the MSOL program and I want to take a couple courses over the base requirements (program requires 9 four unit courses, and I want to take 13). Would I be able to apply any of these to a post MS program (Engineer or PhD)? If I entered the Engineer degree program, would I have to start from scratch, start from the additional four, or start with all thirteen courses? Since all of the courses are technically “beyond the bachelor’s degree.”

Also, is there any way to complete the Engineer degree online? I think I can find enough courses in the UNEX/MSOL program to fulfill all of the requirements…

Thanks!

How programming heavy is CS 143 (Database Systems)?

And I’ve read in the past that CS doesn’t enforce requisites, so does that mean a student could get in without taking CS 32?

It depends on your professor, but there’s usually around 3 assignments, usually consisting of things like creating a website (and maybe its underlying database).

You don’t have to worry about requisites, though being a solid programmer definitely helps in 143.

I am an incoming freshmen and I would like an upperclassman’s opinion on which classes I should buy books for
I am currently taking for the fall quarter
Math 33B (i think i need)
Com Sci 1 - don’t need
Com Sci 31 ~ not sure
Pol Sci 10 (i think i need)

The books for Poli Sci 10 are probably relatively cheap, but since they’re also likely to be more common you might want to look into getting them from the UCLA library or a public library (LAPL). That way you’re not paying anything.

I’m thinking of switching to a HSSEAS major (Computational and Systems Biology). How hard is it to switch? When can I petition for a major change?

Also, I’ve already signed up for a GE cluster. Should I continue with it or should I stop after the fall quarter to make room for other prereqs (CS 31 and 32).

You don’t need the CS 31 book. It’s just a reference and the internet works just as well. The Math 33B book is probably necessary for homework problems.

It’s not hard to switch provided your grades are solid. I would ask someone 6426 Boelter Hall directly about when you can switch. If you’re set on HSSEAS, I don’t recommend the cluster because schedule flexibility is a big deal, and you won’t need as many GEs in HSSEAS anyway.

Yeah, the thing is I’m still at a crossroads. I can probably decide after fall quarter though. I guess I can just drop out of the cluster then…

How important it is to attend the discussion session of the engineering and math classes? I find many TAs are not good at explaining things and often confuse me even more. Does the exam cover what TA talks about? I am a transfer student so I had no TA experience.

Depends on the class. Usually they’re completely optional, but sometimes there may be quizzes or required participation in discussions (this is rare). Generally speaking, if you don’t find them useful, you don’t have to attend.

I see, Thanks for your reply!

Hi I’m planning to attend some of the industry info sessions next week. What is the dress code for this kind of events? The Samsung flyer doesn’t say anything besides the place and time, so I’m a little confused. Should I still bring copies of my resume?
