Unfortunately, unlike for my year, AP exams don’t let you get out of GE classes. It looks like you can skip Math 31A and 31B and Chem 20A. I recommend skipping all 3.

The best time to take a GE class is when you (inevitably) can’t fill your schedule with non-GE classes you like. Check bruinwalk.com to figure out which GEs are easy. There are plenty of GEs that are not GPA boosters.

Google the terms UCLA AP credit. On the “AP Credit - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions” page, follow the links for the School of Engineering, and see that the answer is different to that for the College of Letters and Science. In Engineering, a 5 in Calc BC is good for Math 31A only.

Oh Thats interesting O_O. I guess they changed it this year if thats true? I skipped ou of math31A with a 5 in AB. Either way, during your orientation someone is going to present all this info and tell you what your allowed to skip.

The problem is that’s last year engineering announcement, who knows if they changed the guidelines?? Tolucafan95, honestly the best info you can get is from orientation or you can call in and ask cause this info is from last year, so it might have changed who knows tell you ask the right people? Unless someone on this forum says, “Im a NSA at orientation, this is the guideline now” or something, you can’t be sure. And even if you can’t skip out of math 31A, you’ll might still get units for just taking the ap test.

With a 5 on the AB Calculus you have the option to skip Math 31A if you want to. They don’t actually award credit for 31A, since you have the option to not skip it. But if you start at 31B, then they’ll know that you’re using your AP credit to skip 31A.

Similarly, a 5 on the BC requires that you skip 31A (which is why they award “course credit” for 31A), but you have the option to skip 31B if you want to. That’s why they don’t award credit for 31B, because if the course is posted to your record then the registrar’s system would consider taking 31B an unauthorized repeat. But if you start at 32A, then the computer system will know that you’re using your 5 on the BC on 31B.

I think this is the most updated page in terms of AP Credits (last updated Mar 2012):
[AP Credit - School of Engineering and Applied Science - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/APCreditEN.htm)
but yeah, I would either ask your NSA or contact your department counselor. There are so many changes this year that none of us (unless someone here is a NSA or works within the Office of Student Affairs) can provide you with accurate information.

Are there more opportunities from UCLA or UC Berkeley CS, if theyre relatively the same ill apply EECS to Berkeley because ild prefer to go to LA but can’t turn down that job stability of EECS.

Depends on what you want. Big companies recruit at both universities, but elite startups stick to the Bay Area (and maybe MIT/CMU). If you’re a good software developer, it’s not hard to get a job coming out of either university.

I agree with grapesoda, if you want a software developer position (or a position relating to that), it’s not hard to get one once you graduate. At UCLA, there’s something called the Engineering Technical Career Fair every quarter, and hundreds of companies (ranging from big companies like Google to smaller ones like LinkedIn) will come to talk about their companies and opportunities. I know there’s something similar at Berkeley too, so job stability shouldn’t be a problem out of either university.

So has anyone here had Orzan for EE101 or any other class I guess?? I don’t know if I should drop cs33, since I don’t know if i plan on going to cs option, for EE101. Whats the difficulty of EE101 normally? I haven’t taken Math 33A and Math 33B or EE1, Math 33A and EE1 will be part of my fall schedule though.

Has anyone taken Barnese for CHEM20A? Wanted to know what he stresses in that class (Conceptual angle? Equations?) so I can get a jump on it (taking it in winter).

Hi, I was junior cs major student at UCLA but now I’m in my country for military duty.
I want to study my major subjects in the army but I can’t do programming here. So, I want to study CS subjects which are more theory based than programming based.

Is any subject for me except CS180 & CS181? I will study those subjects in army.

I hadn’t checked for a few years whether engineering counselor Mi Suk Kwon was still at UCLA. Looks like she’s been gone since 2008 and this is really great for engineering students. She was one of the rudest, least helpful people I’ve ever met in my life, not just as a counselor. I can’t tell you how many students I’ve spoken to, whom she screwed over by either giving them bad advice or wrong information. She had no interest in helping students and I’m not sure why she ever had the job or how she was evaluated in terms of job performance. I certainly would have fired her. Thankfully, Jan LaBuda is still there. She’s super friendly and helpful.

I am planning to take English Composition 3 Proficiency exam in October. Will you tell me how to sign up for the test? Can you also guide me to some materials that may help me prepare for it? English is not really something I enjoy and I did not take any AP Eng in my HS.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you all for the help.

Is it okay to take Math 33A and Math 33B concurrently? I heard that 33A is not a pre-requisite course for 33B, but it’s highly recommended that you take 33A before 33B. Would 33B be more difficult? Thank you.
