UCLA Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeals Discussion

Sorry for your loss.
You are not required to list Senior grades so you can submit the grades are not but if you do, you should include an explanation.

Thank you for all this information. Son was waitlisted and plans to stay on the waitlist for now.

Hi Gumbymom, I started my UCLA waitlist acceptance form today and filled in my grades. For sharing new accomplishments/developments, what format do you think is best, and what sort of things should/can we include? This is what I have brainstormed so far (I was wondering if you could give feedback as to which things I should or should not include):

  • National TEAMS Competition (a STEM competition by TSA, my 2nd year doing it)
  • Competed in the inaugural Wharton High School Sports Analytics Competition
  • Inner Engineering Program by Sadhguru (a global spiritual leader)
  • Taking practical steps to improve my health (Starting to go to the gym 5 times per week, fixing my sleep schedule, practicing yoga daily)
  • Persisting in my internship with Management Systems (a management consulting company) after the passing of the company’s founder (I mentioned this internship in my UC Activities List but the founder’s death and the situation after are new information)
  • Starting a project with mentorship from one of the co-founders of Bumper/Equip Solutions (I mentioned this internship in Entry 9 of my UC Activities List but this is a separate project) in order to learn how to code a web app related to sports statistics calculations

Other than the gym reference, all the additional accomplishments are fine. It is a statement so just be direct and to the point. Show UCLA why you would be an asset if admitted highlighting your skills and knowledge.

Got it, when you say the gym reference, are you alluding to just the gym reference or the entire bullet point that mentions sleep and yoga? Additionally, since this isn’t an essay, should I format it like an email or as a bulleted list similar to what I have above (with some edits and cleaning up)?

I would remove the whole statement. Yes it is important to be of sound mind and body, but it is not something that I would include. You can format it anyway you want. They are not going to look at how you present the information but the content.

Okay, thank you Gumbymom, I really appreciate the feedback!

Is there a breakdown of these numbers based on colleges or majors?

Waitlist numbers are not broken out by college or major and the number of available spots will change yearly.

Any tips for the waitlist essay? I think it’s best to treat it as a “Why Us” essay?

Treat it as why me and highlight what you as a student can contribute to the UCLA campus.

Thank you for directing me to this thread!

Thank you. Do you know what is the yield per major?

Yield by major for the waitlist or regular admissions? For the waitlist no such data exists that I am aware.

There is enrolled data by college on this link: Admissions | Academic Planning and Budget

When reviewing for the waitlist, does UCLA read through all applications and then admit students, or admit as they go along the list? In other words, does the order at which they go through waitlist applications matter?

UCLA does not rank the waitlist so is not first waitlist statement in, hears first . UCLA will review their target enrollment numbers as it gets closer to the SIR date. If their enrolled numbers are lower than expected, then UCLA can start looking at the waitlist to fill in gaps. In general, after the May 15 SIR deadline is when most schools can see if they need to use their waitlist. As stated above in the original post:

AO’s say their selections are generally a continuation of the regular admission process, with consideration given to students’ original scores from application readers and whether their intended areas of study fill enrollment holes that year along with the waitlist essay and updated course/grades.

So all I see is a checkmark for joining the waitlist and a “submit” button. Does the form to add a statement and senior grades become available after you hit “submit”?

There are text boxes to fill in when accepting the waitlist option so this is where you would list new accomplishments, Senior grades and your waitlist statement.

If I have a dual enrollment class that I dropped and left a W on my college transcript, do I report that as part of my senior fall grades? Or do I only report what I got a letter grade on?

You would report what will be listed on the transcript since your transcript will be compared to your self-reported information.
