UCLA Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeals Discussion

UCLA decisions will be posting within the next few weeks so I have started the Waitlist/Appeal Discussion thread.

2023 Timeline: Few admits on April 21, 2023, April 28, 2023, April 29, 2023. May 6 small wave of admits including 1 OOS, In-state and International. More admits May 25, June 16, June 30. Some Denials posted July 15. Rare admit July 29.

Below is some previous years data and information regarding the Waitlist and Appeal process. The Waitlist admits will vary from year to year, so there is no way to gauge your chances of being admitted.

Last year, UCLA allowed the waitlisted students to submit a waitlist statement with new accomplishments and updated Senior grades.

AO’s say their selections are generally a continuation of the regular admission process, with consideration given to students’ original scores from application readers and whether their intended areas of study fill enrollment holes that year along with the waitlist essay and updated course/grades.

General Waitlist Information:

  1. No specific timeline for waitlist admits. If space opens up before the SIR deadline of May 15, then students can be pulled from the waitlist.
  2. Residency type and major are not broken out for the UC waitlist data.
  3. The number of enrolled waitlisted students is not listed.
  4. No LOCI’s since UC’s do not consider demonstrated interest. Opting into the waitlist shows your interest in attending.
  5. Opting into the waitlist is by invitation only.
  6. You cannot appeal your decision while on the waitlist.

New to this so forgive me if this is a redundant question, but how does it work if commitments due in/around May 1, but UCLA (and other schools for that matter) aren’t giving acceptances to waitlisted kids until much later after that?

SIR date for all the UC’s is May 15 this year due to delay in FAFSA processing.

If waitlisted, you will enroll in another school by the required deadline. If admitted by UCLA which is usually after the SIR date, you can decline the current school and lose your enrollment deposit and then accept UCLA’s offer or you can decline UCLA and remain with your current school.

Thank you. That is good to know if your kid accepted another UC offer, but what if your kid accepted outside the UC’s? I can’t imagine this ending well.

The student can accept any school. It will not make a difference. They can withdraw from any school if admitted off the waitlist.

For people who are waitlisted and choose to join the waitlist, it might be helpful for @Gumbymom to get information from you!

Is UCLA asking for the same type of waitlist statement as this description from last year?

Thanks Gumbymom!

Waitlisted, and she’s way more upset than I expected, given the odds. Yes, it says there’s space on the waitlist form to give new information or updates or I assume a statement. No letters of recommendation or any other docs. We’ll be opting in for sure, and I’m grateful she still has a shot, no matter how small. Thanks for starting the thread. I hope she feels better tomorrow morning, because she’s already been accepted to some excellent schools.

It is important to pay attention to the commit date for each school. Traditionally, it was May 1 nationwide.

This year, the UCs and CSUs pushed their date back to May 15, but in order for you to hold your spot at another school, you may need to commit to that school by May 1.

What type of information are we meant to put in the additional comments section of the waitlist form?

The waitlist statement should address new accomplishments and updated Senior grades so an extension of your application to show you would be an asset to UCLA.

AO’s say their waitlist selections are generally a continuation of the regular admission process, with consideration given to students’ original scores from application readers and whether their intended areas of study fill enrollment holes that year along with the waitlist essay and updated course/grades.

Should a letter of recommendation be send as well? If yes, From school teacher or boss would be preferred?
