Does anybody know UCSB’s internet data transfer limitation rate?

You cannot torrent if you are wondering about that. And AFAIK theres a system where students can share files on a central network within the campus so you can get your legally questionable items from there instead of torrenting.

There is. I believe between the hours of 1pm-1am you have unlimited bandwidth up to 768mb. After that, you’re rate limited to 512kb/sec.

Between 1am and 1pm, it’s unlimited bandwidth.

If you exceed the 768mb limit for consecutive days, you’re rate limited the 3rd day for the entire day despite what time it is. I believe it’s the 3rd day, it might be the fourth.

All the information is posted on https://info.resnet.ucsb.edu/status.php

So how fast is it when not throttled?

<a href=“Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test”>Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test;

With ethernet cable

From manzanita last year

So there is no torrenting at all allowed on the school network?

Guess I’ll have to tether from my phone if I need to torrent, I guess.

I believe if you’re caught torrenting, you’ll be blocked from internet access for 3 days for the first offence (it might be for a week). The second offence, for the quarter; if towards the end of the quarter, then for the next quarter. I don’t know what happens on your third offence.

My roommate freshman year got a month ban for torrenting music. Yeah, I’ve also heard that strike two was a quarter ban. Stay away from public torrents…there are others ways to safely download things from resnet

The internet can be pretty bad at times. At least in 08/09, streaming a whole movie on Netflix was asking a lot. If you want to transfer files, use DC++.

UCSBpremed can you use private trackers for torrenting? Or is it all non kosher?

I knew a few people last year who pulled tons of data with private trackers and nothing happened to them. I’m not sure about the quality of the trackers they used though.

So basically we just pirate on the intranet (resnet)?

Sounds okay.

I’ll stick to ripping music off youtube.

I can’t find where it says there’s a download cap. Any help?

So what about megaupload links? Can I download stuff off of there?

Yeah, megaupload/rapidshare works without any problems. You’ll be blocked by the dl cap though unless you do it during the unlimited time block. tr1p7s put all the dl cap info above.

Yeah, but the URL doesn’t work.

Google ucsb resnet. Click on the first link. Click Contact Resnet. Click Online Help Desk. Click Status.

Thanks UCSBpremed! Looks like I wont be having many problems with finding files if I can use RS and MU. Also do I get my own IP or do i share it with everyone on the network?

@tr1p7s

Once I click Online Help Desk, the page doesn’t load. Does it require a connection from the UCSB campus?
