ECs: A little bit of everything. Part-time student (20-30 hours weekly for the last 2.5 years)
- U.S. Navy veteran (2.5 years, General under Honorable discharge, no G.I. bill)
- Won two journalism competitions (one in high school, one in the U.S. Navy)
- Studied abroad in Spain and pursuing a Spanish professional certificate at UCSD Extension
- Presented a research poster regarding microaggressions in two research conferences at the community college level
- Volunteered to help a dyslexic 24-year old to learn literary English for one year
- Currently an activity leader at an extended-day after school program.
Personal Statement: I’ve been told it’s a very good personal statement, but I won’t know until the other four UCs give me their answer on admittance. Honestly, I told them how I was kicked out of the Navy for using drugs, but reinforced my awareness of my childhood environmental influences as well as my prior mistakes. I gave them a struggle story, saying something on the lines like, “Resiliency is my defining characteristic. What’s more beautiful, is the potential success of a man who had grown to believe he would fail.”
I do have a couple of F’s on my transcript, as well as five W’s, if that makes anybody feel better. I sold the point that I am engulfed in extracurriculars and part-time work in addition to my studies. I’m definitely not the most studious individual.
I’m maintaining positivity. I am totally not opposed to spending the next few years of my life in Santa Barbara.
