UCSB Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Hey so I had a question.
I got into UCSB as a biological science major and I already SIRed. Am i allowed to switch my major because I want to change it to biopsych. But i don’t know if i’m allowed to switch or not.
Thanks

The portal has a “change major” option. I don’t see any reason you wouldn’t be approved for that switch.

Careful though because if you change your mind you probably won’t be able to switch back. Most of the UC’s prohibit switching into biology after transferring.

@falltransfer1 yeah i saw that but it said you can only change your major before you SIR…
and I already SIRed.
It said if you SIR you have to wait 2 quarters till you can request a major change but does that apply for transfer students too? cause I’m only going to be there for 2 years so idk how I would finish all the upper div courses in that short amount of time.

@skk3600

I don’t believe anything prevents you from taking upper division classes once you start there, unless the particular class is impacted. You can take upper division classes in astrophysics, English, whatever you want.

In other words, not being able to change your major for two quarters will have little bearing on progress towards graduation, since you can just take psychobiology upper division classes right away.

Is there a Facebook page or something where transfers can meet potential roommates?

@Rayche17

The UCSB schools app though I haven’t been able to get my UCSB email verified for some reason. I know some of the people who got admitted the first day got an invite to it.

Was the invite sent through email? I have gotten my ucsb email verified but I don’t remember getting an invite.

@Rayche17

From what I remember reading when decision came it was sent to people emails. Though I got my decision in the last week.

@Rayche17
So I did a bit of searching in the internet and found that this is the person you email if you want an invitation to the facebook / schools app for UCSB. Only UCSB admitted students are able to join. Here is the email and don’t forget to include your perm number and information.

Keri.bradford@sa.ucsb.edu

Here is the reply I got

"Hi, BlackPlasma!

Thanks for writing, and congratulations on your acceptance to UCSB! I’ve just added your information to the app, and you should be receiving an invitation to join very shortly.

Congrats, again, and welcome to the Gaucho family!

Sincerely, Keri"

P.S. Obviously changed my real first name into my CC username in the intro lol.

Well that app is full of just freshman :confused:

Lol thanks for the email! I only heard about this app because my cousin was also admitted but she is going to be a freshman. They als

lol I also found out recently that I will have a distant cousin also going to UCSB.

After visiting UCLA’S Bruin Day, I decided UC Santa Barbara [IS] the place for me!!! I do not care at all for the other UCs that admitted me. haha. UCLA was the only other UC I was even slightly considering.
SEE YOU ALL IN THE FALL!

GauchoStrong!

edit: and thank you all for all the help/advice along the way! It was a great ride!

Hello all- we just went to UCSB Transfer Friday event. It was very well done. They packed a lot of great information into the day. Especially loved the Q/A panel with current transfer students. They all seemed like amazing people who you would love to have as friends, and they were very articulate and poised while answering all kinds of questions from the audience. Ditto for our tour guide. My son loves the school and overall vibe. The new library is gorgeous and has both ocean and mountain views on the higher floors.

One big shocker - In the Psych info session they said the Psych and Brain Science BS (which my son was admitted to as a pre-major) was an error by admissions, that it should have been either the BA Psych or the BS Biopsychology. So he has to request to change his major to one of those two. It was annoying that no one previously notified him of this and we just happened to go there to find this out. This transition is going to be happening eventually from the BA to the new BS but it doesn’t seem to being going very smoothly, judging by this.The thought of more “red tape” is not exciting.

Also, is anyone else a little freaked out by the housing situation for transfers at UCSB? They stated unequivocally that all transfers will be sharing a bedroom with one or possibly even two other students. I have trouble seeing my son or any older “non-traditional” transfer student doing that. Does anyone have any thoughts on that? The only other school he is seriously considering at this point is Davis, and the housing there is phenomenal (private bed/bath for the most part), but he didn’t like the campus (too hot) and felt there was nothing to do there. He just didn’t like the vibe or location. He grew up and we currently live near the coast in So cal, so I actually understand this. I suppose second year he may have some roommates and could rent a house in the community with his own bedroom possibly, but for now the shared bedroom idea is a bit of an issue.

Anyone else consider Davis? Just looking for any help or insight as he has not decided yet but is definitely leaning towards UCSB.

@wecandothis I suppose if academics are a tie, your son simply has to decide which con he’d rather live with, having roommates or the unfavorable weather/social scene for him at UCD. Personally I chose Davis but that’s because I’m a nontraditional student and married, so roommates aren’t really a good option. Davis also offers a cheaper cost of living. It’ll be weird for me going from LA and having the beach close by to moving to Davis, admittedly, but I didn’t feel like there was nothing to do there, plus they have a shuttle from Davis-Berkeley for $11 that runs 4 times a day that’ll give easy access to the bay area and the ocean, so that’s cool. I think even if unmarried, I would’ve chosen Davis tbh, but it’s a close call.

@ananguiano thank you for your feedback. I did not know about that shuttle- that is awesome! I will let him know about that. Wishing you the best at Davis, I can definitely understand your reasoning. It is only for 2 years too. He has a hard choice to make. A good problem to have though #-o

@wecandothis I’m like, five days late to the party. Anyway, I’m a non-trad student also–I’m 26 years old–and the e-mail they sent informing transfers that we’re all sharing a room was disappointing. However, there is the UCSB schools app for Android and iPhone that allows students to meet each other and find roommates with similar ages and interests. There are only a few students over the age of 24 on there, but it’s enough to give me hope that I won’t be the old lady of the group.

@hannahrenae Hi, I am applying to UCSB as a transfer and majoring in English as well. Do you think you could share what your EC’s were? Congrats on getting in!

I was accepted to ucsb but appealing to ucla. I went to ucsb for their reel loud film festival last friday and wow - a gorgeous campus. The vibe is amazing (very laid back), and they layout the school perfectly for cyclist like myself. The study spaces seem very modern and ideal for learning. I hear there is a lot of partying at ucsb, and it was confirmed when i encountered a student event that seemed to be “poppin off” lol. Anyway, i am 32 year old non trad undergrad transfer, likely the oldest student on campus at any given time. I have lived on my own and held a full-time job for a long time now, this housing situation and leaving my job is going to be challenge.

Does anybody know how registering for classes is gonna work? I’m trying to use GOLD to plan out my schedule but all the classes I need are filling p’full since we get the last pick
