UCSB Fall 2018 Transfer Thread (Including TAG)

@DanielLB They do though lol. It’s not only SB, but they do deny people who are overqualified for their programs because they know the applicant can get a better opportunity somewhere else. Or vice versa, lower GPA can get in because they believe he has the best opportunity at their program. I’ve been lurking in these types of threads for a while now, I’ve seen alot of people getting denied from lower tier UCs and get into higher tier UCs such as UCSD,UCLA, and UCB. I guarantee you he’ll get into UCB or UCLA with those stats

@DanielLB the full ride to SB definitely should have them at the forefront but that begs the question, what exactly are you trying to do with your Comm degree? Im also a Comm major and after looking over SBs coursework I didn’t see much that applied to my focus which is the entertainment industry/social activism.

I need to visit SB, and Davis. I applied to Berkeley for Media Studies but it’s mostly theory and I’m wondering if it will ultimately be a good fit. Plus I wonder about connections to the industry. I worry how connected it is, at least to San Francisco to get a foot in the door. I live in LA so if I get into UCLA I’m familiar with the culture already and already think the campus is pretty. I’m also certain there are pathways into the entertainment industry. Davis, I like the curriculum but worry about opportunities once I’m done.

I’m curious to know how you’ve ranked them. If I had to I would say USC (Annenberg), UCLA, Davis, Berkeley, SB.

Hey guys, i spoke to admissions today regarding transfers at the open house event. They’ll be releasing daily starting Monday! So keep checking your portals.

Thank you @cmor6317 . At least thats some good news because i honestly got tired of seeing my status pending. Will do :)>-

Exactly. I did not say all high stats students get rejected. However it is true some high school seniors with high stats got rejected by UCD and UCI and accepted by UCB.

I do see this in STEM majors a lot. STEM majors are more competitive than other majors.

Then some might say “I have 4.0 and got into UCSB as a STEM major”, yes it is generally the case. I am only saying I am surprised that someone with 4.0 still got rejected , that is all(same thing as a high school senior with 4.5 with near perfect SAT/ACT being rejected by mid -tier UCs).

I am also one of these “overqualified” applicants who was rejected. Or at least I hope I am. I really have my fingers crossed for Cal, which is why I was extra surprised when I wasn’t even waitlisted for UCSB. I consider Cal and UCLA reaches and I don’t think I fall in the range of a student “too good” for Santa Barbara. I was admitted to UCI for TAG but in hindsight I should’ve done UCSB.

Stats:
Major: Economics
GPA: 3.84
Credits: over 100 (quarter)
IGETC: done
ECs: Econ club VP, AKPsi co-chair, volunteered for a local non-profit creating a business plan, community service in prison…yada yada yada. A few other miscellaneous clubs, 4-5 odd jobs.
Essays: how do people judge this one objectively lol, I liked 'em

Just goes to show you can’t take anything for granted! Congratulations to those who got in.

@brookso73 it might also be because you are over in credits, if you are over 135 quarter units, or if you have lower grades in major pre-reqs or have one in progress.

ADMITTED FOR ECON!!

@Charlie117 was your decision posted just now?

YAH

ugh my decision has been pending for a good like week or so now…

@d4rkr4in i’m also pending. I spoke to admissions and they said all transfers should be posted by the end of this week. They don’t have many left.

Just an update on my previous post. I was accepted to UCSB for chemical engineering on the 4/13/18.

Background: I am 26 years old and have some bad academic history, took a few years off, but have had a clear upward trajectory in my past 4 years during which I have made up for my past errors and completed all possible recommended prep courses, which I made a point of in my essays. Ended up with a 3.66 gpa at cc (3.9 if you discount the first two years that were filled with ds fs and ws). IGETC completed also. I am also getting 8 associates degrees. I have gotten into UCSC and uci as well, but still waiting on ucb, UCLA, UCSD, and ucd.

Also, not my story, but a friend with a 3.74 just got into the same major without completing the Matlab course.

ADMITTED for political science from UC Riverside!

GPA: 3.45 with a huge upward trend (I switched majors)
I’m still waiting on UCLA and UCB but i’m not really expecting to get into either of those

waitlisted

sociology
gpa: 2.89

Was pretty surprised considering my low gpa, happy to still have a chance!

admitted! got in as math, gpa on the low side at 3.44. Hopefully, its good news from UCSD or UCLA, but happy with UCSB

Hey guys! Quick question. I am a Computer Science major and I am taking a course called Calculus 1D. Basically in my college there is Calculus 1A, 1B and 1C which is Calculus 1,2,3. I took those and did very well. Calculus 1D is basically an advanced version of 1,2 and 3 and can fulfill credit for a class I will probably have had to take at the University. Basically, none of the UC’s I realistically can get in to (I have a 3.7) REQUIRE that 1D course. It’s just recommended to speed things up when I transfer. So it’s a major prerequisite, but a recommended one. I have the rest of the prerequisites completed. If at a very worst case scenario I withdraw from this class with a W, will I get rescinded?

Thanks!

@brookso73 you should really call and find out what’s up. Maybe you’re missing units. Is anything out of sequence that would lose you units?

@AyGrey I called for a similar question, the class in question for me was Physics. It wasn’t 100% needed but but recommended. I failed the first test, got anxiety and wanted to drop it. I called them and they said it wouldn’t effect my admission status because I had completed the required classes and had over 60 units.

However they did say it might make me less competitive as an applicant, but I had UCSB as a TAG. From my experience, UCSB has the nicest admissions office. I called them a few times, they answered all my questions respectfully and fairly quickly each time. So you should just call their office and ask, it’ll save you the anxiety.

Waitlisted for Computer Science or Computer Engineering
