UCSB Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

I think my admissions decisions will be later rather than sooner because I’m currently studying abroad in South Korea and only today did I get an email saying I had to submit transcripts from my school here in 5 days or have my application canceled :frowning:

@Ohm888

That is true.

@npound @IBkidonthestreet I’m sure it will all work out no matter what…but I’m 18 and looking to find housing so if anyone is interested in starting up a transfer housing thread or something, definitely lmk :smile:

@“Comm.ingforU” I’m also 18 and am looking for housing.

@hoppy1
Thanks for responding! I actually finished all the major requirements for ucsb and I have almost 70 transferrable credits but still dont know what went wrong. Ill probably call ucsb later

@lizzyyykkk

Let us know what UCSB says about your application.
Good luck!

For 2018, the acceptance rate was 57% and GPA range was
3.35-3.83 for Economics.

@hoppy1 let it be known that the 3.35-3.83 GPA range for economics only highlights the middle 25th to 75th percentile, and that outliers may occur on either end. That also doesn’t take into consideration the enroll GPA, which was 3.22-3.66 (also the 25th to 75th percentile).

A general question about the wave system: why are they doing this? Why not tell the people they plan to reject that they got rejected? Unless they are looking for room to fit those people in before they decide to reject them completely? It really makes no sense, and just heightens anxiety for people who are waiting since the packets came in the mail yesterday for those who were accepted.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting, as I am too, and I hope you find a way to distract yourself until the next wave.

@acceptmeplsssss

I am well aware what you are saying and me listing the stats does not guarantee
anyone’s acceptance.

I just mentioned it as a reference especially because UCSB is well known
for not reading the applicants’ essays and putting more weight on their stats.

I forgot to mention I was on the Dean’s list for all terms until now on my app. Is it too late to tell them?

@KeepItCool
I’d say its too late, but it wouldn’t change anything anyways.

anyone TAG WHO STILL HAS NOT HEARD BACK YET??

Universities will gauge a student on various factors. I don’t think it’s particularly fair or reasonable to say that a University disregards essays and focuses primarily on grades. Many people look at these threads when they get anxious-- throwing out rumors without any merit is silly.

Unfortunately the UCs (esp top tier) focus on grades. That’s not to say a holistic approach is not used or that a compelling situation in an essay won’t bring someone into the fold. You always want to aim for the competitive GPA range as @hoppy1 noted. The bottom 25% is often the TAG folks, the athletes, or those with an educational or life circumstance.

@lizzyyykkk something is off somewhere. So I am thinking this: do you have AP exam credit? If so, you may have assumed an AP Econ score allowed you to skip an Econ course (it doesn’t) or there is a duplication of credit with an AP exam and a course. This means either UCSB saw a major req not fulfilled or you have less units than you calculated.

If it is not the above, it is definitely a conundrum.

@Ohm888

Thank you for clarifying what I wanted to say!
As English is my second language, sometimes it is hard for me
to explain things…

@hoppy1 I understood what you were saying. You said it fine.?

@lizzyyykkk another possibility: for TAG you need both English and math done by fall or you’re out. In the past, at least when I applied, UCSB wanted to see a math course with a letter grade by fall for ALL applicants, even if it was a remedial course, such as Int Algebra. If you were taking stats in spring with no other math letter grade in the transcript (P/NP did not count), that would be cause not to admit at UCSB. They may have changed this policy, but it definitely used to exist, just at UCSB.

@Ohm888 I got into UCSB, but decided not to go.

@Ohm888
Wait i got Macroecon exempt because i got a 4 on the ap test so i didnt have to take it during cc. Is that going to affect my other college decisions?? Or just the ucsb tag?? I asked my counselors and they all said that having econ expemt wouldnt affect me though

Econ at UCSB does not accept AP for Econ course. It says so in the top of the assist page. The AP Econ fulfills IGETC only. Each Econ major will have its own rules re that. Where else did you apply?

I suggest you appeal and note your advisor said it was fine and you’ll take in summer. Throw yourself at their mercy. Seriously.

@Ohm888
Omg im so nervous noww. But i applied to ucla, uc berkeley, uci, ucsd, ucsb, and ucr.
