If anything the UCs will be going deep into their out of state/international waitlists. They need the out of state tuition, which is triple that of in-state. With the loss of revenue this year–just from not having students on campus–plus the likely shortfall from California’s budget deficit, every UC will be taking as many out of state/international students as permitted. I believe each UC except San Diego, Irvine, Berkeley and UCLA is permitted a max of 18%. UCSD can admit more, perhaps in the 25% range. With an expected significant drop in international enrollment, I would think they want as many out of state as possible.
Thanks for the advice again. Is nice to hear from someone’s perspective who happens to work for both schools Honestly I haven’t done much schools research but from what I hear from friends/family they put UCSD definitely at a higher tier than UCSB as they classify UCSB as the same level as UCR. I told them it depends on the major…Of course what other family members say some kids do get influenced or take that into consideration… and at the current situation and not able to go visit the campuses is quite tough. I just have to keep telling him just based it off from his feelings and own research. Just curious did ur daughter get accepted to UCI? My son says he is surprised UCI didn’t accept him but UCSB did. According to him UCSB is a better school than UCI which I am not sure if that’s true.
“but from what I hear from friends/family they put UCSD definitely at a higher tier than UCSB as they classify UCSB as the same level as UCR.”
Seriously? The middle tier of UCs is generally considered UCSD, UCSB, UCI and UC Davis. The single most cited “ranking” is US News and World Report, which actually has UCSB the highest of the four. And quite honestly, UCSB is perhaps one of the most beautiful campuses among all of the UCs and almost perfect weather. The rub on UCSB was always the “party school” reputation, but I believe that has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. If you want partying, you can find it, you want academics, you can find it at UCSB or any school for that matter.
UCSB is definitely a top UC, especially for engineering, its below UCSD I believe, but still a top UC, definitely above UCR
2020 US News and World Report National Universities ranking:
20 UCLA
22 UCB
34 UCSB
36 UCI
37 UCSD
39 UCD
84 UCSC
91 UCR
104 UCM
As you can see UCSB is 3rd top UC and UCR is second to the last.
though US news rankings hardly mean anything, it is widely believed that UCSD UCSB and UCI are on the same level, right under UCLA and UCB
@MikeS1234 What are your stats? I too am waitlisted for MS.
@GJPK20 Could you please share your stats?
Got off the waitlist on May 13th! I am currently enrolled as a biochem major at Muir.
UW GPA: 3.85
W GPA: 4.63
ACT: 31
I also had a lot of extracurriculars and I thought my essays were decent.
Has anyone who’s gotten off the waitlist are out of state? I feel like I’ve only seen in-states.
I saw a couple oos on reddit, and on the fb group
@norcalparent It is widely known that US news and World has biased reporting when ranking the colleges within the US. The best way to truly know a schools rank is to use the US News and World Global Report where there is a more strict and non-bias reporting. The factors that go into it are actually legitimate rather than the level of prestige of the school. I encourage you to look at that one.
From what I hear and know the true levels of UC are as follows:
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
UC Irvine
UCSB
UC Davis
UC Santa Cruz
UC Riverside
UC Merced
Is there going to be another wave?
Yes I actually got of the waitlist & am oos. But I’m fairly close to California (Nevada).
@mei0603 - My daughter didn’t like UCI, so she didn’t apply. It’s funny that friends/family have such strong opinions about schools without any information except for “reputation”. UCSB was not super strong 30 years ago, but it has quickly emerged as a top school in the nation. The UC’s have ad-hoc tiers - Tier 1: Cal & UCLA, Tier 2: UCSB, Davis, UCSD and Irvine, Tier 3: Riverside and Santa Cruz, Tier 4: Merced. The thing about the UC’s is that they are all collaborative and a mutual respect no matter what UC you belong to. Your student could end up working on a research project with multiple UC’s involved. I am an academic research director at a UC, which has nothing to do with my daughter’s chances to get into any school, nor do I get a discount. The only benefit is that I get free parking at any UC and sometimes a good hotel deal near a UC campus.
I’m so glad you posted this (I swear, if I hear one more U.S. News ranking number). My husband went to Berkeley (“Big Law”). I went to UCSB as first-gen to college (Doc program interview tomorrow for clinical psychology). My son just got accepted by appeal to UCSB. When I went, it wasn’t nearly as hard to get into but was definitely rigorous to get through. I have a BFF who went to UCSC (lawyer turned tech executive) and San Diego (neuropsychologist who assists brain surgeries). So many more examples like this. Honestly, after you graduate, the UC part is all that matters - not the city. I have two graduate degrees from private universities and can safely say UC people in my classes stand out. They can bang out clean research papers, offer deep analysis in discussions, need less hand-holding, never complain about the reading or work required (I was shocked by these weaknesses in full-grown adult graduate students). No one cares if you fail on a campus of 30k … it’s sink or swim. They don’t hand out A’s and there’s no “study week” off for final exams. I’d say the only difference is each UC has its own vibe and local color.
For the people that got off of the waitlist, did you get an email that helps you set up your ucsd email? Because I have not received anything about it and I have to activate in order to register for the mandatory live orientation.
Will there be another wave this week?
I received an email to the triton checklist two days after committing that allowed me to set up my email. The link to set up the email also took two days after I for the checklist email, so it’s a little bit of a wait
@krispey Most likely there will be a wave this week. I’m praying still
