Hey so i was waitlisted at UCSD and I was just wondering if anyone knew how they take people off the waitlist? Is it by major because i applied for math-cs. And do stats count as well or is it like a lottery system. They also give out undeclared majors, which in all honestly i’d be perfectly happy taking. Thanks!
@phatdoggo Yes, your major does matter in getting off the waitlist. Once institutional priorities are fulfilled, admissions defaults to random selection. As per the waitlist page, the admissions readers have finished reviewing your application at the time and will not be re-reviewing applications due to the large amount of applications received. Keep in mind some smaller schools do re-review applications though.
@repaihe23r1ivers where is your evidence that it is a lottery system? a lot of factors go into getting off the waitlist, including but not limited to region, ethnicity, fit, major (as you said), etc. in order to do, they will HAVE to review your application once more. it’s definitely not as random as a lottery system. can anyone else confirm?
@froggiewaitlist I apologize, I might have recalled the “lottery” system from an unreliable source. I will verify whether I got this information from a reputable source.
@repaihe23r1ivers ofc, it’s no problem. there is so much conflicting information everywhere about UC waitlists online so i don’t blame you. i think what you are referring to in the lottery system is the way UCSD deals with waitlists in their school courses. for example, a student waitlisted to a computer science class will be accepted into the class via a lottery system.
My son was just accepted off the UCSB waitlist. Now let’s hope the other UCs follow suit and aren’t far behind. It is my hope that all waitlists are released before May 1st so that you can make educated decisions on where you will attend. Thus opening doors for others. Good luck! UCSD is my alma mater and it just keeps getting better and better.
Go Tritons. (I’m a UCSD alum too.) My son applied as an AeroEng major and is wait listed. Is it accurate that admission as an undeclared major might be offered for applicants to specific majors?
@clairebunny23 I did get an email at 4:44PM for a status change. Logged into my portal and was shown an offer of admission that I have to reply to by May 5
