@Onodera Depending on what ucb says on friday, I’ll probably see you at Davis.
@maatouk don’t lose hope, UCSD engineering is pretty tough to get into, almost similar to UCLA engineering, you’re still competitive for UCLA!
@brpere1175 My alternative major was Int. Economics and I got in econ which was my first option
Accepted | Economics
3.89 GPA | 4.0 Major GPA
I think my essays were decent, nothing special. My ECs were kinda mediocre if you ask me. I also had 2 W’s in Calc 1 due to a poor family situation during my first two semesters (I elaborated on this in my essays/comment area thingy). Ended up acing both it and Calc 2 though…
Wondering what their admission criteria was since people both above me and below me seem to have gotten denied
I was rejected for English. But I am not really that upset because my gpa wasn’t competitive because I switched schools/majors and still managed to finish in two years. I actually want to go to UCSC which I still haven’t heard from. I hope I get in there.
Got rejected. Aerospace major. I probably will go to either UCSB (physics major) or UCI (mechanical engineering). Don’t know which one is better for me tho. Department in Physics from UCSB has higher ranking but more interships around UCI.
To all who were rejected today, I am so sorry. Going through these posts was painful and I have no idea how you were turned down. You are all amazing students. I imagine you’re even more in shock than I am, but please don’t let this rejection get to you. If you’re waiting on Cal/UCLA, don’t lose confidence (you’re all so qualified!) and keep in mind that a rejection from a tier two doesn’t equal a rejection from a tier one (my friend is living proof - accepted to Cal, rejected from UCSD), and if this rejection made your SIR decision easier, consider yourselves lucky! Love your new school, be proud of what you have accomplished, and keep on being your wonderful selves. I wish you all luck.
I’ve been peaking at this thread every now and then for about a week now. From the looks of it, majors such as CS have become insanely competetive. It just goes to show no one, no matter how competitive your gpa appears to be, can feel “safe.” Assuming many individuals all applied with strong gpas, the admissions decisions were not dependent on just academics. It just came down to who they felt had the most strong application overaaaalll. What sets you apart from the others? What do you have to offer the campus? Were you as personal as you could’ve been in the personal statements? If you mentioned past struggles, did you make sure to focus on how you OVERCAME those struggles? How was your wording in your personal statements? Did you try to make a connection with the readers - try to make them understand what makes you YOU rather than just the academic side of you. Did you fill up alll if not asss maaaannnnyy sections as you could when it came to the ECs etc? It’s important to remember its PEOPLE that look over these applications. There isn’t necessarily just a simple formula used to determine admissions. Many of you had extremely high gpas that go to show you guys are determined, have strong work ethic etc. UCSD may have denied you, but another school will accept you. The reason behind it may be confusing (for ex why did i get denied from sdsu yet accepted to ucsd??). At the end of the day, no matter what school you go to, you have the ability to be successful. Good luck every one!
wow i guess the CS pool was really large this year
Hey guys - here’s a theory. UCSD is trying to possibly protect its yield (the number of students who actually enroll after getting an acceptance). It majorly affects ranking. Is it possible they think you’re likely to get accepted to UCLA or Berkeley and ditch SD? Hence, they’re cutting their losses. There’s a lot written about universities doing this to protect yield. Google it.
Accepted last week
Major: Law and Society
GPA: 3.7 + all completed prerequisites
Major GPA: 4.00
Local: No
Applied: UCR, UCSD, UCSB, UCI, UCLA, UCB, Cal Poly Pomona, CSUN, CSULB, SDSU
Accepted: UCR, UCSD, UCSB, UCSD, CSUN, CSULB, Cal Poly Pomona
Denied: SDSU
Pending: UCLA and UCB
Rejected for Hum. Bio but I think it’s because I am missing two pre reqs
Already SIRed to my first choice, UCI though
Best of luck to anyone still waiting!
Rejected Today
Major: CS
GPA: 3.87
Major GPA: 4.0
EC’s: President of Engineering and Technology club
President of SHPE
Vice President of PTK honor society
Treasurer for AGS honor society
Worked part time as an academic tutor (math and computer science)
Senator for Student government
Essays: I thought they were good, I spoke about the projects that my club and I did (working with the Arduino and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers) because I thought that it was pertinent to my major. I’m not the best at writing essays, but I had a former UC Berkeley engineering admin read my essays and she said they were good. I would say 8/10.
Accepted: UCI
Pending: UCLA and UCB
I’m from the Bay area, so I really want to get into UC Berkeley; I also did TAP for UC Berkeley so hopefully it works out! It was just really disappointing seeing this rejection today. Maybe they weren’t looking for any CS majors? lol
@Ohm888 I hope that is what UCSD is doing, b/c I applied think I am a shoe in, considering econ at SD had a 55% acceptance rate last year.
@futureanteater97 what pre-reqs were you missing?
Received my status once I arrived in Hawaii last Friday to attend something. To not throw you guys off because of my stats, I’m a California CC student.
Accepted! Got into my intended major and first choice college (Sixth College)
Major: Visual Arts - Media
GPA: 3.42
Pre-reqs: Finished after this semester
ECs: Publications (high school), part time caregiver, volunteer painter on MLK day, active in church activities
Essays: I wrote whatever was on my mind and I didn’t have it reviewed by anyone so I was a bit worried about it. I briefly talked about my time doing my community service and publications back in high school.
Accepted: UCR, UCI
Pending: UCLA, Loyola Marymount University
I honestly can’t believe I got accepted, I teared lol. Good luck everyone!
@KevinTruongCS it’s weird that you was rejected. I really don’t know what the CSE department is doing
Confusing af ;___;
@blackonyx yes, I will be dropping by the transfer center to see what advice they have. Thanks for the tip
Yea computer science at SD is really impacted, it already has the one of the largest cs department in the country, and they’re trying to limit growth. They switched to a lottery system for inter major transfer next year but for now they still have to let those who got 4.0 in within UCSD first, and this quarter around 90 got in, and they expect even more for summer. So once that’s all dealt with, there are very few spots open for transfers from CCC and other universities, which kinda sucks, as CS will be much easier to get into next year as they would have switched to a lottery system and thus can limit their enrollment. Econ also got impacted this year, (along with a few other majors like most engineering, biology, Math etc.), and my guess is as they try and sort this out they have to limit transfers unfortunately.
@Ohm888 I doubt that they’re doing yield protections as rankings don’t care about transfer admissions, the data they use is for freshman admissions. And in addition to that, no major rankings service (US NEWS, THE etc.) uses yield rates in their methodology anyway.
I got admitted a few days ago!
Major- earth sciences
gpa- 3.18
college- revelle
igetc- almost
major prep- missing 2 classes (bio and dvq)
ec- Ive done a lot of volunteer work, clubs, work and sports, both in h.s. and college. I think my essays helped me as my gpa is rather low.
Yeeewwwwwwwww!!!
