@lenocturne Why use a strawman argument like that? I am also in community college working on an engineering degree and my alternate would no way in hell be philosophy. If you were in something like mechanical engineering then physics is a very reasonable alternate. It isn’t capped (actually it will be for 2018) and is closely related, meaning you have a higher chance of switching majors since the requirements overlap.
There are still many other reasonable alternates you can chose to improve your chances of being admitted. If you choose 2 majors that are both capped, it greatly reduces your chances.
For example, if you didn’t get accepted for mechanical engineering, what makes you think you’d get accepted for aerospace engineering?
3.9 gpa
Major: Physiology and Neuroscience
Finished all Prerequisites
I feel like the 2 capped majors screwed me over. I’m gonna call tomorrow and ask for more details so I can at least try an appeal…
@itskelvinn, “philosophy” is obviously an overexaggeration on my part. I do not disagree with you - in some cases it might make sense, but not for a CS/engineering major. All majors within the Jacobs school of engineering are capped, and I do not see any “reasonable” alternatives outside the school. It can be close to a real thing, but it’s just not it. Last year, when I was accepted as undeclared, admissions advised that I take on Math-CS, instead of my desired CS. I considered it to some extent, did some research and soon realized that it is stupid to declare a major I would hate at the school that I would love. In the end, for me it boils down to what you want to study, not where. I was accepted to some other UCs for pure CS. I didn’t go (it’s a long story), but when reapplying this year, I specifically chose 2 majors (capped or not) that I would love at every campus. I think with relatively high gpa (I consider 3.7-3.8 decent for engineering), I’ll be able to get in somewhere, and I’d rather be studying a “capped” major I want at Davis, than something “non-capped and close” at UCSD. For me, it’s not where you go, it’s what you make of it.
I updated my application mid March removing one UCSD prereq (chem) which I had to withdraw. Would the school have taken that update into consideration when they gave me admission? Apparently I am also missing another prereq (Java programming) per assist.org which wasn’t in my app to begin with.
Sent an email via the portal and no response yet. Would they just let me finish missing prereqs in fall or can they reject the SIR?
Note: I was denied to UCSD even though i am signed up for University Link since Spring of 2014 (they give you 4 years to transfer). Has anybody been or heard of a similar situation? Did they misplace my paperwork? I know Ulink doesnt guarantee major acceptance but it does guarantee school acceptance, however I was denied to major and school. HELP !
Complete a minimum of 60 UC-transferable semester units (90 quarter units) by end of spring term prior to fall enrollment at UC San Diego.
Earn a cumulative 3.5 UC GPA by the end of fall term prior to fall enrollment at UC San Diego, and maintain a 3.5 UC GPA through the end of spring term prior to fall enrollment at UC San Diego.
Apply to UC San Diego no later than 3 years from the time of beginning your studies at a local partner community college
@mechengMCC I graduated from MiraCosta in December, and am familiar with the program as I am a vetetan. I was accepted in March. I have a 3.73 gpa, and nothing i have received from UCSD mentions me being in the ULink program.
Had you any contact with the ULink office during the application period? Considering you were accepted to UCSB your application and TAU were completed properly.
Contact Timothy Borch at UCSD as he heads the ULink program.
@ald6191 Congrats on being accepted! What major did you apply and get in for? I have not had any contact with the UCSD Ulink office but i will try to get ahold of Timothy ASAP. Thank you for your help!
@mechengMCC
I should clarify that I did enroll in the ULINK program in 2014 and completed 60 units by December 2016.
I was accepted as a Poli Sci/Public Policy Major to 6th College.
MiraCosta has a good transfer office, I hope they can assist you! Dr. Flocken really knows the ins and outs.
@mechengMCC
From the ULink website: It is strongly recommended that you select an alternate major on the UC Application, and that your alternate major not be capped. If you are not admitted to a capped major, you may be admitted to your alternate uncapped major. If you are not admitted into a capped major and you have not selected an alternate major that is uncapped, you will not be admitted to the university.
Also, you have a 3.4 GPA. The cut off GPA is a 3.5. There would be no point trying to contact the school.
I should note that I am a transfer student from UCR so my GPA is a UC gpa and also that I did not complete many requirements but maybe they gave me leeway since I was working towards a different program at UCR.
