@tbpark103 Yes. You are required to attend an orientation (this is different than transfer triton day).
ACCEPTED
Major: Political Science - International Relations
3.68 GPA
IGETC and major prep done by Spring
Congrats everyone!
@amshamim Congrats! My major is Public Policy. Did you just find out? What college were you placed?
Anybody get a regents invitation in the mail? Seems that regents were sent out on monday. You can check by going the the financial aid estimate on the UCSD acceptance site.
I have a possible UCSD grant amount. Not sure if that is Regents, nothing in mail yet.
Sorta kinda dying to get the admit packet in the mail. Do you know how long it takes to receive it? (I am local)
@blackonyx The packet states it was sent on Monday. However, my brother just picked it up in the mail an hour ago. We live in SoCal.
@108Degrees I scrolled to the bottom of the page where it says “contact us” if you have questions. I selected the admission status inquiries subject line. They got back to me in one day! It really took a load off my shoulders.
@JohnMacintosh Thanks! I hope I get it soon
Do you all think UCSD will really be able to compete with UCLA in a few years time? I’ve heard that that’s what they’re trying to.
compete in what way? UCLA is almost 100 years old, and UCSD is 50. As it relates to bio research and computer science I would think UCSD is on par with UCLA.
@UCLAorUCBTRNSFR humbly disagree. Yield is huge.
Example:
1000 eligible applicants for admission. Admissions feels fairly optimistic about 70%, kind of thinking the other 30% are high risk and might bail.
So (A) you throw caution to the wind and admit all and have a 60% enroll rate.
Or (B) you defer the questionable group to a waitlist or outright don’t admit. Then with the remaining surer-bet they get a 77% enroll rate.
They’d be fools not to take that under consideration.
And stats have shown the longer someone holds out on a waitlist the more likely it is they will enroll (almost 100%). It’s a strategy that’s been covered in NYT and US News, among others. If you notice the UC waitlists have grown astronomically bigger theses last few years, or been started when they used to not have them. Coincidence? Maybe.
UCSD has been gunning hard to be in the top tier. Started when they got rid of TAG. If you look at admittance vs enroll rate, it drops as you work down the UCs. No UC wants to be seen as a safety.
So, if I were admissions at a UC under Berkeley and UCLA, I’d be acutely aware of yield. Just my personal opinion.
Just found this that shows UC enroll rates. I can imagine the middle tier working to improve those numbers any way they can. (Again, simply my hunch.)

Can someone please answer my question… I’m feeling hopeless. UCSD is my last option and I’ve been accepted for the Econ Major which requires calculus A and B, however due to unfortunate circumstances, I had to drop Calc B mid way through the semester. UCSD Admissions is not answering their phones or responding to my emails… how can I get through to them? I want to know if I can complete this course over the summer before choosing to attend UCSD in Fall 2017. Am I capable of doing this? Do I have any options, because I would like to accept admission. Will they revoke my admission?? Can someone please give me a response based on what they know to be true. Thank you!
@ohm888 it would also be interesting to find out how many “empty” seats these universities ended up with. The fact that they are making calculated assumptions as to who if offered will actually accept (considering even Berkeley doesn’t have a 100% yield) admission seems to infer some level of contact with applicants would serve all involved well.
Case in point that I am disappointed in UCSD as I attended a Transfer Tour a few weeks ago, which was for early admits. I have yet to receive a follow up email or phone call to determine if I am going to SIR. Are they assuming they put on enough of a dog and pony show to convince me? Not really. Who doesn’t want to feel “desired”? These schools act like they are the hot girl every guy wants despite their stuck up personality. The good girls that will treat you well, but are not as “hot” sit at home wishing someone would ask them out!
The hot girl would rather be alone as opposed to going out with someone “beneath” her, and the not hot girl would say yes immediately to almost anyone that shows an interest in her.
@ald6191 it will be interesting to see what shakes down with the waitlist. I’m sorry about your UCSD experience. UCLA and Berkeley both calll to try and convince people to SIR. I never thought about it before but maybe it’s simply to protect the yield. lol.
I will say tours, in my experience, are highly disorganized, and often sub-contracted to others. That might be your issue.
@mattkarzi send them an email. Everything I’ve heard is that UCSD is more easy-going with missing pre-req compared to some of the UCs. Obviously, only they can give you the answer, but stay optimistic.
Can someone pleaseeeeee respond to my comment
@Ohm888 what is so funny is that one of the mucky muks in the transfer department knows my ex wife, and my oldest daughter from when she worked at SDSU. The tour was manned by transfer center staff. I have also been bombarded by UCR with transfer scholarship applications, honors invites and a relatively more “we really want you” vibe than UCSD. We are ultimately customers of the Universities as well as their funders as California tax payers!
It is almost like putting in an application to buy an expensive car, and you are willing to pay full price for it, but the car seller decides who they want to sell to and attempt to explain they have some sort of fair vetting process.
The same way that Ferrari would probably love to sell more cars, they also don’t want the market diluted by selling too many, and to the “wrong” people.
@mattkarzi if the class is major prep they may require you take it at UCSD. I am somewhat in the same boat, as I have a major prep for Political Science that I was not able to work into my schedule this semester. I already have 60 units, and IGETC, so all this would do is satisfy the lower division pre requisites. I will ask them if I can take the class at my community college after I accept their offer of admission. I did have UCSD students in my Bio 101 class at my community college, but they were taking it to satisfy their general education requirements, not major prep.
Hope this helps!
I don’t mind taking it at UCSD. I’m worried that they’ll revoke my admission and not offer it to me anymore. I don’t mind taking it there, but it would be easier to take it over the summer and then begin at UCSD and finish Calc C in order for me to begin with my upper division core classes. Do I have any chance? And how should I contact them? They’re not responding via phone or email!
@mattkarzi I have no idea Keep calling, or go visit maybe. Best of luck.
@ald6191 I’m not even sure, I’ve just been hearing people say they’re trying to “compete”. Rankings or competitiveness maybe. They got a huge grant from alumni and I know they’re using some of that to build a trolley to downtown San Diego.
