UCSD Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

I was waitlisted for Human Biology. It’s odd to me that I’ve only seen one or two Human Bio majors here. We had quite a sample of applicants here in this thread…

Did anyone get the Regents Scholarship?

Hey guys, I have a question.

I got into UCSD’s International Business without completing Calculus 2 (I finished Business Calculus covering Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 materials) and the second English course. I am pretty sure this is not a mistake because UCSD reviewed all my academic record including my Spring 2019 class schedule before they made a decision.

UCSD’s acceptance contract states that:

Complete all UC minimum subject requirements by the end of Spring term 2019, including two UC-transferable English composition courses; one UC-transferable math concepts and quantitative reasoning course; four UC-transferable courses chosen from at least two of the following areas: arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences.

However, my Spring semester is over and my final grades are posted. I didn’t complete the second English and Calculus 2. They didn’t ask me to complete it/them in summer as well so I am a bit confused. Does it mean that they allowed me to complete all the missing prereqs after I enroll UCSD in Fall ( if I choose to attend)?

Also, I am wondering if emailing UCSD’s admission asking about this situation will negatively affect my acceptance letter?

Posting stats for future reference
Accepted!
Major: Cognitive and behavioral neuroscience
IGETC: Done by end of spring
Major requirements: Last calculus class done by end of summer
GPA: 3.56 (3.9 major GPA)
About 13 W’s for reasons explained in my application.

@sagaciousforever it shouldn’t be a problem at all. One of my friends also got into Cal without completing pre requisites for her major & several sources including admissions officials at Berkeley told her that as long as she applied without reporting she would take those classes & her major wasn’t impacted, they knowingly accepted you with your current academic status so it’s expected that you’ll take those lower division courses there as a transfer (but obviously, this wouldn’t be the case for Haas applicants). I don’t see why San Diego would have it any different

Accepted!

Major: Communications
GPA: 3.6
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Done
EC: Student Government, Marketing officer for fashion club, PTK member, tons of volunteering, etc.
Applied: UCLA, UCB, UCSB, UCSD, SDSU, Cal Poly Slo
Accepted: UCSB, UCSD

@mathislife So this means that I could take the missing prereqs in Fall at UCSD (if I choose to attend)?

There is no need to take it/them during the summer?

Thank you for your reply because this bothers me a bit. I am planning to email the admission office to confirm again. Do you think that emailing them regarding "missing prereqs but still got accepted"could hurt my admission?

@gonnatranser too funny

@sagaciousforever absolutely do NOT take it over summer! What the Berkeley admissions officer said was that (insofar as she, my friend, wasn’t a Haas student since that’s business school specifically is super competitive,) since she didn’t report she was taking it over spring (it would have been bad if she reported taking the pre reqs & didn’t), it would not be uncommon of her to still take 1-2 courses as a transfer. It works a bit different in Berkeley since you are only admitted to a certain college & not your major yet. They require you to first finish the entire lower division courses before declaring your major/upper division status.
On the other hand, UCSD accepts you AS your major, even explicitly stating your major in the acceptance letter (Berkeley doesn’t do this) so I don’t see why it wouldn’t also apply to you as a UCSD prospective student.
If you would like to double check though, you should contact admissions. But I’m positive you’re fine. Many transfer students take lower divs after transferring. It’s just much more ideal to have them finished & more competitive when applying.

Are we able to appeal if we are waitlisted?

@ucdochopeful2k19 Wth, I’m honestly so surprised you were rejected! Yes, definitely call and ask if they can reveal what it was. Maybe you can appeal. Global health isn’t even a popular major…

Regardless, you will have a chance at medical school graduating from any of the UCs if you can manage to build up your resume.

@KeepItCool Not according to this: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/q-and-a/waitlist/index.html

Also the FAQ’s on the application portal indicate no appeals to get on to the waitlist or to appeal if you are on the waitlist. It seems as though appeals are only for those who were explicitly rejected and have compelling (and new) information that would take them from “rejected” to “admitted” (no waitlist in between). However, take heart, as it would seem you have a much greater chance of getting accepted from the waitlist, rather then acceptance by appeal.

Some UC waitlists have the option to craft a “waitlist statement” or to appeal whilst on the waitlist (I think this is the case for UCSB), but not for UCSD.

@sagaciousforever @mathislife no offense but you ppl are way off base. People ask to take summer courses at a CCC all the time, to finish IGETC, to prepare for another subject, to get a pre-req out of the way, and yes some even are allowed to take a missing course that might otherwise get them rescinded — if the UC is feeling generous. Summer courses are sometimes added to the provisional. They don’t care if you take courses in the summer before admission. I did it to get one out of the way. **The key is to get permission. **

The provisional clearly says both English need to be completed by spring. This year, I swear, everyone seems to disregard everything the UC says. The provisional doesn’t say oh just forget about it and take when you get here. People get rescinded all the time. I suggest you contact the UC, bring up the obvious problem that is in violation of the provisional, offer to take in summer and let them tell you what to do, or you can take the other suggestion and do nothing. I don’t know why you always ask my opinion as you disagree with it every single time. ???

Waitlist Transfer thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/2140697-ucsd-waitlist-fall-2019-transfer-p2.html

Accepted!

Major: Visual Arts (Media)
3rd year transfer from a California CC
College: Sixth (was my 2nd choice, 1st choice was Muir )-
GPA: 3.9
IGETC: completed
TAG: no
Applied: UCSC, UCLA, UCSB, UCSD (every other school applied to Film major except for UCSD)
Accepted: UCSC, UCSB, UCSD
Denied: UCLA

Also, additional question: i know this is a general transfer thread for all majors, but if anyone happens to have any insight on whether or not I should go with film & digital media at UCSC or visual arts media at UCSD, please let me know!!! really struggling to decide between the two(already decided to opt out on UCSB). I kind of am more attracted to UCSD’s art program overall, but find the stereotypes of their dead social life a bit worrisome, as connections are super important in the art world so because of that, i’m leaning more towards UCSC, but please, if someone knows any more info, let me know!! thanks!

@Ohm888

Going off of your most recent reply about taking summer courses…what would you suggest for someone that has achieved 66 UC transferrable credits as of Fall 2018, has completed all IGETC areas as of Fall 2018, and is currently taking 14 UC transferrable credits this Spring, of which only 3 credits are required to finish major prep for UCSD…but is failing 8/14 credits. The 3 credit major prep course I will most likely ace, as well as another 3 credit communications class (required for CSU). The other two classes are a random 5 credit course for Arabic, and a random 3 credit philosophy course I took. So I get A’s or B’s in two classes and F’s in two classes. Not sure if this matters either (but I know they can see it on my application), but I’m taking these courses at 3 different colleges, just like I did last Fall. I probably spend more time on commuting then I do on homework haha.

I’m a veteran and I used the other courses as “fillers” so that I could receive full time financial aid (but they don’t know that, which sucks big time). My logic is that they’ll see someone who will have 72 UC transferrable credits (I think 70 is the max they’ll accept right?) by the end of Spring…and they’ll see that I focused on the courses I NEEDED to do well in for my major. I don’t like failing classes, but at some point you’ve got to prioritize…and I feel as if I put a mass amount of effort in my failing classes at this point in the game, then that would undoubtedly take away from effort put into my needed courses during this “final push”. Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

Hi everyone, in case you haven’t see the new transfer waitlist thread, here it is:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/2140697-ucsd-waitlist-fall-2019-transfer-p1.html

@ohm888 @sagaciousforever
My bad. Let me clarify.
Maybe I was mistaken since I misunderstood @sagaciousforever’s post. It was late at night. People make mistakes.
What I meant to say is that it isn’t uncommon for transfer students at UCs to enter as transfer students & still take 1-2 lower division courses. This isn’t just my opinion, but confirmed by UC admissions officials.

However, @sagaciousforever should still follow up regarding their provisional contract since for their case, it seems UCSD may have been under the impression they were going to take those courses or they reported that they would. Since English was one of the courses, it may or may not pose as an issue. IGETC vs. English requirements may be considered differently.

Quoting the San Diego website,
“If you plan to follow the IGETC, consider:

partial IGETC is also possible – this is useful if you’ve chosen a pre-major that requires a lower-division sequence of coursework once you get to UC San Diego;”
however, this seems to specify lower division courses that are pre-reqs only (not an english requirement). Just check with someone to make sure.

@kristinpete I’m surprised I didn’t get rejected because normally UCSD would reject people in my major since it’s somewhat impacted

@Ohm888 I appreciate so much for your long response.

I am just confused because UCSD saw my 2019 Spring schedule (they knew that I was not planning to take missing prereqs) before they reached to a decision and they still admitted me.

I will email the admission office and ask if I can take it/them in Fall. I am not even sure if I have finished all the Calculus classes depends on how many transferred, but I am missing the second english for sure.

I will also ask them to check what are the missing prereqs I have.

If I do decide to attend UCSD, I don’t want to take it/them in the summer since I have other plans (probably will do an internship+spend time with family and friends). Therefore, I will email and ask if I can take it in Fall at UCSD. If I have to take it/them in the summer, I would rather stay at Pepperdine and go to USC if admitted.

Anyways, thanks for your help in helping me to deal with my abnormal situation!
