Just listened to (some of the) UF Board of Trustees December meeting.
UF priority applications (due by Nov 1) were up to more than 67K this year from 60K last year (final applications last year were just under 67K – so you’d expect another 6-7K applications between now and March 1, I guess). There were slides with significant increases in OOS applicants, international applicants, honors program applicants, and 1st generation applicants over the past 4 years.
Perhaps more interesting, UF is apparently planning to move to the more common Early Action/Regular Decision system that other large public universities have for the class of 2029 admissions (high school class of 2025). The slide of the plan (not yet fully approved, I guess) showed an EA deadline of Nov 1, with decisions out by the end of January (admit, deny or defer), and then also a regular decision application deadline of Jan 15, with admission decision by Mar 1 (admit, deny, waitlist).
Also, from Sasse’s remarks the second day of the Dec BOT meeting, the average SAT for all students was 1410 and for OOS students 1440. I assume for the most recently admitted class, but there wasn’t a slide so I’m not sure…
Did they mention anything about adding AP scores to the considerations? I know they currently don’t look at them at all, which is baffling considering how many large and understaffed schools in Florida resort to allowing their students to run wild with cheated/inflated grades in an insane number of AP/online classes. For that reason it’s good that they aren’t test optional, but I wish there were more standardizing factors.
Yes, their AP credit is more lenient than most schools of their “caliber,” but is there any hope of them considering AP scores in the admissions process?
Thanks for sharing! I’m sure this year’s admissions season will be brutal, with more applying. And I’m glad to hear about the possible plans for an EA… like another poster said the 11/1 deadline with no news until February is crazy, especially when schools like UCF, Umiami, and even FSU come out months earlier.
Do any schools consider AP scores in admissions process? I am genuinely curious as I have never heard of that. I thought it was more of considering the AP classes and the rigor of a schedule with the scores only being sent to the college you’re committed to for the sake of credit placement?
I wonder what this year’s will be, since there seems to be a pattern of average test scores getting higher and higher. UF was already a reach for me, but with a 29 ACT I don’t know if my chances are all that good with these average stats.
What are you asking? Yes. UF gives extra weight for AP courses (as well as honors) just like many other colleges. They give credit for AP courses passed at a certain level. UF is becoming a very tough admit. It’s a state school to serve it’s instate students first and foremost. With 67K applications I’m sure getting top students isn’t a problem.
It will probably go up only 10 points or so, as it seems to go up quite gradually. Also, it looks like most of the application growth this year was out of state, and a lot of those people seem to apply with very low scores (basically auto-rejects) because they don’t understand just how selective UF is. They think that just because they got a letter in the mail from them means they will get in. I don’t think 29 is low enough to be an auto-reject, but it will probably be an uphill battle. I have 4.6 GPA and 33 ACT and I am still worried I will be rejected.
Trust me, OOS absolutely know how competitive UF is. At least the New England states do. So much for the theory that applications will go down due to the political climate (an argument I always thought was laughable).
I know many do, but there were people at my school who applied with 3.6 weighted gpas and 1200 SAT. They thought since they got a letter in the mail, or because their parents got in with similar stats many years ago, they could get still get in now.
I have a 4.15 W according to UF’s recalculation system (their middle 50% is 4.4-4.6), 35 ACT, NMSF, solid EC’s. People keep telling me that I’m in, but I wonder if the disparity in GPA is just unforgivable when I come from a semi-competitive school.
3.0UW/3.8W at an out of state public high school in 9th grade with a C+ in AP CSP, then 3.9UW/4.65W at small parochial school from 10th-11th grade. So I guess the former. 7AP/2DE, both schools were pretty well resourced and one of the most competitive in their respective areas. 5.0W this semester and 5’s on most of my APs, but that doesn’t matter ig. So I guess I can only wait and hope.
