UK Colleges for Criminology/Psychology Major?

Suggestions please, thank you. :slight_smile:

Based on your other posts, you are in grade 9 and just starting at a boarding school that has a good college counseling team (though they don’t have much UK experience), so treat this as shopping- you are a long way from making these decisions. That said, I think your boarding school may limit admission to, and number of, AP classes, and getting enough APs to apply to UK unis can be challenging. Keep an eye on the ones that will also accept SAT subject tests.

Start with unis such as Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Queens Belfast, Warwick, York. Every uni will have full info on what you need for admissions, and what courses you take each year. This will vary a lot between unis, and won’t have a lot of choices, esp in the 1st/2nd year, so read the details carefully.

Also, be sure to check the ‘qualification’ column for BA or BS- there are some 2 year programs that are more like a Community College program.

@collegemom3717 Thank you for the uni suggestions, as well as the advice on AP + SAT subject tests! I think it makes sense for me to start looking into colleges and majors now, as I am actually not in the 9th grade. Please remember that some of us decide to attend a boarding school midway through our high school careers! :slight_smile:

oops- my bad for making assumptions!

Also, where do you want to work when you are done? The career for this kind of degree is going to look different in the US vs UK VS Asia. Are you clear on your path after this degree? Will it be relevant in your home country?

One thing you need to be aware of is that you don’t have majors in the UK like you do in the US - you study just the one subject (or occasionally a combination) that you’ve applied for. So you will need to decide whether you want to do psychology or criminology, or combine the two.

Criminology is not as established an academic subject, so you may find it easier to get in, but fewer courses available. Most of the places which offer the combination are lesser ranking universities.

For psych it will be helpful to make sure you get to AP Calc.

@collegemom3717 No problem! :slight_smile:

@Sybylla Hmm, I haven’t thought that far into the future yet. Thanks for bringing that up! Criminal justice is so interesting to me, though, so I’d love to have a job in that field!

@Conformist1688 Thank you so much for the useful information! I’ll definitely keep this in mind. Is AP Calculus sort of like a requirement if I want to go into psychology? Would AP Psychology be better? Thanks again :slight_smile:

I’d love to have a job in that field!<<<<<<<<<

But what job? It can mean parole officer/juvie/social work/ that kind of thing. If you have more academic/career trajectory aspirations in relation to the criminal sector, then you will want to really examine where you want to end up and how best to get there. As this kind of degree/qualification can be variable in it’s delivery you should make sure it is something that offers you an ROI at the end especially if you don’t live in a country where these kind of job roles exist? Make sure it is the route you really want to take.

AP Psych gets no respect in the UK- it counts as 1/2 an AP

Most psych programs specify Math (by which they usually mean Calc) & a science (Bio, Chem, Physics) as admissions subjects.
