UMaine for mechanical engineering vs 3-2 program at LAC [Wheaton(MA)->Dartmouth]? [late admissions: SUNY New Paltz, UConn Storrs, URI]

I am one myself. But I was first denied, even for Industrial Engineering. And I had so many Engineering classes that people always asked why I do not have Engineering degree…

Hi There,
Just wanted to add that, academically, Engineering and Nursing are in an absolute league of their own at UMaine. Your kiddo will find her people!!
My D22 is in Nursing at UMaine. We are OOS. Generous merit and a beautiful, peaceful location, but also convenient to a decent sized city, were major draws.
Hope you had a nice visit to Orono. What did you all think?
Best wishes!

@OceanAir I was hoping you’d show up and give UMAINE the love it deserves! Glad your daughter is doing well!

I know a young woman graduating from nursing this year at UMO. She wants to go into psychiatric nursing. She’s doing great.

Hopefully @ArtMom22 ŵill come back to CC and let us know how the visit to UMaine (and possibly New Paltz) went.

adding in that Umass also mentions for an MS in MechE they take physics, mathematics, metallurgy or materials majors… certainly any school has math and physics… I am not sure acceptance rates for BEs, of course.

So, this is the latest: I was hoping to share her decision, but she hasn’t arrived at one yet.

We toured UMaine on Sunday. It was finals week and the campus was pretty subdued, which isn’t always a bad thing for a kid who can be overwhelmed with too much stimuli.

The engineering building shared by biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering was just opened last year and cost a staggering $78 million to build. It’s clearly very impressive. Our tour guide was great. I didn’t realize the Frederick Olmsted designed the main quad.

I think it could be great. But I’m not sure D24 can see herself there.

She’s trying to keep an open mind. But she really dislikes the idea of large lecture classes, and it sounds as though most intro and gen ed classes are large lectures, even in the honors program. There may be smaller discussion groups, but still a large lecture format.

Beyond that, her broad assessment of the other student that were that they didn’t appeal to her. It’s a superficial assessment, to be sure and she may still warm to the idea.

Finally, we’re trying to figure out when we can get to New Paltz between her varsity sport and AP exams as well as an acute eye problem that I’m struggling with. New Paltz extended their response deadline to June 1, same as UMaine. Wheaton extended to May 15.

Thank you for the update. Hopefully you can visit/revisit the other options and one school will feel right for your D.

I think she’s leaning toward Wheaton, because she had a strong sense that it was a fit and that she could find her place there and figure out the engineering piece either through the Dartmouth program or as a transfer when she is more confident in her independence. I think she may need the smaller campus and the smaller class sizes at the outset. It won’t be the quickest route, but that is ok by me.

Obviously, it would be great if she came off the wait list at Trinity. But beyond writing the LOCI, there is not much she can do.

If Wheaton is the right fit then that is great. I expect there is a chance that your D will stay at Wheaton for four years.

Transferring is hard for any student. As a transfer you walk into a new school where almost every other student in the grade is already in a routine, understands the academic expectations, and has a solid group of friends (many freindships are formed freshman year when everyone is new to the school). It can be hard to break in. Transferring CAN be done successfully but don’t discount the difficulty.

Agreed that transferring is challenging. And probably more challenging for some (like D24) vs others.

She hasn’t made any final decision and she continues to consider all options, including UMaine.

We will visit New Paltz, but it may not happen before Memorial Day. It’s a 5 hour drive each way. No reasonable public transport there from here. And I’m the only driver. So, carving out 2 days in this busy season leading up to graduation is not easy. I think she will like the vibe and the town. But it likely will still have these large lecture classes as part of the gen eds.

Agree that New Paltz is worth a visit.

Wherever she ends up, I wish your D the best.

My close friend lives in New Paltz.
It’s a fantastic part of NYS & a great SUNY town. Always a solid choice!
Keep us posted on her decision!

FWIW, here’s a comparison (from CDS data) vis-a-vis class sizes and some other factors. I’m not seeing evidence of large lecture classes at New Paltz.

Sounds like a stressful time; I hope the eye problem is resolving.

Terrific find. Thank you!

I know two who did (one in process) a Masters (Notre Dame) with a Physics undergrad and the current one is at Ga Tech - also a Physics undergrad from a school in Boston - but I know he took some engineering classes at Tufts.

@momsearcheng will DM you their profiles.

LATE-BREAKING UPDATE: D24 just got into UConn Storrs campus for engineering with merit! That is unexpected, given that she didn’t apply until April, well after the deadline.

She is also a hoops fan gal, so very excited. She is a tiny bit worried about the size of the school, but we will tour asap. It’s less than 3 hours from here.

Yay!! A wonderful option to have. Keep us posted!
