@supergirlsmom yeah they probably wouldn’t have wanted to admit that they are still processing applications and didn’t realize/didn’t let you know that the application wasn’t complete earlier! I mean, being so late with decisions is bad enough in itself, but not even telling people that their applications aren’t complete until April 19th is just level of disorganization and mismanagement.
Just here to say I joined the waitlist a week ago (in-state) with midyear stats of 2.66/2160.
Now to state something important I go to what is probably UMass’ favorite high school and just 3 years ago, maybe even 2 years ago, UMass was everyone’s safety where I go since everyone with a 2.5 and above was pretty much guaranteed in (with a few 2.3s and 2.4s let in as well). This year everyone from my school 2.5-3.0 got waitlisted and below that rejected.
I’m not mad at all since this gives me an excuse to burn an extra $10000 and go to University of Colorado Boulder for the fall term before transferring.
See you all in the Spring.
@supergirlsmom What schools did she get into for your backup plan?
My son is on the wait list and cannot sign up on Spire for a “Minuteman for a Day” session this week, because Spire sign up is for admitted students. I called admissions and they said if he can’t sign up on Spire, then he cannot register for the event. Has anyone on the wait list gone to one of these Minuteman for a Day sessions?
Hi Tayles,
We went to admitted students day and really just walked around. They dont seem to have anything going for the waitlisted students/spring start students. It would be nice if they can get a better feel of everything now, especially if they are accepting to attend in the Spring.
@becautious Slippery Rock, Purdue, Rutgers, Emerson plus two waitlists.
Do spring admits have to commit by May 1?
@supergirlsmom Purdue is a great school. Without in-state tuition it’s more expensive, but otherwise on par if not better than UMass, depending on major.
@nohelicopters Yes, Purdue is a great school and she really liked the program there, but we did not realize when she applied that they do not provide any out of state financial aid. She didn’t get any merit aid there, so it is off the table for us. Rutgers and Emerson are the best programs in her major and the best fit of the four schools she was admitted to.
@supergirlsmom if you are waitlisted and chose to be waitlisted for fall 2016 and spring 2017 and do not get a call for fall admission they will send you an admission packet in the fall for admission (around November I believe) and you commit then. You cant commit prior until they send you an admission packet and can place your deposit
@CGumass thanks
@Tayles someone kind of asked the same question earlier in the thread and another person said that you can probably just drop in on the same events that you technically need to register for, you just won’t get the $6 lunch voucher. I don’t think they’re going to be watching that carefully to make sure everyone who’s going to the panel and tour are officially registered. My mom and I are probably going to do just that this weekend.
Does everyone think that this school will ever release the result
@AnnaNg I think if you haven’t heard from them yet, you should email or call the admissions office.
@Tayles The Minuteman for a Day event is for admitted students only. However, I think they do have an information session/tour aimed towards juniors who are interested in the school. Although I understand your son is a senior, if you really want, you can probably attend one of these sessions instead. You’ll probably get the same info out of it that we who attended the Minuteman for a Day session did (might not get lunch though, but I doubt that’s very important).
Go here if you’re interested: http://www.umass.edu/visitorsctr/campus_tours
(Might want to hurry though, seems like there are only a few spots left)
All- my son declined spot at UMASS AM today. He is informing all of the places he will not be accepting a spot from today, in order to free up spots for those waiting. I am hoping others are doing the same to open up spots for those who’ve been placed on the waitlist. It’s better to let all the colleges you are declining know vs just letting their offer lapse on 5/2. You never know if you will want to go to grad school somewhere down the road, so it’s best to use good manners and politely decline and thank them for their kind offer. Besides it’s the right thing to do for those anxiously hoping a spot opens for them. Good luck to all!
@becautious Where is your son planning to attend?
I have heard of a lot of people denying Umass and their offer for admission and are going to other schools. While there are a lot of people still going and attending it does still leave hope for waitlisted people because of the amount of people who have/will be denying. Keep your head up waitlisted people because it is almost 5/1! Umass will begin to go to the waitlist after commitment day and hopefully begin calling people soon!
On the contrary to above, this year I’ve seen a lot of top notch students at my school get stuck here because they got rejected from everywhere else (from the Ivies to BU, Northeastern, NYU and College of the Holy Cross). But we shall see.
I have a question for those experienced in the waitlist but it’s a bit weird because UMass seems to prefer students from my school. I got that status with my 2.66 and 2160 SAT but my senior midyear grades, compared to my previous near-straight Cs with a few As have been B, B and A in my APs and B, B+ and B in my regular classes.
Just how far can my grades drop? I’m not asking this because I want them to but it seems like I’m look at AP grades of C+, C+ and A- and regular grades of B, B- and B (obviously this is in no way concrete). My GPA will still end up going up to a whopping 2.7-2.75 in the end but obviously the transcript isn’t as pretty.
To add to that, it is worth noting that a lot of kids with GPAs between 2.5-2.6 have also gotten waitlisted with Ds on their senior transcripts… I just don’t know.
Sorry if this is so convoluted but am I safe? UMass is the only financially viable school for me.
I think people need to change their attitude that they are “stuck” anywhere. Life is full of situations where you won’t get what you want. Make the most of where you are. For the most part, how well you do and attitude defines where you’ll go after college.
