I called admissions today about the waitlist and they didn’t really say much about it. They lady told me the higher ups deal with taking people off the waitlist and said they are trying to deal with sorting though the commit students first and the payments before they deal with the waitlist. But as we know they have started calling people so just keep your ears out and hopefully others will get a call!
2 kids from my school got off the waitlist yesterday (with 2.79/1850 and chose option 3) and today (with 3.0/1620 and chose option 1). Either the school is STILL biased towards my school (hey I’m not against that at all) or the waitlist is truly unranked and randomized.
Does anybody have any idea how they choose kids off the waitlist (other then the vague stuff they said on the official waitlist letter)? I hope it’s not based off of who replied to the waitlist email first because that’s just plain unfair to those of us who got it super-late. (ACTUALLY, the girl with the 3.0 didn’t get her waitlist status until April 8th… Now I’m really curious).
Also based on what @CGumass said and considering how quickly their resorting to the waitlist, I’m wondering if they drastically overshot their yield prediction. I honestly hope so lol
@rayword45 Good to know! I also heard of 2 other people who got. a call as well yesterday but I do not know their SATs or GPA. But, I do think it is truely random because from what i’ve heard/seen such as the varrying gpa’s and SATs scores. When I called admissions today I questioned them about how the do go about picking and all the lady was able to tell me ws that the higher ups deal with looking at the waitlist and picking people off of it. So who really knows! They also told me they wouldnt be looking at the waitlist yet but as we know they already have so. Just keep your fingers crossed and like you said hopefully they did overshoot their prediction!
I feel like I’m spamming the hell out of this thread.
Do you guys think I should give calling the admissions officers a shot about this waitlist situation? Never really had a good interaction with them (thankfully they never asked for a name) but it’d be nice to try to squeeze some info out of them (I mean, ALREADY? The deadline for the waitlist was June 1st!)
I am still praying to all of lords that they’re actually choosing kids from my school in larger proportion as was the supposed tradition. And I’m praying that their yield was really bad this year (which would be hilarious considering their cutoffs this year were RIDICULOUS by my school’s standards).
Just got off the waitlist!!! They just called me.
@rayward45 My advice to you is to start to think of yourself separate from your high school cohort. I doubt it matters any more what the history of your high school is. You presumably already updated the admissions office by email with any improvements to your original submission and an expression of your serious interest. They’ve probably got you ranked in the wait list already. If you call you will get undergrad office workers, and they can’t really help you. So much of college admissions is gut reactions to all the materials they have – as far as I know, UMass is not required to admit anybody in particular, so who knows what tips the balance in a particular case. Maybe they need more OOS or oboe players; some factors are totally out of your control. Nobody will ever know.
I suggest you mentally move on to your plan B.
My son just got off the waitlist this morning. They called his cell and left a message to call back.
Right after I read that post about mentally moving on (a few hours ago that is), I get a call saying I got unwaitlisted, and that I was also admitted to Isenberg even though I’m doing Math/Political Science. No more anxiety for me!
Another friend from school also got unwaitlisted today with a 2.78/1730.
@rayword45 Congratulations, you must be relieved. Enjoy your graduation and sign of for an NSO as soon as possible. Do yourself a favor and stay out of Southwest and take the advantage of this break and do well at school. Grades in college are even more important than ones in HS. Employers won’t give you a break.
That’s fantastic @rayword45 ! I typed all that out for nothing What I was really getting at was preparing for plan B (which I know in your case was also totally fine) is healthier than getting over-anxious about Plan A. So glad it worked out for you.
So happy to hear the news! You must be relieved! I hope a lot of other students got the same message! Enjoy the summer and good luck in the Fall!
I got off the waitlist yesterday. Got a call. I have a 3.15 gpa weighted and that includes band, 1700 SAT (550 math, 560 critical reading, 590 writing).
@college101101 thank you for the great advice. We called today to speak to the admissions person and my son was removed from waitlist and admitted for the fall. We had to take his second choice of major but that isn’t an issue.
Congrats to those getting admitted from the waitlist.
@profino who did you ask to speak to and what did you say? I’m thinking about calling admissions but not quite sure how I should go about it and bring it up.
I got unwaitlisted. Does anyone know what the next steps are?
My SPIRE changed back from “Wait List Confirmed” to Under Review, and they said it would take a day or two from there to have it fully fixed.
The packet in the mail is supposed to come in 2 weeks or something.
we didn’t request any specific person, the lady who answered the phone was very helpful. They asked that my son send an email confirming his desire to come to Umass in the fall and that he would take his second choice of major. He did that and an hour later he was told he was in by email. Same as above the packet will be send this week and he has 2 weeks to accept. I also have a daughter who is a junior in the Honors College, not sure if that helped or not.
My S had already been accepted to, committed to, and was happy with his second choice major, psychology. But this weekend he found out he was accepted to his first choice major, computer science. They automatically changed the major for him. We had just spent hours working out how he should plan the first couple of semesters so he could apply to double major and he might have been leaning against it. Now he will be rethinking from the other direction.
It’s been almost a week(wednesday) I still haven’t heard anything from umass amherst. Should I call them about this? My spire account updated from “Waitlist” to “Under Review.”
