UMass Amherst class of 2024 Early Action Results

Theunknown286 and philippians

Currently to transfer into CS you need to take 4 classes CS121 (programming), CS187 (data structures), Calc I, and Calc II getting a B (or maybe B+ I forget) in all classes. There has been an explosion of interest in the CS major and limited capacity in classes, so the requirements to transfer may get more difficult. By far the hardest requirement is CS187. It is a weed-out class. Several students drop, and the class median is typically set to a B-, so to transfer into CS you would need to perform better than the median in a class with mostly CS majors. Most students find CS187 difficult; all students find the class very time consuming. My son is a sophmore CS major and took CS187 first semester freshman year (placed out of CS121 because he got a 5 on the AP exam). He found the class challenging and easily more time consuming than all his other classes combined that semester. Second year CS classes have been relatively easier. Check the UMass CS website and google reddit CS187 for more info. Good luck!!

I was accepted 2+2 into Harrisburg.

Asked for reconsideration.

Now going to UP as undecided.

Smeal doesn’t actually start until Junior Year so realistically there is no advantage to applying right into Smeal.

I highly suggest your child asks for reconsideration.

Daughter accepted to Isenberg last night 12/17
In State
SAT 1310
GPA UW 3.8 W4.42
Rank top 20% small high school
Lots of EC’s: 1st place MA state DECA, NHS, Italian NHS, DECA Executive board, VP Stock Exchange Club, Executive Board, Varsity Cheer Captain 4 years, Varsity Volleyball 2 years, Varsity Softball, AP Scholar, Fight for a Cure ALS Founder, PT job and many leadership positions etc etc

She was actually hoping she didn’t get in because she really does not want to stay in state. Coming from a small high school she wants to spread her wings a little. She knows Isenberg is a smart choice for her given we are in state so now she has to decide to go with her head or with her heart. I have a gut feeling her heart will win and she will fly away…

Good luck all

Thanks for all the info!! I think WPI or UConn (If he gets in) will be the top two choices for my son…we live in CT.
So interesting, we thought of umass as a safety but clearly it isn’t!

Son accepted into Isenberg last night around 4:45 pm.

In state, 4.1 W GPA, 1350 SAT, varsity athlete, lots of extracurriculars/leadership.

Good luck to all that haven’t heard. My daughter went to UMass and her year people were hearing back with acceptances as late as mid January for EA.

I haven’t heard back yet for CS either.

My oldest went way “out of state” for the same reason For some that opportunity to learn, grow, and experience in a place father away can contribute way more to a person’s long term growth than can happen if they stay “closer” by. Best of luck to her…

@ssm2024 son reapplied both summer and undecided to see if he can get into UP campus. However he got directly admitted to Kelley School at IU so most likely will end up there. Good luck to you!!

anyone with free time on their hands want to call umass admissions to see if the next batch of results will come out Monday or Tuesday? or will it be after the 25th?.. Their twitter feed has gone quiet… i think they got in trouble by answering too many questions

Not going to rate my personal essay as that is biased

They asked me to choose a major in the College of Natural Sciences so not an outright rejection but I chose physics as that’s another interest of mine.

Did anyone else get a decision today?

Decision for my DS yesterday evening:
In State - accepted!
SAT 1550; ACT 35 or 36 I don’t remember
4.0 uw
Engineering
lots of APs and ECs
Honors College
2K merit (?) award (and Abigail Adams though we got that separately - it’s a Massachusetts thing for advanced on the state HS exams, worth about 1500)
I saw also that Engineering (and Business) have extra (large) fees for those majors at UMA which is sort of strange.

When you get accepted for engineering do you just get accepted to the college of engineering? is it true for everyone that the first year you have to get certain grades to enter your major?

@fretfulmother $830 is fair, compared to the University of Delaware’s engineering fee of 4K/year ?

UMass is on Par with UConn and WPI in terms of selectivity and education and only going to get more competitive. It’s now coincidentally ranked by US News same as both UConn and WPI at 64.
All great choices.

The letter does not mention any federal aid, work-study or federal loans. Does anyone have any idea when these would be sent? Umass has already received our FAFSA.
