MODERATOR’S NOTE: This is a results thread. Please get back on topic. Thanks.
These comments are related to the topic of results, and why so many in-state applicants were denied who had stellar stats. This is really a huge issue and I think needs to be looked into further.
I will give the results for my son:
1500 SAT
Over 4.0 weighted
Many solid activities both related to and not related to computer science with lead roles.
Not only did he not get into the computer science program, but he also got waitlisted at the university. A few of his friends with similar or better stats also got waitlisted. How did this happen?
I would start a new topic to discuss the why, but you can report the result here.
A week after admission there was an email stating that financial aid was on the portal.
@ Finalchildof3 Along with the acceptance they sent us the SPIRE id and the netID . Following that they sent the tuition fee breakdown etc.
Was anything else expected?
@Finalchildof3 Isenberg runs a pretty good “admitted students” information day at some point in April. I am not sure if they have another one before. In general Umass Amherst does not send out many communications at least not to the instate admitted students.
I am an international student from India who has applied EA and I still haven’t received any decision. Are EA decisions still coming out?
@user_699232 I got my one on Jan 14
@ellover1 I got in with 16k and honors
SAT-1480
GPA- 4 out of 4
Few ECAs not anything lucrative
International
Got into CICS-CS major and Honors college with 16k Chancellors Award.
Anyone else?
I don’t necessarily disagree with the points that have been made about the in state/OOS questions around what’s fair, etc. That said, can I politely request that maybe it’s time to start a dedicated thread on the topic?
MODERATOR’S NOTE. See post 780. I will issue warnings for off topic posts since my instructions were ignored.
I was accepted into the computer science program with a 1460 SAT, 790 Math 2, and a 4.5 W GPA. I have a ton of Computer science clubs and classes which I believe helped. One of my best buds had a 1350 SAT, 4.45 W, 10th in our class, had unreal extracurriculars (Eagle Scout, NHS, Two-sport Captain, Worked at the church) got waitlisted here. computer science is a very hard major to get into I guess and I didn’t realize how lucky I was until I got on this thread.
@joebar Congrats!
Just wanted to share our situation. My daughter was accepted EA into the College of Natural Sciences for a Natural Resources Conservation major. Here ACT was 33, and her GPA was 3.7. We are in-state. She doesn’t have a huge number of extracurriculars, but has been consistent with Color Guard/Winterguard for all four years of HS and does a lot of volunteer work. She got her acceptance notification on December 11, and didn’t receive any merit.
One last comment on CS. My daughter’s in-state friend was accepted into CS last year (class of 2023) and he supposedly had great academics, was in band and color guard. But he also told us that he heard UMassA “over-admitted” last year (or that a greater percentage of accepted candidates decided to attend than they had planned for) so that they general consensus around campus was that this year’s admissions were going to be much more stringent. Not sure if that was for CS or across the board. I do know there’s a huge difference depending on the competitiveness of the major. Just wanted to add a few other data points.
My Daughter was accepted in December into Communication Sciences and Disorders. It is not as competitive as CS but after reading this thread I am pretty surprised. She has a 4.5 GPA many EC varsity cheer captain for basketball and football NHS Italian HS and tons of volunteer and interning in the field however! Her SAT was 1050. Yes 1050 she has severe test anxiety. But that’s not the point. There are many kids here with amazing stats that deserve to have been admitted My daughter did not receive any merit at all therefore she will not be attending I hope all of you waitlisted with Amherst as your first choice get in.
Have RD Decisions for come out yet? I have a friend who said he got his already.
