UMass Amherst class of 2024 Early Action Results

To all those who are advocating for their children stating that the system is unfair and the people who applied near deadline were declined because the university ran out of space.

Let me clear your doubts old people!
First of all, don’t come here and post about the flaws in the system. Spend this time to find flaws in your son/ daughter’s application. There is more to college application than high stats and essays play a major role.

I myself applied 30 minutes before the deadline (RD) and I got in!
Don’t look for excuses for your daughter/son’s rejection like yield protection or the university running out of place. And please stop advocating for them here. Your children are big enough to handle these rejections and good luck for their future application.

could someone explain what the chancellor award is?

@smithve sounds like our daughters are very similar! My D in state accepted EA for wildlife conservation/resource conservation. GPA 3.9 but low SAT/ACT 1050, so we weren’t sure she’d get in. Also does color guard/marching band! Maybe they’ll meet up if both decide to attend. Good luck to all still waiting for replies - UMass is not as clear with their communications as other schools!

SAT 1050
GPA 3.13
OOS
Admitted with 16K Merit!

Wow @NYCDadof2 that’s great. Do you mind saying what his major is? My daughter has the same SAT 4.6 weighted gpa in state and got zero merit. Good for him.

My D admitted w/1330 SAT & 4.3 weighted gpa. $12k merit OOS.
Good luck to all!

@“Jolynne Smyth” Headed there with DS on 2/9 for UMass destination day. It’s one of his top choices, so we shall see. Amherst is an awesome little bustling college town, the Pioneer Valley is so pretty, and the 5 college consortium is a plus. DS is more partial to Rutgers due to Business school acceptance and proximity to NYC, but he got 12 k per year merit at Umass, so it’s majorly
In the running. Lots of luck!

CTCape - good luck to your son w/the UMass destination day! I’ll be interested to hear how it goes. We are likely heading up there end of Feb. Although I should probably find one of those fun days like ‘destination’ to make it more enjoyable.

Enjoy!

Accepted for Nursing with Honors, 14k scholarship. Out of state. I’m honestly surprised because I feel like my stats aren’t as high compared other students not in honors… 32 ACT, 1380 SAT, 4.4 Weighted GPA. However, I did participate in a LOT in high school, worked a ton and wrote a pretty bomb college essay. Also applied to Northeastern (deferred), UMaryland (accepted), Sacred Heart Nursing (accepted), and waiting on Colby College Pre-Med and Quinnipiac PA. Instagram is @corinne.rosee!!!

Accepted for nursing with 14K. 1410 SAT and 4.15 GPA. Internship at hospital, NHS, 2 sport captain, jobs, etc

DS received early admission in Computer Science, with President’s scholarship.
He is not sure whether he will go to UMASS or some other school, as he is waiting for decisions from other competitive schools

But, in UMASS SPIRE system, he did the mouse clicks to accept the President’s scholarship and federal unsubsidized loan

Question is: does that mean HE HAS to ATTEND UMASS?
DS is getting concerned

His thought/assumption was that: if he does not want to go to UMASS, then these “scholarship acceptance” will simply become VOID … but now he is very concerned

Could some of the knowledgeable experts share your knowledge/throughts?

No, you would have to pay the deposit to attend. But if he decides not to attend it would be good to let them know so they can offer the spot to someone else.

Thank you @philippians
As of now, UMASS is his first preference.

If he gets other opportunities that he prefers, of course, he will let UMASS know as soon as possible

Daughter accepted early action for physics in the college of natural science. Went to Destination Day over the weekend and decided to commit by the time we left!
In state

@ calcuttaboy2002
If I can ask what are some of the other schools you are waiting to hear back from? My son is also interested in CS accepted Umass and waiting on other schools.

My son as well. We are waiting on UConn and RIT. Accepted to Umass, WPI, Drexel

For the in state UMass people whose kids got into CS what were your kid’s stats? My son had a 1500 SAT, close to 4.0 unweighted GPA and tons of EC so I am still trying to figure out why he didn’t get in. He got into a great school ED2 but UMass was his first choice. Thanks!

Why I was admitted to informatics major and would like to know what are the current requirements ill have to complete in order to transfer to CS? Moreover l, what are the internship opportunities for intl student in CS at Umass?

@WaitingOnCollegeResponses DD was lucky enough got into CS. She had 1560 SAT, over 4.0 unweighted GPA and tons of ECs and APs (all APs are 5 and all SAT subjects are 800). I thought that a candidate like her is strong enough to get in during the first few waves but she got accepted right before Xmas, which was the last round acceptances before all the waitlist notifications sent out. There are over 600 high schools in MA but their CS only accepts 200ish freshmen every year. UMass CS ranking is good and in-state only pay less than half of tuition than other schools, which is the best value school unless getting scholarships somewhere else. So I believe the CS admission is very competitive as too many strong stats kids applied. I think my daughter’s why school essay helped her a bit because she really enjoyed the campus tour and spent a whole day (>10 hours) there so she had many good things to write about in her why essay.
