UMich Feb 1 Deadline

I know UMich’s RD deadline is on Feb 1st. This has always confused me because every other college’s deadline is beginning of January. Is there a huge caveat to applying to UMich RD? They offer EA. I’m assuming EA is better in terms of acceptance.

If someone is applying for a competitive major at UMich (Like CS or Engineering), would applying EA confer an advantage? UMich’s site doesn’t say anything like this.

Why is UMich’s deadline so late relatively? Does UMich fill up most of its class with EA?

I don’t believe so, but I’m tagging our UMich experts @Knowsstuff and @sushiritto.

Is there a reason you don’t want to apply EA?

Essays. I don’t think I can get the UMich essays done over the 6 other EA school essays I am going to work on. And I’ve got Common App Essay too.

Purdue releases their decision on Jan 15th. If I get into Purdue, I’d rather go there than UMich. UMich is a very pricy school as well. Purdue is my preferred choice over UMich.

That is NOT true! There are plenty of other colleges with deadlines after January.

Perhaps OP is referring to the RD deadlines of the colleges on their list, mentioned on their other thread:

Why is Michigan on the list at all, given your budget ?

Always apply EA to any school. Chances per them is about the same. But no reason not to apply EA. Lots of kids are deferred so going into RD can be typical.

I can come back later to add. I will be gone most of the day today. Keep asking questions.

Basically approach with UMICH is like this.
Apply EA. Get deferred. Then get WL. Then confirm you want WL. Then accepted (or not.)
That was case for DD and many of her friends.
If you do not apply EA, I am not sure your chances reduced or not to follow above path.

Good to hear. I do not want to apply to UMich if I get into Purdue, whose decision releases on Jan 15th. UMich is also a financial stretch for my family but I love the school.

Yes.

There are similar schools to Michigan that are much cheaper.

You should not strain your family financially, especially given your major.

Where you go for aero likely not gonna matter.

My kid turned down Purdue for Bama. Works with Michigan, Purdue and other top schools but also W Michigan, Akron, Buffalo and more. They all make the same.

You can go for $20k to $80k and get the same job. Don’t overstrain your parents. Michigan is $150k over your budget.

You shouldn’t even consider applying.

Find schools you can afford. There are many schools out there you can love. At the same time many kids go to the dream and don’t enjoy once there. Bad profs. Bad roomies etc.

Good luck.

So here’s the deal. I read part of your other thread. It doesn’t seem you want to go to Michigan and can’t afford it if you ever got in so. Why apply? Your an avg engineering student for Michigan.-3.93 unweighted /34 Act or the like. There is lots of competition for spots. If you can’t afford UIUC then how are you going to afford Michigan?

Saying this my engineering son works for an International company that came to Michigan specifically to recruit. His cohort of 7 is from Michigan., GT, UIUC, OSU (ugh… Lol), Penn state and University of Cincinnati. He works in Sweden doing a 4 year ELDP and works with others from Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway etc that went to Universities many never heard of. Their all capable.

Find the schools and “fit” that make sense for you. Don’t apply to schools for the names sakes. Trust me. I can rah, rah with the best of them about Michigan. Find an affordable school that feels right to you and make a name for yourself on campus being active and part of their school culture.

Looking at your list posted below - so you have need?

If not, you have UCONN, RPI, and Purdue. Three great ones. Your list can end there - a safety, likely, and low reach.

Some of the others meet need. So if you have need-great. If not, don’t apply to but rather find subs:

UMD (need Banneker Key), UIUC, Va Tech.

If you want great schools to meet budget - especially great for aero start with UAH which is surrounded by defense companies. Strong outcomes. Bigger - Bama, Mississippi State, Kansas, Missouri Science & Tech, Texas Tech. They crush your budget. U of AZ is outstanding aero and meets your budget. Iowa State another. Buffalo too. Florida and UMN too make budget as does FSU which will best budget but like Michigan engineering is not on main campus.

These schools are loaded with kids like you- they go for the dough or other reasons.

One of my co workers kids went to W Michigan over Michigan. $$. Works at Pratt & Whitney. Was Hartford. Got a big promotion to Utah.

If the economy is good, you’ll be fine. Or if there’s war. CS a bit tougher potentially with AI.

In the end it’s Finance 101 - don’t spend more than you can afford to. I get you’d love the big name but in your family’s case, if they can’t afford it the big name is a nightmare.

You shouldn’t be asking aboit EA vs RD (go EA). You should be asking yourself - what was I thinking (even visiting - although you may not have known costs or budget at that time) ?

Good luck
