UMich SMTD Decisions Class of '28

My son just received scholarship offer from SMTD and was disappointed (BM euphonium performance). I don’t want to sound ungrateful but we were really hoping for a lot more. He plans to email the professor tomorrow to see if there is any chance that he could get more.

If anyone has any experience successfully asking for additional scholarship money, I would appreciate any guidance.

@Linda_Anne We got an email about financial aid as well and as far as we can tell, the financial aid amount is a standalone number and does not include any merit aid. We still have 0 for merit aid but are hoping that the university will make an offer in the next few days. We really have no idea though!

Big time hoping for the same, all fingers and toes crossed for all of us :purple_heart:

My son is planning to email the professor tomorrow to appeal. I don’t know what else to do. He will only get merit money but I hope there is more available.

It says it’s from SMTD…
and I would be shocked if we qualified for non-merit aid as we haven’t gotten any need based aid from any other schools (unfortunately!)
But it would be amazing if it wasn’t merit!
I’ll double check!!

Same boat here!!
We got slightly more from IU/Jacobs- but that school is already like 20,000 cheaper than umich!

No email here - D24 is waiting for her LSA (double degree result) so maybe with that….

Good morning! Is it safe to assume that many of you are out of state? We are in-state. When my son tried to check yesterday, it looked like he needed to have accepted the admissions offer before he could create the Wolverine Access.

Exactly! That is why I was hoping for more from Michigan!

Yes, we are out of state for all of the schools my son applied to.

One more thing, I just contacted admissions again because I’m going nuts, lol. The person I talked to was the same I talked to the other day. She assured again that some people might not receive their merit scholarship info until 4/1. I’m going to try to let it go until then, but it’s so hard to be patient

Last year my son received merit scholarship offers from three schools including UMich SMTD. we made a spreadsheet comparing the three programs side by side, including costs (tuition, boarding, travel), opportunities (studio and orchestra), potential for another degree or major, comments from current students and recent graduates, etc. He then wrote emails to these schools (studio professor and admission officer) appealing the offers. He knew that the professors knew each other and where he was applying to, so in his emails he laid out the three offers, summarized our comparison, and stated his “wishes” (customized for each school). It took three rounds of back and forth discussion before he made his decision on April 27th.
My son’s experience shows that merit scholarship can be appealed, and that the process took time. I’m by no means suggesting his approach was the best. He and some friends worked together to come up with their negotiation strategies. By the end of April, they were all happy with their decisions.

My son received an email from the professor just a little bit ago before having contacted him the professor obviously had not seen the merit offer before it went out and told my son that he was disappointed that the offer was low and encouraged him to appeal with the music admissions department and gave us the email to send it to. He encouraged him to include any other offers he had received from other schools. my son is working on his appeal email now. I’m so glad we have the support of the teacher.

We got an email today with a merit offer of zero. It’s a bummer but we’re not going to pursue it for now because UMich isn’t her first choice and we’re still waiting for other offers to come in (if any).

The UMich bass teacher from the start has encouraged us to get in touch about money if needed, which we will do if Michigan moves to the top of the list.

My son also received a merit offer of zero :sob::sob::sob: although it states that funds may becomes available, I think it’s time to start thinking about the other choices.

So sorry, and thinking the same. I told my D it has nothing to do with her or her performance but can’t help being a little pissed.

D24 too - she had been warned that there wasn’t much money and that it was being controlled by UMich admissions not by SMTD this year so not wholly unexpected but quite a contrast to the high merit she has got at other places. so yes may well mean UMich is off the table now

I’m all the emotions right now. Mostly really sad. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen this fire in my kid. I am confident though that he will succeed and fall in love with wherever he ends up. Still waiting to see if he gets an offer from CCM. He has a good offer from Butler, and the professor encouraged him to appeal if it’s his number 1. He has a good offer from Ball State (which is the most affordable in the first place…) which I’ve only even seen mentioned I think once in the music forums, so I feel a little wary about it. The professor attended both Juilliard and CCM, and my son really likes him.
