UMich SMTD Decisions Class of '28

No not as yet and possibly not at all - no merit compared to high merit almost everywhere else has made it very hard to justify in comparison. We haven’t appealed.

We committed elsewhere and didn’t appeal the financial decision… My D decided on another school/teacher.

We did submit an appeal, but will commit to my son’s number 2 choice (either CCM or Butler University.) If Michigan comes through with enough money, we will likely forfeit whatever deposit we put down on a number two and switch to Michigan, but also nit holding our breath for it. It just stinks that we will feel in limbo until likely June.

We have not committed anywhere yet, and I think it will be a last-minute decision. Very tough weighing all the pros/cons. SMTD was in S’ top 3, but I think it has slid to 4th now. No financial aid and no merit makes it hard to justify when there are other good options for tens of thousands less. We did not appeal the $0 merit since it was in 3rd place, and we would not be able to write an honest letter saying we would definitely commit if more money was offered.

We haven’t committed yet- and as of now it’s looking like my son will end up at Jacobs.
Appealing for more merit from Jacobs- if they come back with something substantial, we might also appeal our merit at SMTD- but with UMich already being 20,000 more, it would take a lot for it to be comparable.
Plus my son really loves the Jacobs’ program (although he loves UMich as a school and likes Ann Arbor way more than Bloomington)

Why do you think you’ll be in limbo until June? The appeals process won’t take that long, unless you’re waiting on something else?

My son committed - trumpet performance. He’s excited! I concur.

Certainly helps that we are in-state. Oberlin was a close #2 and very tough for him to decline. The trumpet prof there is amazing.

I can’t remember where I heard this, but I read somewhere that the Michigan appeals likely wouldn’t be looked at until near June. I feel like even if my son chooses a number 2, he won’t be fully committed until he knows the results of the appeal.

I had previously been told that they would start to look at appeals a few days before the April 22 deadline. Their goal is to get them done as quickly as possible because of the March 1 commitment date. The only reason they usually wait until closer to April 22 is that as more people except decline, they have a better idea of how much money they have available. Hopefully won’t have to wait that long.

That’s great! Is your son going to do marching band?

I hope so, it would be great to know by May 1. That’s the date I’ve given my son that he needs to tell me his number 2.

we have not committed, but my son is leaning towards Umich. He submitted his appeal on Sunday, waiting for Umich to match offers from IU, which is 3x more !!! Finger crossed. He will be studying Trombone Muisc ED

Good luck to him. My son appealed and they ended up matching his IU scholarship but it wasn’t quite double his original offer. I hope UMich can do something for your son. My son also plays the trombone and would like to take lessons if it works out.

Sorry for being so late! Last week was a doozy.

He would love to do marching band but is concerned about two things: 1) time and 2) the style of play not being conducive to indoor performance - instead of focusing on air and relaxing, you’re smashing the mouthpiece into your face. But he might his second year, depending on how he adjusts in year one. Your son?

My son loves marching band, so he’s definitely planning to submit an audition and hopes to do it his first year at Michigan. Depending on the time commitment, and how much he enjoys it, he’s not sure how long he will stick with it. It might be difficult to balance the schedule with being a performance major, but he has loved it so much during high school that he definitely wants to do it plus he’s a really big football fan so he enjoys games.

One of the benefits for my son In particular is being able to meet students who are non-music majors. It’s very large large organization but only a very small percentage of the marching band is actually music majors.

Just popping in to say that our appeals process is over and D committed to UMich today! Very excited that they were able to match offers.

Hi all, my son is deciding between his top two choices. We are still waiting for a second appeal decision for more scholarship money. He did have a successful first appeal.

It seems that I have a new anxiety unlocked each night when I have time to worry and am trying to sleep! Does anyone have any insight regarding housing for years 2-4? (Preferably I’d like my kid to stay in the dorms for freshman/sophomore, but I read on the website that this year that only about half of the freshman who requested forms for next year will be able to be placed.) From what I have read it’s difficult to find housing, and the campus apartments I have looked at are very expensive, with many coming in more expensive than dorm life. I’m hoping I’m missing something? That coupled with tuition increase of several thousand dollars in junior/senior year has me very, very anxious. Please let me know your thoughts on this!
