I submitted my app the last minute and my last name starts with Y. OMFG
LOL
I really don’t think it’s true that they push admissions into ED if they don’t get to them because for the past 3 years the results have come out a week early or so and you wouldn’t do that if you had more to go.
wait so when should we anticipate hearing results???
@allima Have a good night of sleep and check tomorrow morning. Then again tomorrow after. Repeat till the 24th.
I have a son that graduates this year and two other kids that applied and withdrew after being admitted to their ED schools so I’ve been following these threads for a number of years.
My sense is that due to the sheer volume of applications, UM triages EA applications based on quantitative statistics (re-calculated gpa and standardized test scores). It seems to me over the last couple of years… the large majority of EA admits have been high stats, in-state students.
The year S2 applied, we did hear from an admission officer that they couldn’t get through all the EA apps due to unexpected volume so they deferred more kids than normal. I believe this is similar to what @olliepopluv had to say.
anyhow, here’s some good news I posted weeks ago in this thread. While chatting with someone from admissions I was told UM was looking to take half the class from EA. This is a departure from the last two years where they took a lot less of EA applicants. I’d be pretty happy with that statistic were I an EA applicant.
Yay!!! I hope this year is a good year for applicants then. Yeah I always wondered how umich did a holistic review reading each application 3 times in 1.5 months
@quietdesperation why on earth would they not have an Oct 15 deadline, at the latest? Why do they do this to themselves? If they built more time in, they could have a saner, probably more reflective review.
@SingingBusDriver I hope you’re right and I’m wrong. I’m simply letting you know how this has played out for the past 3 years. Maybe this year will be different.
@binky17 I don’t think two weeks is going to make much of a difference given the volume of apps. If it was me, I’d algorithmically divide the applicants into three sorted piles: qualified, maybes and not qualified. At that point, I’d admit the top 1/3 of the qualified pile and holistically evaluate the bottom 2/3rds of the qualifeds. Just the way I might approach it, I have no idea if that’s how they do it.
I will say it’s a fabulous school in a great town. my S has had a great experience.
@quietdesperation we know that’s not how it is though, there are tons of high stat kids deferred EA right?
I hope we hear the decisions tomorrow!
@quietdesperation my husband and I met there in grad school, so it would be funny if my kid ended up there.
@nasoth yes, but I’d make two points:
- the qualified pile will be composed mostly out of high stats kids but there will be other attributes used to compile the list
- in the end, they may just run out of time to evaluate all the ea apps.
Last year, they got more applicants in EA (30Kish vs 25Kish, I think) so there is no doubt that more students are taken in EA. It makes mathematical sense tbh
take a look at this article from 2014, they actively reduced ea admissions:

@binky17 Hopefully you kissed under the arch! best of luck!
I know someone (2years ago) who got deferred and who was a national merit finalist, and salutatorian, of a very prestigious OOS high school. Michigan was her top choice, but not after that. She ultimately got a full ride to USC. Rumor has it they didn’t believe she would go there because of her high stats.
I’m thinking this year maybe they will take high stats people because ED’s have already come out and those that got in should already have pulled their apps. (Sadly, I know a few people who haven’t pulled their apps yet and are waiting to see if they get in just for posterity. ) Those remaining probably have genuine interest. Just my theory. I will say that if they say they are holistic than it should go beyond the stats. My opinion.
Wait, early decisions are out??!!
Wolverine access down as per practice…how results ll come
