UMKC 6-year BA/MD Program

For those who may want to find out more about the UMKC 6 year BA/MD program, you can go here:

Upcoming Events: https://futureroo.umkc.edu/portal/events-som?tab=som-bamd

School of Medicine visit options: https://futureroo.umkc.edu/portal/consultations-som?tab=som-ip (in person and virtual visits available)

2021 BA/MD Virtual Viewbook: https://www.umkc.edu/pub/som/BA-MD-Viewbook-2021/2021_BA-MD_Viewbook-.html (this is the most current one they have on the UMKC BA/MD admissions website: https://med.umkc.edu/bamd/visits/)

Since the pandemic, the UMKC SOM admissions office has offered and continues to offer a lot of virtual events/visits, so I would take advantage of these, especially if you’re outside of the state of Missouri where flying in or driving into Kansas City in the middle of the school year is not very feasible.

If you wish to visit the UMKC undergraduate campus (Volker Campus), that’s completely separate from the UMKC School of Medicine and you can go here: https://www.umkc.edu/admissions/visit-campus.html, although they do have dates that combine both an undergraduate campus visit (Roo Visit) and the UMKC School of Medicine visit: https://futureroo.umkc.edu/portal/roo-som

These are all for information purposes and do not factor into the application process, so don’t feel obligated to do it because you think it will somehow impact whether or not you get an acceptance, as it does not. I think it’s a great way to find out more about the program beyond just the website alone.

Hi! I am a current UMKC student and am interested in applying for the BA/MD program. I am a regional student from KS.

So my question was, what would my application process look like? Is my high school involvement considered in this process? Do they considered the college credit I received in HS and got transferred in in their “no more than 23 credit hours” criteria? I have more question branched off of these questions. Thank you!

Hey, @BD2umkc! Welcome to the College Confidential forum. These are really great questions and I’m glad you’re asking them. I’m assuming that you’re a current freshman UMKC undergraduate student applying to enter in this next year’s BA/MD class.

The application process is similar to those students applying during their senior year of high school. The major difference would be that your fall semester grades at UMKC would also be looked at: https://med.umkc.edu/bamd/timeline/ before your application is reviewed for a potential interview. That has to be received by January 20th of next year.

So, in terms of actual application processing, that won’t happen until after that date, although the deadline to submit the application + documentation (General Application for Admission, School of Medicine Online Supplemental Application, reference forms, official transcripts from high school & official test scores) is the same as it is for everyone else, November 1st. This means all of these items have to be RECEIVED by that date by the UMKC School of Medicine.

So really work as hard as you can to excel in UMKC coursework this semester. Go to SI sessions for science courses you’re taking if you’re having difficulty or need motivation. I generally thought those were helpful.

I would include your high school involvement and anything you’ve gotten involved in at UMKC in terms of student organizations or in healthcare exposure since graduating from high school. Maybe even weave it into your essays as well, where applicable.

The 23 credit hours criteria that you are talking about is with respect to at the time of application: https://med.umkc.edu/bamd/admission-requirements-eligibility/ – “Students with 23 hours or less of post-high school graduation college credit at the time of application.” So you’re perfectly fine here.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. That’s what forums like these are for.

Hello,

I am currently a KU student and have applied for the BA/MD program. I would like to inquire about the statistics for transfer students, specifically the GPA that college transfers typically have in their first semester. Additionally, I am interested in understanding how much weight is given to high school performance in the evaluation process. Lastly, I am concerned about the impact of receiving one B in my first semester.

I appreciate your help and look forward to your response.

Thank you.

Hey @KcMO12! Welcome to the College Confidential forum for UMKC’s BA/MD program.

So, unfortunately, there aren’t really any publicly released statistics (that I know of) with respect to those who complete one year of undergrad before entering the UMKC 6 year BA/MD program, just because they tend to make up such a small cohort of an entering Year 1 BA/MD class at UMKC. It can also vary from year to year how many transfer students are taken into an entering BA/MD Year 1 class as the 6 year program is one in which most students are high school graduates who matriculate right after high school.

Much of your application is evaluated by holistic review, so it’s sort of everything evaluated together but not any one component sinking you or clinching it in terms of interview offer and/or acceptance. So while your high school performance will factor in because it’s part of the process, being a transfer applicant, I think the greater emphasis will be how you’re doing academically in your very first semester of undergraduate coursework. The transcript for your fall semester is due by January 20th. I would try to do your very best this semester in terms of GPA, but I don’t think 1 “B” will sink you.

As an aside, if you do end up getting an acceptance into the UMKC BA/MD program, none of your undergraduate grade points/GPA at KU will transfer over to UMKC, since KU is outside of the UM system (you’d get credit, just not GPA/grade points). You’d start on a clean slate just like all the other UMKC BA/MD students.

While everyone sits and waits for a BA/MD interview offer (interview invites won’t be extended until late January so relax!!), in the past, the UMKC School of Medicine has done a form of the MMI (Multiple Mini Interview). I would practice using websites, Youtube videos, books from your local library, etc. I really don’t think it’s necessary to spend money to buy books or for prep courses for the MMI.

Google “MMI practice questions” so you can get in the groove of understanding and answering these type of questions. UMKC BA/MD still does the interview portion virtually since the pandemic, so no need to worry about extra travel and lodging expenses to Kansas City, which is nice. I would just make sure to wear something clean and professional (business casual should be fine).

Also, I believe they still do the Toledo Chemistry Test (it does not affect whether you actually get into the BA/MD program or not, so don’t worry there), which is a very basic chemistry placement test.

Roentgen, what are the chances of getting accepted as a late applicant? Also, my application status currently says this: “Your application’s current status is Awaiting Review. This means your application is with the admissions department or your academic department for an admission decision. Future updates to your application status will be posted on this status page.”

They put me in the late applicant pool because I only submitted the unofficial transcript on time, not the official one. I didn’t know because I’m a current college student and the email they kept on sending us about submitting college and/or high school transcripts was vague (didn’t say whether they had to be official or unofficial). So, I just submitted my college as official as I’m a current college student. Hopefully, I get called up for the interview. I’m an in-state applicant. I went and talked to them in person about this confusion, and they said they would reply by email, but haven’t gotten any email from them, yet.

Hey @waterfall_05!

So honestly, I’m not really sure on the statistics with respect to late applicants (it’s certainly not admissions data that has been publicly released). It most likely varies from year to year based on the caliber of applicants, how many submitted late, space availability for interviews, etc. If they extend an interview to you, that particular aspect of your application should really not come into play at the acceptance or rejection phase that happens in the weeks post-interview.

The admissions website itself states that official transcripts have to be submitted: https://med.umkc.edu/bamd/apply/. I could be mistaken (so don’t hold me to it), but I believe all applicants (high school seniors and college freshmen) have to submit an official high school transcript as part of the process.

That being said, you are in sort of a different category because you’re applying as a current college freshman and so your fall semester official college transcript is also due by January 20th (which you’ve already submitted): https://med.umkc.edu/bamd/timeline/. Without this official college transcript in hand, your application doesn’t get processed by UMKC Med. That is probably why your application status says “awaiting review.” They want to see your fall semester grades FIRST before extending an interview and that will likely be after January 20th.

Since you said you went in person to clear up the confusion, do you know the person you talked with? It might help to cordially email that person directly as well for followup. Hope that helps and I understand the anxiety. You can also PM me as well.

Hi Latha, my apologies. I have been out busy. I hope you are in good academic situation. If you still need to talk, please email me.

When do you èxpect UMKC will release interview invitation for BA MD for fall 2025

Welcome, @FatherOfSurgeons!

The website says by the end of January: https://med.umkc.edu/academics/degree-and-certificate-programs/ba-md/admissions-timeline.html

Received an interview In state, what about everyone else?

Do you know the dates of the interview and the structure of the interview? I’m assuming it’s still in MMI format and done virtually.

Test

If they interview 300?, what percent onstage interviewing typically get in? Regional percentage and out of state interviewing that get in?

You can find the answer to those questions here: https://med.umkc.edu/academics/degree-and-certificate-programs/ba-md/faqs.html.

They interview about 350 students in total. The final entering UMKC Year 1 BA/MD class is about 105-110 students.

hello is there a way i can send you a private dm?

I can PM you.

Yeah, I do know the dates and structure @Roentgen still the same MMI format with 9-11 stations. The dates are Tuesday Feb 18th, Wednesday Feb 19, Thursday Feb 20, Friday Feb 21, Tuesday Feb 25, Wednesday Feb 26, Thursday Feb 27, Friday Feb 28
