Unauthorized Change to SSA Direct Depost

I just got a letter from SSA saying “As you requested on or about March 12, 2020, we changed your direct deposit information.” I did not make any changes - logged onto mySSA and discovered a strange bank account was listed for direct deposit.

I have two step verification so have no idea how this could have happened; I’m supposed to get a code via text to log on, as happened correctly today. I immediately changed the bank back to ours, and then changed my password. It looks like the March 19 payment was not made to our account.

I will call the SSA fraud division on Monday, but is there anything else I can do over the weekend?

Maybe log into the associated bank account and change password for that, make sure that and other activity is all as it should be.

How unnerving. Good luck.

At the moment we’re hoping it could have been a clerical error if someone went to change their direct deposit at an office or over the phone. Perhaps the fraud division knows the manner in which the change was made.

Husband asked if I got an electronic notification of today’s change back to our bank, and I did indeed get one. This supports the live vs online bad change. Believe me, I would have noticed such an email a month or so again.

Aggravating because we have to move a little money in to cover a bill tomorrow.

That’s scary.

Has anyone else noticed a drop in telemarketing calls since the pandemic has been around? We’re getting very few calls that Robocall has to block.

All is well. I had to call the regular SSA number and got through after three hours on hold. Talked to a representative working from home. She said it was likely a human error with someone entering an incorrect SSN. The wrong bank rejected the check (probably because the name didn’t match the account). It will be reissued to me within 5 to 15 days, and the system will update tonight with the correct direct deposit info. So the April check will go to our account.

I got nervous at one point when she couldn’t hear me and she said she would call me back. It worked - whew!

Thank goodness, Marilyn!
