Is there any hope for deferred students. Can anyone give some insight?

@laxxxbro This might be outdated (it’s from 2009): “But to give you some idea of what’s happened in the past, last year we deferred 2,286 applicants and were able to eventually offer admission to 328. The year before, we deferred the decisions of 2,206 students and were able to admit 316.”

So chances are about 14%. That’s not that bad. Don’t lose hope yet. :)

Rejected
3.7 weighted GPA (4.0 without freshman year) 33 ACT 2150 SAT I was extremely disappointed about this. I felt that I had two really strong essays and I’m sure my Recs were great. I thought I would at least get deferred. My brother got waitlisted a few years ago with a 3.0 gpa and 2100 sat so I’m not really sure how this happened I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Out of State for Chapel Hill is the biggest crapshoot of them all. Honestly not sure I would have wanted to go being OOS anyway.

I am In State (@Tryan7294)

Hey guys! I received my acceptance via email on 1/20. Will I get an acceptance in the mail soon? I’m OOS, Indiana. I didn’t get scholarship day but does anyone know if the letter might possibly have other scholarship info??

@havequestions I’m from Alabama and I got my letter today so i’m sure you’ll get yours tomorrow or Monday. and i wasn’t invited to scholars day so my package had no special invite or anything.

@ScorpioChik awesome! Thanks!

Congrats to all who were accepted! Just to prove how unpredictable the admissions bored was, here are my stats!
OOS Student: Accepted
ACT- 31
SAT- N/A
Rank- my school doesn’t rank, but I am in the top 25%
GPA- 5.18… top 10% cut off was at 5.23…My school does a weighted GPA. Standard courses are on a 5 point scale, Dual Credit/ Pre-AP/IB courses are on a 5.5 point scale, and AP/IB are on a 6 point scale.
Courses- All IB my junior and senior year, with the exception of a PE class and an AP Economics course… I make mostly low A’s with some high B’s.
ECs- recreational soccer (impressive, I know), National Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions Club, Invisible Children (Junior year), Politics Club (Senior year). I also volunteer at a government funded dental clinic
Recs- Pretty good… I chose teachers that I had helped out in some way and owed me a favor. My counselor rec was kick ass… She said it was the best she had written all year!
Essays- Good, I thought. Especially my short answers. I made them slightly humorous because I figured that if I had been in their place and was bored of essays, I’d enjoy some comic relief.

Really though, nothing special. My later applications to other colleges were much, MUCH better.

do they not accept many oos asians?

@rmh8940,

You made my day, dude*! I’ve been sitting here in a pool of darkness in my living room, illuminated only by my laptop screen, silently cursing at the news of accepted applicants who’ve built churches in Africa and boast Ivy-Leaguer GPA’s and SAT’s. Waiting for a late-March decision ain’t easy.

But then, what do I see? A compatriot. A hermano, for our extra-lingual friends out there. The accepted salt of the earth applicant I’ve been looking for to calm my anxieties. Our stats match up: OOS, IB, similar GPA, similar EC’s, one especially good rec letter, and most importantly - humorous short answer responses!

So congratulations, and hopefully I’ll be as fortunate as you when March rolls around. I’m going to keep calm and carry on, and not log on to CC anymore for a good while for the benefit of my sanity. But well done, you magnificent ■■■■■■■, well done.

*Gender assignment in this post relies on the plausibly inaccurate assumption that you’re a fellow dude. If you’re not…my bad, dude.

I really wanted to go to UNC too! Its pretty devestating.

im va too! where in va? i’m nova

UNC Chapel Hill (OOS) vs. UMD College Park Honors (in state). Opinions anyone?

@streets ahead- I’m actually a chick! But no worries! It shouldn’t make that much of a difference! I just got accepted into honors as well!

Good luck to you in march(:
-Rachel

MAARA2012- Both are great schools. I graduated from UM- CP and loved every minute there. I now live in NC and love UNC just as much as UM (except when they play head to head basketball or lacrosse
I think UNC is ranked higher over all than UM but I really don’t think the difference is worth the added expense to pay OOS. Two things to consider are to see how the school ranks in what you want to study and where would you like to live after graduation. Networking for a job is much easier in the state that you graduate from! Good luck with your decision. I think you will be happy with either school!
