Waitlisted here. While the letter says no additional recommendation letters, is it bad to send a letter of continued interest? Anyone know of success stories from the waitlist?
My son got accepted as well as Kenan-Flagler Assured enrollment program for business. He had 3.9 UW and 4.5 W. He competes in skateboarding across the southeast and teaches kids how to skateboard. He also started his own e-commerce business. He is also graduating HS with an AA from community college.

Just posting for future applicants stats that earned special opportunities. We were a bit shocked by all that was offered, but shows they do look at applications holistically as well!
Out of curiosity, how much money was the academic scholarship?
10k a year and renewable every year, I assume pending gpa. This was a huge shock! She was ecstatic though. She had her heart set on Duke and they straight up denied her!
Their loss!
Does anyone know if we get to see the inside of buildings/classrooms/recreational gym on admitted students day? Hoping we have access and not just a walk-by. Curious if anyone here has ever been and can clarify? If you have students at UNC, are they happy with the facilities? Iāve heard there is a bit of compromise with historic campus and comfort - lol. First kid going to school so all of this is a little nerve racking as we get down to the nitty gritty of picking a school.
Great question! We saw some of the buildings during the Morehead Cain event, and mine says they saw a dorm on the tour, but I think they are just remembering them from a camp they attended a few years ago. Also wondering about rec gym as NC Stateās is so impressive! Not a make it or break it by any meansā¦
The gym is definitely not as nice as NCSU. We did our tours on the same weekend and DS was definitely more impressed with the facilities at State. That said, once he did more research about programs and atmosphere, he seems to be leaning towards UNC. Iām trying to get him to create a sign in and figure out if we can get on admitted student tour but he seems in no hurry to make his decision. If there any invite only events that seem helpful to making this decision, please post details. I get more info from fellow parents than I do from him. We are in state but none of his friends got in so flying solo. Thanks!
Sounds similar to the original tour we did. We shall see.
You should be able to get into one or both rec centers. As someone said they are nowhere near as nice as NCSU or Charlotte. Last year during one of the event days we just walked in and asked if we could look around. My son is a freshman and is fine with the gyms but there is nothing impressive to them when compared to others.
UNC has a sample dorm room they take you to on tours and does give a good idea of how they are. Dorms are mixed. My son was in Cobb (north campus) last summer and now Craige. Cobb is nicer and traditional. Craige, like others on south campus, are old but a blast. My son and his suitemates and friends donāt really seem to care that their rooms arenāt āniceā. I doubt you can actually go into a dorm room unless you know someone.
Most buildings should be open to explore some.
Overall, my son loves the campusā¦the oldness of it all doesnāt seem to bother him at all and the proximity to Franklin Street is a plus.
All great points to consider. Thank you for taking the time to respond!!
Thanks for the detailed info. Appreciate it!
Thanks for the firsthand info. I think youāre right about the dorms not being high on some boysā priority lists. Bases on the state of his current room, nice dorms is not a priority but the atmosphere and friends vibe is. Did your son have any trouble getting sophomore housing with buddies. How soon do you pick? I worry about having to find roommates before friendships are fully formed.
My son wanted to be on South campus because some people he got to know wanted that also. He is happy he did because so many freshman are down there and itās much more social than north campus (thatās whatās said but I donāt know for sure). I wanted him on north campus because itās closer to everything but Iām looking at it from a 50 year old. He is loving it. South Campus has the majority of freshman so it seems more fun.
Sophomore housing is annoying as you have to pick in November of your freshman year. Even my son mentioned that he didnāt know who he wanted to live with yet as itās only 2 months in. He was lucky bc the group he decided to live with had a student who had loads of credits and was put to the front of the line.
Finding friends part - my son spent his high school career in his room on the computer. This worried us with him going to college but he did the exact opposite - joined clubs, goes to as many sporting events as possible (even though he never cared for them before), attends many extra STEM sessions with other that his sophomore living group is made up of people that arenāt in his current suite. They have actually grown very close.
Let me know if you have anymore questions
Anyone know what dorm an incoming freshman female would prefer? I canāt remember, but they said they only have to stay on campus the first year correct? Iām all new to a kid going to college and sheās our only one so Iāll probably have lots of questions!
Itās really difficult to figure out where your child would like to live. I do think there is an all female dorm if that matters.
South campus is supposedly louder but my son has never complained about it. My sonās dorm (Craige) is full of suites. He has 4 dorm rooms / 8 people with their own bathroom that is separate from the rooms. This is key because it is cleaned every week by the school. Some dorms the bathroom is in between 2 rooms. If a worker has to go into a dorm room to get to the bathroom, they wonāt clean that - cleaning is up to the student.
Oh no! Iām sure she would like coed dorms better honestly! Wasnāt sure if there was any preference but sounds like south campus could be a little more fun! Def the school cleaning would be a plus as well, so will check into dorms like you mentioned!
Most of the girls we know from our town choose Granville Towers for their first year.
Is Granville a common choice for students super interested in Greek Life? Iāve gotten that impression but not sure if itās accurate.
