UNC Chapel Hill Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

FWIW, in NC, GPA is 4.0 with 0.5 for honors and 5.0 for AP, so unlike SC (with a 6.0 for APs), the NC GPAs are pretty standard and comparable to other states.

Again, that doesn’t mean that’s what they are using to calculate avg GPA on the CDSs
lots of students from private NC schools as well as 18% OOS students in the enrolled group.

Yes. I don’t have a side either way in terms of a students desire to voice their opinions. It is a school that mimics the top Northeastern schools in terms of professors and students seeking it out for its open dialogue. Imo ( and I’ve spent half my life in the Boston area while graduating from UNC, it’s an amazing balance but mirrors Harvard and other schools which allow a greater degree of free speech. They’ll be some that cross a line into disruptive/ dangerous behavior but honestly it’s often due to Board of Governors not listening to the schools needs

For what it’s worth, on the NC MyInsights Additional Notes tab they state that they do exclude “nonstandard” GPAs (any GPA on a scale other than 4.0) from their GPA calculations.

I have not looked at the CDS calc to see if the numbers line up and will leave that exercise to someone else.

Thank you for that reality check!

Couldn’t agree more. My student is at an Ivy and fwiw, campus life is stressful, club culture is way too competitive, students are cut throat in class and vying for internships and jobs, and professors seem to negatively curve grades more often than not. Great education? Sure. Overall college experience? Negative.

I agree with other posters about being hard to compare the GPA at UNC to GPA at UGA since UGA has it’s own system to calculate it (which I think only gives added weight to AP and not to Honors classes). And the SAT score is artifically inflated at UNC and other test optional schools and will look much lower at schools like UGA where it’s required.

And as far as the Honors College is concerned- its stats are VERY impressive, like IVY league level, and likely surpass the avaerage stats at UNC. My kid is in the Honors college at UGA (2nd year) and hasn’t fully taken advantage of its opportunities (by choice and busy with other things). but it offers a lot to the kid who wants it. she is very happy and chose UGA over more prestigious schools (finances were only part of that decision).

Yes, the average ACT for the 2024 UGA Morehead College enrolled class was 34. Extra weight is only given to core AP classes and tests are required.

My D is is OOS at UNC. She really wanted to go to a specific Ivy. She was deferred and waitlisted and dragged along until May. She ended up at UNC, and couldn’t be happier. It’s a big school and there are opportunities for everyone to find what they are looking for. She ended up in the right place.

With regard to politics, you can find whatever you’re looking for. Overall, I think administration has been very good, especially compared to the cowardly leadership at many of our top schools.

We love UNC.

I love when things work out the way they are supposed to.

Totally!

You want the southern experience? You can find it, especially in the frats and sororities.

You want the nerdy experience? It’s there.

Chapel Hill itself is very liberal, but the students come from all over NC, and NC is very blue in some places and very red in others. The students are a bit of everything.

Beautiful campus, excellent reputation, lots of really interesting courses that fit the general requirements, and a great area of NC.

If UNC > UGA (by a country mile?) then by that same logic UVA is surely > UNC, right? (This is when the Tar Heels back track on their rationale for judging which colleges are “better”).

Great school. And with 30% of the class out of state, it’s a good safety when UNC is your top choice but only allows 12%.

Interesting. I thought UVA was higher ranked?

These are simply percentage of OOS students based upon the unis mandates. It’s a great school, I attempted to find some humor in my reply since it’s difficult to say which school is “ better”. Would come down to fit, major, fin aid- many factors. Also good luck to your student, it’s as indicated very difficult for OOS simply due to these limited # of spots.

On those particular measures, UVA edges out UNC, for sure. (Much closer margin than UNC>UGA on those measures.) And, again, these are all shades of gray - UNC, UVA and UGA
all should be proud to attend and can grow and prosper with good educations, friendships and all the rest.

My D25 applied to both as OOS. We’ll see how things turn out

Nothing wrong with humor, I am just trying to get the perspective of someone from the Mid-Atlantic, since we are not in the area.

My D25 applied to both too. Elder sis D21 is now a 4th year at UVA. I like both. Can’t wait for the EA decisions from both. Praying.

I can say coming from the Boston area as a teen, UNC was so traditional as well as open minded with a courteous aspect I attribute to being in the south, it was and is a unique balance. Having visited UVA it’d been just as positive I believe. Have a child awaiting EA for UNC we’re excited( and in state thus more hopeful than some only bc of the difference in acceptance rates.) I’ll also say if OOS one may want to throw their hat in the ring for Duke, another one that’s well funded and organized.
