This is true. Only admitted students.

I am pretty sure only currently enrolled students can look at their app file.

Yes, we saw many with 60 credits struggle at registration to get classes, and those in STEM were told to only register for 1 STEM class first semester and 2 second semester, so coming in with a lot of credits (45-60) isn’t always better than coming in with 30 credits.

Yep, I provided the appointment link above…appointments are for 10 mins via zoom and looks like everything is booked thru April 2025.

Yes, I was confirming what you said as the person asking if it was only for enrolled students originally addressed me.

TY. I should have stated enrolled vs admitted.

It’s common at UNC for sure as a freshman. It’s my understanding honors program students have a better chance since their registration is earlier but I’d like someone to verify that if possible.

Current stats which I failed to post earlier:
In State
4.0 UW/4.75 W(out of 5)
Rank 1/200
Rural
15 DE, 5 AP
4 Varsity sports
Leadership and some programs affiliated with UNC for ECs.
Test Optional
Indicated interest in Honors program on app.
Legacy( no idea how it’s considered)

Congrats on a stellar resume! Hard for me to imagine that’s not an accepted application. Good luck, but I feel really good about your position right now.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge how they view sports as ECs? I know they want well-rounded applicants and my daughter has some other things (mission work, NHS, honor council, etc). But her main EC are varsity sports. Will graduate with 9 varsity letters among 3 sports. Two time all-state swimming. Competed in 7 state championships over high school career. That’s in addition to year-round club soccer. It’s a huge part of her life and mega time-consuming. As I look at these incredible resumes in the posts above, I wonder if she’s too one dimensional. Looking back, wondering if she should have taken a season or two off to do something else. My hope is the AOs can see her level of commitment.

Mine had mostly sports as her activities (club, varsity - captain, and summer swim). Her jobs were also related (lifeguard and swim coach), as was much of her volunteer work. We wonder if the cohesiveness of her story was appealing to them. She didn’t have other school clubs other than 2 honors societies. Her friend who was well-rounded was actually waitlisted (also she was test optional).

I can’t imagine this wouldn’t be an acceptance. Test optional is the only downfall on it, but I doubt that will matter.

So, it helps a bit, but first semester, freshman register after everyone, and honors kids actually registered after the first group of orientation students. They save seats in freshman classes, but if you don’t need those, that won’t help. Afterwards, honors students register on the day appropriate for their credit level, but 2 hours earlier. AP credits don’t affect registration, but I think DE credits do.

The real gem is students with accommodations or who are athletes. They register day 1 in the first slot. So, if your student has any needs (ADHD, food allergies, mobility issues, etc.) they should sign up with ARS.

So nice. TY. It’s always uncertain however the in state status is so key for UNC.

TY. The student had a compelling argument regarding TO- never took a test and explained why. As a parent it was a bit unsettling to know a high score was attainable and the chances UNC and others could revert back to test mandate required a discussion on the possibilities of limited schools. Very different personalities vs their sibling at Duke but almost identical stats aside from test.

Helpful. Sounds similar. My kid has 4 years varsity swimming, 4 years as swim coach in summer, and 4 years of ā€œSwim Across Americaā€ as her fundraiser. I guess we went for cohesiveness too LOL. It wasn’t on purpose but I hope they see it that way. I’ve just been impressed by the range of interesting ECs listed by candidates on the thread. It’s truly an impressive group. There’s zero chance I would get in today with my HS resume.

Those sports ECs are impressive and certainly what I’d call a ā€œ spikeā€ in regards to a particular passion. ECs and essays are subjective in terms of what the AOs are perceiving. It’s one of the nuances of the process. If there happens to be a reader that was a swimmer, a sports enthusiast etc it can help. Generally the higher the tiered school, the greater chance there are some outrageous performances/ skills of students and state and national achievements begin to be scored higher.

Can anyone predict when we will be receiving decisions this year? This question is due to last year the decisions being released a week earlier than stated by the website, so we are just wondering if the university will follow that trend yet again or release the last friday of the month.

Good question. With the extra January Friday everyone is questioning. Looks like Michigan will be this Friday even though many assumed it would be 1/31.

Carolina and NC State have historically released the last Friday of January, at 4 pm and 5 pm respectively. But, this year, NC State has Jan 30 listed as the date, so many are theorizing that one of two things will happen:

  1. Both will release this Friday, January 24th, at 4 pm and 5 pm.
  2. Both will release on the 30th.
It is possible that one will release the 30th and the other the 31st, but that isn’t what usually happens. My bets are on Friday.

This is good to prep for since your kids may still be at school when UNC releases (our school went until 4:15 pm), and you may want to advise your kids not to open it at school. The drama that ensued at my kid’s school the past two years was insane.
