UNC Chapel Hill Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

We know kids who were offered this that did not have alumni ties. But all were from very competitive districts or schools. (One was one of the CH valedictorians!)

my daughter was just accepted OOS to Global Launch in Costa Rica. It’s good to hear positive things from a parent of a student who did the CR program!

is your daughter a legacy? My sense is that this makes a big difference. I am a UNC-CH alum and all of the people my daughter knows who were accepted to UNC-CH from her school so far, including herself, are legacies.

Good info.
Do you know of any OOS (legacy or not) who received the Sophomore Guaranteed Start?

This… Read the whole letter. D24 was EA-WL. She initially didn’t read past the first few sentences about being waitlisted…but there was a second paragraph about the guaranteed sophomore acceptance. She has a friend that opted to go to the local community college this year, and he plans to transfer in Fall 2025. None of us had an legacy ties…so it wasn’t related to that, but these were in state, high performing kids, with high test scores (my kid had a 33 ACT, 4.4 GPA, I think 5 APs with 5’s, 2 sport varsity athlete, 2 yr capt) who maxed out their GPA (our HS granted an extra .25 point for DE classes over AP…Carolina last year literally seemed to just take the highest GPA at our rural high school…so that kids that took DE over AP).

My D was initially crushed. She opted to remain on the WL last year, but quickly pivoted. I’ll be honest, Carolina did her a solid by WL her…it just wasn’t the right path for her, and talking to other students and parents confirmed that. She’s thriving elsewhere and has chosen a major not offered at UNC (and even already has an lucrative paid internship lined up for the summer through recruiting events at her school). Her AP teachers at her high school generally bemoan UNC, saying they’re always shocked who they accept and who they don’t. Don’t take it personally.

In hindsight, while being WL was a punch in the gut, looking back, a year removed, it literally was just a bump in the road. I jokingly asked if she wanted to transfer over Christmas, but she’s at the absolute right college for her. For those denied or WL, have faith. It works out.

Did you apply early action or regular decision? It is only early action decisions that are out. Regular decision will be out in March.

We’re in state, so I only know of in state people. I can say, it seems like in competitive schools and districts within the state (Wake, Mecklenburg, Union, Orange, Durham), top students who get waitlisted are often offered this when they are test optional, essays or recs maybe don’t quite measure up, have high gpa but aren’t in top 10%, but are stronger candidates than many offered a spot from other counties. They are pretty sure these kids will be successful at Carolina, based on previous kids from the district, but they just don’t have the room for them because they take from all over the state.

My D still hasn’t opened her portal to read her admissions decision. The suspense is killing me. We are OOS, so I told her from the beginning to expect a denial, so I think she is just avoiding what feels like a likely disappointment.

Nope, not at all. No connection to UNC whatsoever. We are quite surprised she was accepted, TBH. She does have a lot of community college courses and ECs though.

Accepted Global Launch to Scotland. OOS, 4.0/4.0 UW GPA, 35 ACT, all classes honors or AP (all scores 5) and college courses, NHS, varsity tennis, STEM club pres, etc. I’m wondering, are most Global Launch kids OOS?

What were your daughter’s results? Hoping she was accepted!

Thank you - unfortunately she did not get in. We knew OOS was such a longshot, but it was still a huge disappointment. She has other great options and still waiting for several more decisions!

Was curious to see if anyone else was waitlisted with similar stats and whether there is any ranking to the waitlist. DS is in-state applicant with a 1490 SAT, 35 superscore ACT, top 10% of class, Eagle Scout, all 5’s on his AP classes except for one 4; very active and involved in competitive sports as well as arts, an active volunteer and a legacy. But he was waitlisted at UNC, which was his top choice. I frankly don’t think he has a chance at getting in off the waitlist and it’s also way past when he’d need to accept elsewhere. I know this sounds obnoxious but we were a little surprised to see he didn’t get in as an in-state applicant and know a lot of folks who got in with lesser scores, etc. Are folks seeing similar results this year? He’s so heartbroken.

Quite surprised to see in state applicant with 35 ACT ( you should not send SAT score ) and top 10 percent in class not getting admission…

DC OOS rejected, 4.4 GPA, ACT 35 taken once at 15yo, all national level honors and activities, sibling attending UNC.

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I have no knowledge of how the waitlist moves, but my daughter had several friends with similar stats not get in. We are also in state.

What county? If it’s a competitive one, it may just be they took way more that were ranked above him or had better recs and activities. Mine just viewed her admissions file and there were quotes from the letter of rec in there, and they said they really look at that.

Also, this is unlikely, but my daughter’s friend was taken from the waitlist on RD day. I have only heard of a few cases of this but you never know. It is quite surprising they didn’t get in.

OOS that isn’t surprising. It’s an 8% admit rate, and most kids are that accomplished. In state it’s very surprising as the admit rate is around 40%, but for kids with high test scores and high stats, it’s much higher.

Sorry to hear this. These stats do seem high for in-state waitlist. I don’t see GPA but at top 10% I’m assuming it’s high. I can see why you’re disappointed/surprised. We’re in a hyper-competitive area of NC and there were a LOT of waitlisters we know that we assumed would be admits. I have a suspicion UNC is trying to diversify to more rural NC high schools more than ever.

These are indeed great stats for an in-state applicant. I would not give up hope on being accepted from the waitlist. I would write a strong letter of continued interest and send to the admission office (or through the portal if that is possible). Also, if you are near Chapel Hill, you might actually get an appointment and directly talk to an admissions representative in-person. Best of luck!
