UNC Chapel Hill Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

This is very true. Also, unless they are set on a major already or have taken a variety of courses at the Comm. College to decide their major, they might put themselves in kind of a limbo where they cannot apply to a School at UNC because of their standing but don’t have much to take because they have filled up their Tarheel Tracker with AP and DE course equivalency’s. You also still have to apply to many schools at UNC( where I think many get stressed) It does, though, give them a good opportunity to develop a Minor or Two minors and many then graduate in 4 years with 140 + credit hours.

For future applicants - In state son waitlisted. Rural HS. 4.375 WGPA (when applied. He’s a 4.411 now) Test optional. Top 10% - Maybe 30/300. Year round swim, school swim (captain senior year). Took all AP sciences available (Physics 1&2, AP Chem, AP Bio, APES) along with various other AP. A few B’s in 9th grade. Volunteered outside of NHS required hours. Fed baby birds at a rescue. Tied volunteer hours (at a food bank) to intended major by discussing food insecurity and working to solve this issue. My best advice is tie volunteer service to intended major. If it’s political science, then volunteer at a voter drive, etc. He was accepted at NC State which was his top choice. Sister is a sophomore at Chapel Hill and had better stats and did not go TO as son did. Happy to provide more info to help.

It’s an issue for many unfortunately. The other aspect as you’ve touched on is many majors with higher return on investment, in demand are through applications. Business for instance. It’s a great semi Target school but also not a certain path even with excellent stats- thus many opt to go to another direct admit school. I see UNC as truly a liberal arts focused education and at times results in requiring further schooling for students. Regardless it’s a beautiful location and challenging, and students feel honored to have attended.

My son was accepted. I’m thrilled for him as this has been his dream for a long time. We will now be a house divided. His oldest brother graduated from NCSU, and his middle brother is currently at NCSU. Best wishes to all, wherever you land.

Interesting. My oldest son was deferred then waitlisted when he applied for Fall 2018. I didn’t realize it had changed.

My son was accepted in state. A good friend of his did first semester in Ireland last year and loved it! Congrats to your daughter! She’ll have a wonderful experience.

My daughter OOS was just waitlisted. Is it easier to get in if you apply into the Global Launch program?

Also, does UNC allow letters of continued interest? I know some schools are adamant about not accepting them. So will it help or hurt my kid to send one in?

They say it doesn’t affect chances at all, but I think it is easier to get in if that is chosen as htey are banking on the students who don’t return after semester 1 and replace them on campus with Global Launch kids.

Your child needs to check their portal and see. Since it is a waitlist and not a deferral, I am guessing not.

My son did GL last year, he thinks a good number of students that went came off the waitlist. But I have no numbers to substantiate that claim.

No, it did not have a name like that but covers everything for 4 years, according to the letter.

Congrats! So exciting!

Congrats. Can you please let others know what your son did and scores etc so we can learn for other kids going forward?

FYI - for those who are not either accepted or rejected ED and are on the Waitlist…

When your child’s decision on the waitlist does come out - if they receive a decline, make certain they read the -entire- decision letter. If they tell you they were declined, ask if you can read it.

A small number of these kids may be offered what is called a “Sophomore Guaranteed Start”. Your child will receive a link to check off their interest in the offer, which provides details but essentially they are guaranteed admissions as a transfer to start first semester the following year based on conditional performance (1) 30 Credit Hours from an accredited school - the courses do need to be accepted by UNC, (2) a clean school record (no disciplinary actions) and (3) a pretty low GPA threshold, which if your child was a legitimate candidate for Carolina, should be relatively easy for them to clear in first year college. They are also given contact info for an admissions officer to stay in touch and walk them thru the process.

There is no application process for it - it is simply offered or it is not. It will (or historically has been) in the same letter they are advised of their decline for current fall admission.

I believe this offer may only be made to applicants with Carolina Alumni ties - though I am not certain of it. Every parent or student (10+ now) I’ve heard from who received this offer has had some type of legacy tie, including graduate/professional school alum. I have not heard of OOS offers, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t made.

I would consider it a long shot - but from experience make sure they (and you) read the entire decline letter.

Last year, my son was ED-Waitlist. When his school friends received their waitlist-declined letters, he also came walking down the stairs dejected he had been declined. He only read the first paragraph of his letter and stopped because it said basically we don’t have room. When I went thru it with him - the upside came in the second paragraph. Had I not known of this slim possibility and just accepted his view of what the letter said, he may never had followed up himself!

He’s currently at Purdue, crushing it, and completing the check boxes on the UNC transfer offer to quite likely start there Fall 2025.

Good luck to those still waiting.
