UNC Chapel Hill Early Action for Fall 2025 Admissions

I’d say slim, but not impossible. TO with no outstanding activities (all applicants will have at least what yours has) is a long shot, especially with a 3.7 gpa and “only” 6 AP courses. OOS admission rates are around 8%. Brother being an undergrad may help. We know IN STATE test optional kids with higher stats who didn’t get in that had 4 years of mulitple varsity sports, leadership and volunteer.

Thanks. We will find out soon enough.

FWIW UNC has published research showing that academic success was no different after 5+ AP courses. So “only 6” is more than fine.

My son has similar stats. He’s realistic that it’s a lottery ticket - he might get in, but it’s not necessarily going to happen. Thankfully he likes his safeties and we’ll see what happens. Good luck to her she’s worked hard and deserves good things!

FWIW also my other son got into UT-Austin very similar stats and was TO (UT is now not TO) so it can happen!

I just dropped my calculus class. I was really failing the class and I have to take on Anatomy and Physiology at the same time. My school said that it counts as a WF, my question now becomes, will I get a chance to explain my circumstances if I do get in and that shows up on my transcript? I have a lot to deal with this year and Calculus was really taking a blow at the amount of responsibilities I had at home. I was barely finding time to do homework and study, and with my teacher’s style, I couldn’t keep up with it all this year. So does that put me in a rescinding position? I have never failed a class, and considering I had a C last year in precalc, I thought I could bounce back. It is a year-round credit, so I will not get credit, but it was not transferrable anywhere other than Christian schools.

Are you a high school student or a transfer? Honestly, a C in pre-calc is likely to keep you out of Carolina, so it may not matter. Also, you should update them now that you dropped the course since you did so before decisions were made. What’s your GPA? Test scores?

I agree with the above that you have to update all the schools you applied to, and any you have been accepted to. Update them in the way each school wants updates…thru the portal or email to the AO, etc.

For schools you haven’t yet applied to, use the Addt’l info section to explain the W… Make it short, don’t blame the teacher.

At some schools this W may be an issue (the more selective the school is the greater the probability.)

Does anyone know if EA decisions will come out 1/31 or could it be a few days before? I’m asking bc midterm grades will get sent about 1/29 and my daughter might have a low B in a class for Q2 and she’s not thrilled about it.

Our high school sends out mid year grades on Jan 15. Not thrilled to have those 1st sem senior grades sent either. Good luck.

Trying to prepare myself for late January decisions knowing that it’s an incredible long shot for my out of state son (but you can always dream, right?). Do they do acceptances, denials and deferrals out of early action?

It happens my older son, who is now a Jr. @ UT, got in right toward the end of Jan in '22. Sending good thoughts!

My understanding is that UNC doesn’t defer EA applicants to the RD pool, but instead it’s either admit / deny / waitlist / Carolina Global Launch (if you indicated an interest in that program). Here’s the website.

Decisions won’t change over 2 days. I don’t think UNC asks for midterm grades. You would have to send them in yourself. And a B won’t keep her out of UNC.

Why are they sent? UNC doesn’t ask for them, or at least they didn’t last year.

Interestingly, they did draw from their waitlist on RD decisions last year for a very few people. Daughter’s friend (waitlisted in EA) got a very surprising acceptance the day RD came out.

Our high school says they do this automatically. If a student’s EA decision isn’t out or they are deferred by Jan 15, they will send the mid year grades automatically. :expressionless:

Roughly how much is housing off campus? UTK is 18k to budget safely… based on experience. Penn State would 13k I was told.

I highly doubt anyone will be looking at them that close to the release of decisions, but it’s not impossible.

Mine will be in an apartment that is on the expensive end next year. It’s $1400/month. That said, if the child is willing to live further away and bus or bike to campus or share a room, it is possible to get them for $800-900/month.

Thank you. Her school sends them automatically. That’s helpful!

Can confirm what MAXCX1009 says. Budget $18000(12 month lease) for a private bedroom in a nice apartment close to campus. If they’re willing to share, some nice complexes offer 2 students in a room($10,000) but harder to find and there are cheaper options the further you get away from campus but like everywhere, parking is an issue. Low-end budget $10,000. Side note, sororities are quite expensive as they have houses with meal plans so factor that in as well if your child plans on rushing. $4000-$6000/yr. My D will live in her sorority house sophomore year at quite a budget savings, $5000/yr but they stuff 3 girls in a tiny room, lol - she had an application in on an $18,000 apartment. I look at it as offsetting the cost of the sorority over several years. She also makes an effort to eat there so we were able to get a bare minimum on-campus meal plan. Sounds like you have experience with all the “extras” that come with a kid in college. This is our first year with a kid in college and there are so many expenses beyond sticker price that many families aren’t aware of until they’re knee-deep in the experience. Good luck to your kiddo!
