@zoehelms congrats!! & I think the group me filled (I haven’t joined yet) because the link says no longer available, but I found it in the bio on instagram from @ uncclassof24 .
My daughter received the invitation to Global Launch as well, and she is planning to apply. I would be interested to learn how many people were invited to apply. Also, I think the opportunity sounds fantastic, but I do worry about the transition in January, especially for an oos student.
My OOS daughter received it, but she decided to withdraw her application. It sounds like only 50 students will be accepted, and by January so many freshman will have already formed their friend groups that it really concerned her. I’m thinking it’s a way for UNC to circumvent the state mandated cap on OOS students, as these kids will “transfer” in during spring semester. SO many top tier OOS applicants were denied or waitlisted! Maybe if Global Launch works this year they will expand it in the future to try to keep those high stat kids that they are not allowed to accept??? Just a theory.
My daughter received this offer, but was really looking forward to joining color guard during the fall semester and forming a solid friend group. She said, “They’re trying to back door me into the university…through Ireland!” For her, this would have negative social consequences, but I’m really glad to hear that there are brave, confident, outgoing students who would relish an opportunity like this! I wish she was more of a risk-taker! Good for your kids; you should be proud!
@Redi2cruise2024 they are taking 25 spots for each, so yes, 50 total. Slim chance, but he wanted to apply and try anyway. Writing 4 more essays certainly wasn’t in his game plan. LOL I did study abroad in college and loved it, though it wasn’t my first semester, definitely takes a certain personality to go off immediately, but they are bonding with 24 other people who are in the same boat so hopefully that helps in the transition, all in all I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for the right person.
Edited to add, we are from NC so he knows quite a few people who will be attending UNC so I think that helps as far as going in January, I think it might be harder for him if we were out of state. However, he is also considering some out of state schools, so we’ll see what happens, but he has always wanted to go to Scotland.
@Broadway24601 Thanks for that student perspective. I don’t even have a horse in this study abroad race and just thought it sounded great, but from a parents view. Your comments (or rather your daughter) definitely gives insights on what the students would feel about this non traditional path.
Sometimes I am just in awe of all of the things that are available to today’s youth that we didn’t have and can’t imagine why they couldn’t see things as we see them, where in fact, we are viewing them in hindsight and years of experience.
I have worked very hard not to influence my wishes of where my son attends based on what my wishes are as this is his time, not mine. He has to be happy with where his school home and the experiences that he is looking for. Thank you for that feedback and I truly believe your daughter will find the perfect fit that is for her.
Hi there! I received my admission decision on Friday on my applicant portal, and I was accepted as an OOS student. I saved my letter to my computer, so I do have a copy of that. I created my ONYEN as instructed. However, now when I try to log into my admission/applicant portal, it says that there is no account registered with my email/birthdate. I can access my ONYEN still and that student account, but not my applicant portal. Is anyone else having this problem?

Essays- Common app was strong. Yet, because UNC was the EA due by Oct. 15th, it was rather rough compared to the others. But, it was unique with me picking common app prompt 6, and writing a hobby of mine! Got counselor and grad’s to read it. Supps were alright. Not the best, perhaps cliche and/or rushed.
LoR- A strength in my application. I feel they were a large contributing factor.
First was from my AP Statistics teacher which I did well in the class junior year, while being the two time Mu Alpha Theta (Honor Society) president. Worked very hard and actively in and out of the classroom. She approached me and said she wanted to write a special one from me. Great classroom relationship, I visit her during her planning periods, lunch, to talk and chitchat. BEST TEACHER EVER!
Second was from my two year AP Comparative (10th) and AP US (11th) Government teacher. She made me want to major in Political Science. I did well in the class and she definitely focussed more on the academic side of mine-- my interest in international politics and tying it in with history.
Legacy Status- NONE.

Native in English and fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, and Korean.
Conversant in Spanish (Four Years)
Violinist (Seven Years)
A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE WHO GOT IN! WAY TO GO! #GDTBATH!
My husband and I are Carolina grads, both were OOS. For those wary of the Global Launch program because of missing out on forming friendships in the fall…FWIW, though I met a number of folks my freshman year and joined a sorority right away, I met all of my lifelong college friends my sophomore year. I added another group my junior year when I made a varsity team. Two of my husband’s best college friends had each transferred to UNC as sophomores. The study abroad program only has so many spots, seems new, and would make for a less traditional transition. However, if someone’s heart is set on Carolina, don’t let the midyear transition be the main worry. Seems it is a pretty pricey option compared to in-state tuition, but more on par with OOS. Good luck to all!
@Redi2cruise2024 it does sound like a great program. I have a friend with a daughter at Northeastern who did a similar program in London her first semester. She experienced a lot of personal growth and when she came back to start at Northeastern in the Spring semester she had a tight knit group of friends that she made through her London experience.
Anyone know timeframe of scholarship notification? Carolina scholars etc?
S, OOS very excited to have been admitted. He found out in December he was admitted to Harvard and was through the roof. I was amazed to see how much Carolina excited him. He said last Eve that if he was selected as a Carolina scholars or equivalent he would definitely turn down his Harvard invite. Says a lot about Carolina I think.

Congrats to all! No matter your decision, everyone has a bright future ahead of them. Remember, a rejection from a school is just the closing of a door you were never meant to go through.
Did anyone receive an email that notified you of decisions coming out? The only emails I have received are concerning their receiving of my FAFSA and them asking me to report any outside scholarships I may have. I didn’t receive an email about the release of decisions nor did I receive an email mentioning the need to create an ONYEN and only came to know about these things due to other people informing me. I am asking because I want to be sure that I am not missing any vital emails. Thanks in advance!

Not surprised. It is very hard to get in OOS. Maybe he’ll apply as transfer. My sister did.
Hey, for other International students what does it say on your connectcarolina under NC Residency Status? I just want to make sure something isn’t wrong with mine.
