The University spokesperson wrote that the widespread use of AI-assisted writing tools was the factor diminishing the usefulness of AI essay ratings. Scores increasingly skewed higher, and thus the rating became less useful as an evaluative tool.
"The decision was made to remove the AI-assisted rating of grammar and writing from the essay evaluation because it was no longer providing a meaningful distinction in the decision-making process.”
I wonder if everyone had a 9 or 10?
I suspect slate (who made the tool) will be rushing to improve it. They probably slapped together a quick prompt 2 years ago…
Yeah, I’m guessing it ended up being kind of circular in that the AI was looking for particular factors which were the same factors that the AI writing tools were using?
Yeah, that is a great guess…
or maybe Slate just can’t have a one-size-fits all tool for all colleges - I would posit the essays at UNC are, on average, top tier. If the tool is calibrated for a school with an lower-average applicant profile it isn’t going to be very helpful. It is going to say the great kids are great, which they already know. They need help distinguishing between the fantastic kids, which this won’t.
